Defending champion Brazil gets the ball rolling on Sunday afternoon when it takes on Venezuela in the first game of Group A.
Winners on home soil two years ago, the Seleção will hope to repeat the feat this year after stepping in as the tournament host just two weeks ago.
Originally scheduled to be jointly hosted by Argentina and Colombia, the tournament’s fate was thrown up in the air after CONMEBOLSouth American soccer’s governing bodystripped the latter of the hosting rights due to ongoing civil unrest.
Argentina’s offer to host the entire tournament was also deemed unsatisfactory by CONMEBOL because of the country’s surging coronavirus infection rate.
Brazil rode to the rescue, but not without controversy, as public opinion was split over President Jair Bolsonaro’s desire to host the tournament at a time when the country has the world’s second-highest death toll from COVID.
Bolsonaro dismissed the concerns in typically bullish style and the Copa America will go ahead, albeit in a different format from recent iterations.
For the first time since 1991, the tournament will feature only the 10 South American teams and no guest countries from other confederations, with Australia and Qatar forced to pull out as the Copa America clashes with the rearranged 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

Cbs Sports Announce Coverage Plans For Concacaf World Cup Qualifiers
CBS Sports today revealed its commentator lineup and coverage plans for the final round of Concacaf Mens World Cup Qualifiers. CBS Sports will provide coverage of 21 matches during the September and October windows, including all U.S. road matches and all Mexico home and away matches.
Action kicks off on Thursday, Sept. 2, with every match on Paramount+ and select matches also on CBS Sports Network. Additional match windows and coverage details, including October studio coverage, will be announced at a later date.
Host Kate Abdo and analysts Clint Dempsey, Charlie Davies and Oguchi Onyewu return for CBS Sports live pre-match, halftime and post-match studio show. Nico Cantor will also contribute to studio coverage. In addition to traditional pre-match elements, studio coverage will provide live look-ins during the ongoing matches.
CBS Sports coverage of the Concacaf Mens World Cup Qualifiers features the United States, Canada, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico and Panama.
