Recycling Of Electronics For Businesses

Selecting an Electronics Recycler

There are numerous electronics recycling companies that offer a wide range of recycling services and different levels of expertise to different types of businesses, organizations or individuals. How do you pick one that meets your needs? Even though the Florida Department of Environmental Protection has no specific requirement for electronics recyclers, we recommend that you choose a recycler that has a third-party certification. If you opt to select an electronics recycler without that certification, we strongly recommend that the following four issues be taken into consideration:

  • Does the recycling facility have a DEP/EPA identification number?
  • What kind of insurance does the recycling facility have?
  • Where exactly does your electronic scrap end up?
  • How does the recycler ensure that the data on your electronic scrap is destroyed?
  • Shape And Design Of Rabbit Ears

I sold my first Plasma TV

Omnidirectional rabbit ears are the oldest and most common type of indoor antenna, which are designed to receive VHF signals when youre within 15 miles of the nearest tower.

Theyre easy to install and consist of two telescoping metal rods connected to a common base, making rabbit ears a type of dipole antenna.

This design is bidirectional, meaning that it has two main lobes in the opposite direction. In the case of rabbit ears, each rod is a separate lobe.

Where To Recycle Old TVs: Your Guide To TV Recycling

If youve got a big, chunky CRT TV taking up valuable space in your basement, its a no-brainer that youd want to get rid of it. Even if youve got a newer TV you no longer use, if its just gathering dust, its not doing you any good. The obvious solution: Look up e-waste center near me and find out where to recycle old TVs.

You might be tempted to just toss it to the curb, but hold your horses. In some places, thats illegal, and its inadvisable everywhere. Recycling should always be your first choice for disposing of unwanted electronics. Its way more environmentally friendly. If youre thinking, Wait, there isnt an e-waste center near me, theres no way I can participate, youre probably wrong about that. Many big retailers have programs where they accept old electronics, either to refurbish or to recycle.

There are plenty of options for smaller electronics, but it might seem daunting to find where to recycle old TVs. Dont let that stop you. Answers are one search away. Before you get started and search e-waste center near me, here are a few things to keep in mind.

    Get Your Device Fixed

One thing you might want to consider if your device is broken and you dont really want to get a new device or sell it is to get your device fixed. Some companies will have retail locations that you can go to and get your device fixed have a screen replaced, get a new battery installed, etc.

Other companies like Puls will come to you and fix your device at your location. They can fix issues ranging from a faulty headphone plug, broken power button, to giving you a new Bluetooth radio or screen.

Even if you decide you do want to sell your device, youll likely get more money for the device if its fixed first. Usually, the cost you pay to get it fixed before you sell will be outweighed by its increase in value. Something to consider.

If you’re an individual, however, you can drop off your old TV with us for free . Other recycling services, charities and non-profit organizations might also do the same. What Type Of TV Do You Have

You might be thinking, Any e-waste center near me will take whatever I have to donate, but that would be incorrect. A certain kind of TV, called a CRT TV, requires a special recycling process that not all e-recycling centers are equipped to handle. You should determine what kind of TV youre trying to get rid of before you start looking for an e-waste center so you can narrow your search. If you find where to recycle old TVs, but not the kind of old TV youve got, thats not going to help anybody.

If youre wondering why CRT TVs have a special recycling process, its because of what theyre made of. Not only do they contain a lot of lead, but they also contain some tubes that are liable to implode if theyre not handled correctly. Those tubes are called Cathode Ray Tubes, which is what CRT stands for. Since they require special handling, youll need to find a special e-recycling center to take them.

The natural next question would be, How do I tell if I have a CRT TV? Well, there are a few telltale signs. The first is simply the shape. If its got a bit of junk in the trunk, its probably a CRT. If its flat, its probably not. You can also perform a little unscientific test knock on the screen . Is it hard glass, or does it give a little? If its rock-solid, its a CRT. A plasma screen has a little bit of give to it. Know what kind of TV youve got and search for where to recycle old TVs accordingly.

Why Should You Recycle Your Televisions And Monitors

You should always recycle your TVs and monitors to keep them out of our precious landfills. TVs and monitors are made up of several different hazardous materials that are harmful to the environment. Old CRT televisions and monitors contain high levels of lead in the glass. Exposure to lead can affect mental and physical development and at high levels be fatal.

They also contain cadmium which is another toxic element. Acute exposure to cadmium may cause flu-like symptoms including chills, fever, and muscle ache sometimes referred to as the cadmium blues. Symptoms may resolve after a week if there is no respiratory damage. More severe exposures can cause tracheo-bronchitis, pneumonitis, and pulmonary edema. In newer TVs and monitors such as LCD, LED, and Plasma displays, traces of mercury and other materials can be found and be harmful if exposed.

It is also important to recycle your TVs and Monitors because they contain rare materials that can be recycled and reused in new products and save money and precious resources for extracting more materials. They can take up a lot of precious space in landfills and take a long time to remove because of their size.

If you have monitors or TVs that need to be recycled call California Electronics Recycle at today. You may be eligible for a free business pickup.

    Selling My Old Devices

CraftyMomz: Old Dresser = Entertainment Center!!!

Selling your old devices can take a little bit of work, especially if youre trying to get top dollar for them. It pays to look around, get quotes at a few different sites, and see what you can get for them. On one of my devices I found that the average selling prices on eBay were about $25, but if sold on Amazon would bring in closer to $50. Another item I found I could get the best return by selling on eBay. All three of the items had no trade-in value when I looked at the popular trade-in sites like Gazelle and NextWorth. Typically it seems your devices have to be relatively new and popular, like iPads and iPhones.

This week I decided to sell three items. Lets take a look at how it went with all three.

    Nexus 7 8GB 1st Generation Tablet

This item I didnt think Id be getting much, or any, money for. The tablet had come flying out of its case while I was walking through a parking lot, and landed screen down on the asphalt. The screen cracked and the touchscreen was inoperable. After doing some research I found that there was an active marketplace for repairable items on eBay where people will buy broken electronics and repair them.

Broken tablets like mine were routinely selling for between $25 and $50.

I listed the tablet on eBay and after a week at auction, it sold for about $41 with $9 shipping. Not too bad for a broken tablet that would have just sat in a drawer.
