Apple TV 4k : Software And Performance

The new Apple TV 4K runs the same tvOS operating system as the previous one, so if you’ve used an Apple TV before, there’ll be no surprises. If you’ve never bought an Apple TV before, tvOS will be a welcome breath of fresh air to whatever default pre-installed pile of poo your TV came with. tvOS, of course, enjoys the regular updates and support that all of Apple’s software does, but there are a few extra bits that make the new Apple TV 4K a more viable upgrade option.

The first is 4K HDR 60 FPS support, powered by the new chip. If you like frames, you’re going to love the new Apple TV. The old one supported 30 FPS, and doubling the frame rate is a serious boost to the content quality on display. I’ve found myself sat for hours just watching random 4K 60 FPS HDR video walkthroughs of cities like Tokyo and New York. Whilst not everyone likes 60 FPS content , I’ve found the increased frames to be an absolutely tremendous upgrade on the previous viewing. 60 FPS support is one of the new Apple TV 4K’s best features.

New Apple TV Price Rumours

Noted Apple tipster Ming-Chi Kuo claims the rumoured Apple TV 2022 device could “improve cost structure” that’s analyst speak for “it’ll be cheaper”. He’s also said that Apple’s “aggressive” strategy would help it “close the gap with its competitors”.

As it stands, the Apple TV HD is undercut by a growing number of rival streamers. You can bag the and the Roku Streaming Stick+ for around £50 / $50 / AU$100, or the for £60 / $50 / AU$99. What’s more, most pack 4K HDR whereas the entry-level Apple TV makes do with HD.

If the Apple TV 2022 were to launch for, say, around £69 / $79 / AU$119 it would certainly give buyers on a budget pause for thought. There’s even precedence for a cheaper Apple TV the second and third generation models both debuted at $99.

Fingers crossed Apple will show its hand by the end of this year.

Not willing to wait? The latest and greatest Apple TV a high-end, 4K streamer can be yours right now for £179 with 32GB of storage, or £199 with 64GB of storage.

Apple TV 4k : Hardware And Design

The Apple TV is the same sleek black box it always has been and looks no different from six feet away than it did in 2017.

Under the hood, it has Apple’s A12 Bionic processor, which first debuted in the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR in 2018. The old Apple TV was no slouch, so you might not notice any visible difference in how the TV responds to menu navigation, but you will certainly reap the benefits as you start to open more apps and games through multitasking, and if you pop in a controller and take to Apple Arcade or one of the App Store’s games you’re bound to notice that the A12 is a welcome improvement in performance. Personally, I’ve upgraded from the Apple TV HD, so I certainly noticed a big jump in speed and responsiveness. The processor also powers support for the new 4K HDR content in 60 FPS, a big leap we’ll talk about in the software section.

Like previous models, the Apple TV comes in 32GB and 64GB options. The Apple TV can offload unused apps automatically, and most content on the platform is actually streamed. Some people just want the peace of mind of having the most storage possible, but for me, the 64GB option seems a bit surplus to requirements in the age of streaming. Save yourself the $20 the Apple TV 4K is expensive enough as it is. Speaking of expensive, the Apple TV 4K doesn’t come with an HDMI cable in the box, which seems a bit stingy for $179. If you don’t own one already, you’ll need to pick one up separately.

Apple TV 2022 Early Thoughts

The new Apple TV is coming out mid

“It’s a little more difficult to call a hobby these days,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook in 2014, not long after the company had Apple TV sales totalling $1.1billion.

Eight years later and the Apple TV 4K remains the best media streamer on the market but, as we pointed out in our review, it’s also notably “pricier than alternatives”.

Apple TV 2022 could take things to the next level by combining support for 4K HDR with Apple’s super-slick tvOS 15 platform in an all-in-one nifty streaming stick priced to complete with Amazon’s wildly-popular Fire TV Stick .

We could even see Apple follow Amazon’s lead and releasing a whole range of streaming devices, from a low-cost entry level dongle to a state-of-the-art ‘Apple TV Pro’.

Excited? Us too. If the rumours are true, Apple TV 2022 could be on the shelves by Christmas…

The Sky Is Everywhere

What its about: According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, Apple has teamed up with indie production company A24 to produce a film adaptation of the young adult novel The Sky is Everywhere.

The novel tells the story of a high school girl whose older sister suddenly dies. She forms a relationship with her sisters former fiancé and also with the new boy in town, who loves music as she does. Amid the coping with the loss of her sister, she has to choose between these two romantic entanglements.

Important names: Josephine Decker will direct and produce, and author Jandy Nelson will write the screen adaptation of her own book.

What To Expect From The Next Apple TV

While Kuo has provided us with an insight into when to expect the new Apple TV, and its cheaper focus, the analyst has yet to provide any solid details on what it might actually offer.

Its safe to assume itll offer the same core Apple TV experience as recent models, with support for tvOS and its suite of TV-compatible apps including most popular streaming services.

After all, Kuo suggests Apples strategy is to integrate hardware, content and service amid the recession and access to apps like Apple Music, Apple Arcade and Apple Fitness on the platform will be key.

Those hoping for an affordable 4K model might be out of luck though we cant imagine itll make the jump to 4K and risk cannibalising the Apple TV 4K, suggesting that like the existing HD model, itll be capped at 1080p.

Bloombergs that the new Apple TV could feature an upgraded A14 Bionic chipset and an additional 1GB of RAM, though its unclear whether hes referring to the entry-level model or an update to the more powerful 4K variant. Logic suggests the latter considering the current 4K model features an A12 Bionic, and Apple wouldnt want to make its entry-level product more powerful than its pro variant, but its unconfirmed for now.

We imagine well be hearing a lot more about the new affordable Apple TV over the next few months, and well be sure to update this section with any new rumours and leaks as soon as they appear.

Apple TV Wish List: What I Want In A 2022 Refresh

Apple updated the remote just last year, so more changes this year are unlikely, but here goes.

Eli Blumenthal

Senior Editor

Eli Blumenthal is a senior editor at CNET with a particular focus on covering the latest in the ever-changing worlds of telecom and streaming. He previously worked as a technology reporter at USA Today.

Apple gave the Apple TV 4K a much-needed refresh last year. While the updates weren’t as expansive as I had hoped, they did fix some of the device’s most glaring holes, particularly by adding a better remote and a faster, more modern processor.

Given the company’s less-than-frequent cadence for updating its streaming device, we probably shouldn’t expect any new hardware for a while. After all, the gap between the 2021 refresh and the previous Apple TV 4K was nearly four years. To think we’d be getting another update one year later is some real wishful thinking.

But this is a wish list, so if there is any place for CNET reviewers to indulge our hopes and dreams, this is it. Here are some of the things I would like Apple to do in the television space in 2022.

New Apple TV 4k Coming With The Upgrade Everyones Waiting For

Apple tvOS 13 is Out! – What’s New?

Apple TV and remote control. It’s looking likely a new remote is coming.

Apple

Apple launched the Apple TV 4K back in 2017 and it had many brilliant things to its credit. But there was one element which was not universally popular: the remote control.

There have been enticing prospects of a radically different remote revealed by an Apple patent. But more concrete details how suggest a redesigned remote will be coming, according to 9to5Mac.

The control had the same simplicity that Steve Jobs rightly championed when the very first Apple TV was launched in 2007 tiny, light and with hardly any buttons. But where the original white plastic remote and its successor, a slick aluminum model had easy-to-use direction pads, the Siri remote, first seen in 2015 on the Apple TV HD, replaced this with a clickable touchpad.

And while some actions were simple, it was all too common to accidentally touch it and find yourself rewinding at speed just by picking the remote up.

Not to mention that it was easy to hold it the wrong way round and find yourself clicking on the bottom, not the top.

What’s The Difference Between Apple One And Apple TV+

Apple One is another service that is available which incorporates Apple TV+ into a full-bundle deal with other Apple services.

Payments start at £14.95a month and includes automatic access to Apple TV+, Apple Music, Apple Arcade and iCloud.

So while it’s a bit more on the expensive side, it could also be a nice little saver if you’re signing up to these things separately anyway.

This Is The Apple TV I’d Love To See In 2022

If Apple is serious about its TV business, this is what the next Apple TV needs to include

ByMat Gallagherlast updated 16 January 22

The next generation of the Apple TV 4K launched in April 2021 but this was far from the reinvention many were hoping for. Instead, we got a very nice new remote, high frame rate HDR and color balance adjustments.

While the Apple TV+ service can be accessed from a wide range of platforms, including some smart TVs, the Apple TV 4K remains the single dedicated streaming device that Apple offers . With such a prominent position I feel a new model rather than an update is overdue and should happen in 2022.

That’s not to say that the Apple TV 4K feels outdated, because it really doesn’t. It’s fast, has plenty of storage and delivers a great range of services in ultra-high definition. However, below are some areas I feel the Apple TV could do more.

Advanced Features And Apple Arcade Support

This is where things get really neat, especially if youre deep in Apples walled garden. The Apple TV 4K packs a ton of advanced features, many of which rely on an iPhone or one of Apples subscription services.

My favorite of these features, called Adjust Color Balance, turns your iPhone into a calibration tool for your TV. You just place your iPhone up to the TV screen, wait a bit, and let Apple TV 4K calibrate itself with accurate color, brightness, and contrast ratios.

But Im also a huge fan of typing on Apple TV 4K. Other devices force you to type using the remote, which sucks, but Apple TV 4K will automatically bring up a keyboard on your iPhone every time you want to log in or search through an app.

Additionally, Apple TV 4K supports AirPlay. This feature lets you cast content from an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Watch directly to the big screen.

And if you have an Apple Arcade subscription, you can use the Apple TV 4K for gaming. Its an interesting feature that should appeal to families with young children, as it opens a huge library of games without the need for a console.

I should note that Apple Arcade has some great games for adults. Theres Fantasian, an exclusive game developed by Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi. And for gamers who cant get enough of Altos Odyssey, Apple Arcade offers a unique version of the game with extra content.

Apple TV Vs Your Smart TV: What’s The Difference

Apple TV reviews: What everyone is saying about the new streaming media ...

Pretty much all new TVs are smart TVs these days, meaning that they come with one of a variety of operating systems that allow you to stream movies and shows from your favorite apps without having a separate dongle. But if you have an iPhone users or other Apple devices that are extra advantages of an Apple TV.

If you have an iPhone, an Apple TV allows you to easily cast music or a move/show to your TV. It gives you access to Apple’s gaming and fitness services . And it allows you to use your HomePod or HomePod mini as TV speakers .

What You Need To Know

  • Apple is rumored to be working on a new Apple TV device.
  • The upgraded Apple TV is said to pack a new A14 chip.
  • An extra 1GB of RAM is expected to be added to the new machine.

Often the forgotten product of Apple’s lineup, the Apple TV set-top box could be in for a big update according to a new report.

Last updated last year, the current best Apple TV is powered by an A12 chip. That could all change soon enough, with Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reporting that a new A14-powered device is in the works. Writing via the Power On newsletter, Gurman notes that the product will also gain an additional gigabyte of RAM two improvements that will make the new Apple TV more suited to playing games. Gurman also believes that will dovetail nicely with improvements coming to tvOS 16 later this year.

The new Apple TV, code-named J255, is in development with an A14 chip and an additional gigabyte of RAM. That compares with the A12 chip announced as part of the 2021 Apple TV last year and could be useful for additional gaming capabilities rolling out in tvOS 16.

While the controller situation won’t be fixed with these newly-rumored upgrades, we can expect the additional horsepower afforded by the upgraded silicon and additional RAM to be beneficial to developers. Games can be more visually impressive, with larger levels and more all made possible by the extra memory.

Apple TV 4k Vs Apple TV 4k

Apple just updated the Apple TV 4K so now you might see 2017 and 2021 models. So, what’s the difference? And if you have a 2017 model, is it worth upgrading to a 2021 model?

The Apple TV 4K is very similar to the older version. In fact, they look identical and have most of the same capabilities, including access to Apple Arcade and Fitness+, and support for immersive video and audio technologies, such as 4K HDR, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.

The difference is that Apple TV 4K has a faster processor , as well support for HDMI 2.1 and Wi-Fi 6. This also allows the Apple TV 4K to support 4K TVs with higher frame rates : 4K at up to 60fps. Basically, if you’ve bought a new 4K TV within the last year or two, the Apple TV 4K will likely be able to get the most out of it.

Maybe the most obvious difference is that the Apple TV 4K comes with redesigned Siri Remote. It scrapes the old touchpad in favor of a more traditional D-pad controller, and it has dedicated buttons for power and Siri. Also, it’s a little thicker, more ergonomic and not as symmetrical .

If you have an older Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD, you can purchase the new Siri Remote for $59. If you buy any new Apple TV from Apple, you’ll get the new Siri Remote .

Apple TV 4k Review: Price And Release Date

The Apple TV 4K 2nd-gen costs $179 for the 32GB model and $199 for the 64GB. It was released May 21 and is available for purchase at the Apple Store or major retailers.

The Apple TV 4K is, by far, the most expensive 4K streaming device on the market. Our top pick among the best streaming devices, the Roku Streaming Stick Plus, retails at just $49.99 . Its also capable of displaying HDR content at 60fps. The same goes for the Fire TV Stick 4K and , which are the same price. All three of those devices come with decent remotes, too.

So, essentially, the Apple TV 4K 2021 offers similar features to these competitors at over three times the cost. What youre really paying for is an Apple device that works seamlessly with other Apple products to create a happy Apple atmosphere, as well as the Apples TVs selection of apps and games.
