What Is Airplay 2
Apples AirPlay 2 standard lets you use Apple devices to control media playback, stream audio, mirror your screen, or do other similar things. Its built into Apple devices like the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Think of it a bit like Apples version of Chromecast.
Previously, you could use AirPlay with your TVbut only if you purchased an Apple TV and connected it to your TV. There are unofficial AirPlay receiver software programs you can run on a PC or Mac connected to your TV, but nothing official. Now, AirPlay will be integrated into many smart TVs from many manufacturers.
This isnt a replacement for Googles Chromecast. We saw TVs that had both Chromecast and AirPlay integrated. You can use whichever your devices work best with. Choice is great!
AirPlay isnt officially supported on Windows, but VideoLAN has announced plans to integrate AirPlay support into a future version of the popular VLC Media Player. VLC already has built-in support for Chromecasting, too.
Dont Expect Tcl To Support Airplay 2 In Its Smart TVs Any Time Soon
Apple decided that 2019 was going to start off with a bang as the company announced that AirPlay 2 support was landing on several different smart TVs from different brands.
So far up to this point, Samsung kicked things off in announcing AirPlay 2 support for its smart TV lineup. Soon after that, we heard that Vizio was doing the same thing, followed by Sony and LG announcing support. That basically means all of the major TV manufacturers are on board with this, which makes sense as Apple is going big with this particular shift in strategy.
Of course, with all the attention being put on the biggest TV manufacturers, what about some of the other brands out there? TCL, for instance, has started to gain traction with the TV market in the United States, so would that company be adopting support for AirPlay 2 and HomeKit at some point in the future? Turns out thats a big no.
MacRumors got a comment from a TCL spokesperson on this very subject, learning that the tV manufacturer has no plans on stopping its partnership with Roku, and, as a result of that, will not be going out of its way to support AirPlay 2. The company said it is currently committed to Roku, and left it at that.
How Can I Use Airplay On A TV
We saw AirPlay on smart TVs in action at CES 2019, and it will come to consumer TVs soon.
When you have a TV that supports AirPlay integration, that TV will appear as an AirPlay device on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac. You can select your smart TV just like youd select an Apple TV, HomePod, or other AirPlay-enabled devices.
In other words, its just like using AirPlay with an Apple TV today, but you dont need any extra hardware.
We also saw TVs that integrated information about AirPlay right into their home screen. You can select the AirPlay option on your TVs home screen to see instructions describing how to use AirPlay with your TV.

A bunch of Roku players just got a lot more useful this week with the launch of Apple AirPlay and HomeKit support.
If you have a supported 4K Roku player or TV and either an iPhone or iPad running at least iOS 12.3, you can use AirPlay to send videos, music, and photos to your TV from a wide range of mobile apps. This is the first time AirPlay has been available on streaming boxes and sticks other than Apples own Apple TVs . With 4K Roku players starting at $40, versus $180 for the Apple TV 4K, theyre a much cheaper way to add AirPlay to any television.
While it might seem like a small feature, AirPlay adds a lot of capabilities that Roku previously lacked, including HBO Max support, easy music playback from your phone, and even big-screen video chat. Id argue that the arrival of AirPlay is Rokus most substantial software update in years.
Heres a rundown of some things you can now accomplish on certain Roku players that were difficult or impossible to pull off before:

Roku announced that an update rolling out to users now will enable HomeKit and AirPlay 2 on some devices and TVs as soon as today.
The update version OS 9.4 will reach user’s devices today and Roku smart TVs soon. The update will enable users to directly control media and content on the Roku devices via their iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Siri.
AirPlay 2 enables devices to connect in a multi-room audio setup to play the same music to every device in perfect sync. It also displays now-playing content within the audio control section of your Apple device. Users can also use AirPlay 2 to stream their device’s screen to their Roku TV screen or play videos from video apps.
The addition of HomeKit means that the devices will show up in the Home app where users can manage the device and add it to Home automations. For example, users will be able to tell Siri to play audio to a certain room, which will include the added Roku device. HomeKit automations will be able to stop audio playback when a user leaves their house, or start it once returning home.
Roku says that the following devices will receive OS 9.4:
- Roku Ultra
Play Music Or Podcasts From More Sources
Mentioned in this article
While this years Roku Ultra supports Bluetooth for playing music or podcasts from your phone, other Roku players arent so lucky. In those cases, youre limited to Rokus own selection of apps, which isnt bad, but is missing certain sources like Apple Music, Overcast, and Spotify Stations. Besides, searching for artists on your phone is easier than thumbing around with a remote.
AirPlay turns Roku into a much more versatile music player. Just follow the same playback instructions as you would for other apps like HBO Max to start playing your tunes.

All The Samsung Sony And Lg TVs With Airplay Support Or Apple TV Built In Plus Compatible Roku Chromecast & Amazon Fire Sticks
If you’re wondering how to watch Apple’s TV+ streaming service on the smart TV in your living room, or looking for a way to stream from your iPhone or iPad to the big screen, look no further. In this article we run through all the Samsung, Sony and LG smart TVs that have the Apple TV app built in, as well as the TVs that are compatible with AirPlay and AirPlay 2 – the proprietary wireless standards for sharing videos, photos and music from an Apple device to a TV screen or speaker.
We’ll also discuss how you can now use a Roku, Amazon Fire TV or Google Chromecast to access Apple TV+ content. And the new game consoles Xbox Series X and Series S that launched in November 2020 also include the Apple TV app, as does the PlayStation 5.
Apple’s TV+ streaming service features shows from the likes of Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Steven Spielberg and JJ Abrams, and the content is available via Apple’s TV app. We have a separate guide to what’s on Apple TV+. We also look into what you can watch for free on Apple TV.
If you subscribe to Apple TV+ you will be able to watch the new Apple shows on Apple devices or on a TV if you have an Apple TV set-top box, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Google Chromecast, or one of the following smart TVs.
How To Add The Apple TV Channel
Follow the instructions below on how to add the channel to your compatible TCL Roku TV
- Press the Home button on your TCL Roku TV remote
- Scroll up or down and select Streaming Channels
- Select Search Channels.
- Enter Apple TV on the search field. Note: If Apple TV does not appear on the search results, it may not be supported on your Roku device.
- When you see the channel, use the directional pad on your TCL Roku TV remote to highlight Apple TV.
- Press the OK button OK button on Roku remote to view details.
- Select Add Channel.
- Once installed, the Apple TV channel will appear in the list of channels under Home on the main screen of your Roku device
Perform A Factory Reset
There are two ways to do a hard rest on a TCL Roku TV. If your TV is responsive and you have your remote nearby, heres one method:
Youll be able to use the right arrow button to navigate from the Settings screen to the Factory reset screen.
The other method involves performing a hardware factory reset. This can come in handy if you cant use the menu navigation features on your TCL Roku TV, if youve lost your remote, or if you have an older model which doesnt have this function in the menu.
Both methods do the same thing, but only the latter is guaranteed to work and be available on all TCL Roku TVs.
What About Homekit And Itunes
Some TVs are also integrating HomeKit support, which will let you use Siri to control your TV like any other another smart home device. Other TVs are integrating a built-in iTunes Movies & TV Shows app so you can watch iTunes videos on your TV without any Apple devices.
Different TV manufacturers are choosing to support different features. Some TVs have AirPlay and HomeKit but no built-in iTunes, while other TVs have AirPlay and iTunes with no built-in HomeKit.
Specifically, we know that Samsung TVs will get AirPlay 2 and iTunes, but not HomeKit. LG and Vizio TVs will get AirPlay 2 and HomeKit, but not iTunes. However, you can always stream video content from iTunes to your TV using AirPlay 2.

Is Your Tcl Roku TV Everything Youve Dreamed Of
Were sorry to say that theres not much more you can do when it comes to cleaning up a Roku smart TV. On the other hand, this should be good news since you wont have to worry about running into the same issues that plague your Android devices.
What is perhaps debatable is how much TCL Roku TVs are worth it, given their limited functionality. Do you find them to be awesome deals for the average home entertainment center or a bit too pricey given that they lack browsing, online shopping, and other typical Android smart TV features? Roku Now Rolling Out Homekit And Airplay 2 For Streaming Devices And Smart TVs
Back in September, Roku announced that it would add HomeKit and AirPlay 2 support sometime this year. The new features are now rolling out to 4K Roku streaming devices as well as Roku TV models.
AirPlay 2 and HomeKit have rolled out to a variety of smart TVs over the last two years, from companies such as LG, Samsung, and Vizio. Rokus rollout is particularly notable because of the companys popular streaming sticks and set-top boxes that are oftentimes more affordable than the competition.
Here are the Roku players that support HomeKit and AirPlay 2:
Companies such as TCL and Sharp also sell smart TVs that are powered by the Roku platform. In a blog post today, Roku confirmed that these devices will also be updated to Roku OS 9.4 and add HomeKit and AirPlay 2 support in phases over the coming weeks.
AirPlay 2 support on Roku products will make it easy for you to share or mirror content from your iPhone, iPad, or Mac to your TV. HomeKit support allows your TV to integrate with the Home app on your device, manage playback with Siri, add your TV to scenes and automations, and more.
Roku added support for Apple TV+ and the Apple TV app last year as well.
If you own any of the aforementioned Roku streaming products, you can update starting today to gain HomeKit and AirPlay 2 functionality. If you receive the new features on your device, let us know what you think down in the comments!
