Connect With An Adapter Or Cable
If you don’t have a Chromecast-compatible device, use an HDMI cable and adapter to connect your phone to your TV and mirror what’s on your screen. You have a few different options here, and which one you choose will depend on the type of display you’re connecting to, how long, andmost importantlywhether or not you’ll need to charge your phone while doing it.
The simplest option is a USB-C to HDMI adapter. If your phone has a USB-C port, you can plug this adapter into your phone, and then plug an HDMI cable into the adapter to connect to the TV. Your phone will need to support HDMI Alt Mode, which allows mobile devices to output video. This method will take up your charging port, unless your adapter has a charging port.
If you have an older Micro USB-style port, you will need a micro USB to HDMI adapter. With this method, your phone will need to support a different protocol called MHL. If you have a supported phone, hook it up to the adapter, then attach an HDMI cable and connect it to a TV.
Can You Connect An iPhone Or iPad To TV With Usb
As iPhones and iPads dont have USB, you cant use this as a connection method. But you can connect iOS devices to a TV using a cable.
If you own an iPhone 5 or newer, it will have a Lightning connector. To connect your iPhone to a TV youll need the Lightning digital AV adapter for HDMI outputs, or the Lightning to VGA adapter if you have a VGA display. Buy the cable that fits your TV.
Older iOS devices with the old 30-pin port instead use the 30-pin VGA adapter.
You can connect an iPad to your TV through the same means. Again, youll most likely need a Lightning cable for this. Only the iPad 3 and earlier use a 30-pin cable. All other iPads, including every iPad Mini and iPad Pro, use a Lightning cable.
Once youve plugged in your adapter, simply hook up the video output to your display. Then, your phone screen will mirror to the TV. Apples official Lightning adapters contain an additional Lightning port for charging while viewing content on a second screen.

Underlying Support: The Many Roles Of Usb
You might think of your old USB Type-A port simply as a data port for connecting drives or peripherals like mice. But USB-C, depending on the specific port’s implementation, can do much more. One of USB-C’s most useful skills, when designed thus, is delivering enough power to charge the host device, such as laptop or smartphone. In fact, many lightweight laptops that have USB-C ports use them in place of a traditional barrel-style connector as the only option for attaching an AC adapter.
USB-C’s support for sending simultaneous video signals and power means that you might be able to connect to and power a native DisplayPort, MHL, or HDMI device, or connect to almost anything else, assuming you have the proper adapter and cables. The USB-C spec even factors in audio transmissions over the interface, but so far it has not replaced the 3.5mm headphone jack on computers to the same degree as it has on phones and tablets.
Make sure to check the specs on any PC you’re thinking of buying, because not all USB-C ports are alike. So far, every one we’ve seen supports both data transfers and connected-device power delivery over USB-C . But while the USB-C standard supports connecting DisplayPort and/or HDMI displays with an adapter , not every PC maker has connected the ports to every system’s graphics hardware. Some USB-C ports on a system may support video-out connectivity, while others may not or none may. Looking at the details is important.

Use Chromecast To Stream With iPad Or iPhone
Apple isn’t the only company that offers a streaming device for iPhone and iPad. There’s also the Chromecast from Google that’s similar but works wirelessly.
Chromecast works much differently than the adapter in that not everything on the screen can be streamed to the TV. Streaming is app-specific, meaning that you must have an app that supports Chromecast to see the content on the TV.
While there are lots of apps that support Chromecast, you’re limited in that you can’t stream your iPad or iPhone home screen, nor can you open just any app and stream the whole thing to your TV. You need extra software to make AirPlay work with Chromecast.
Make sure the Chromecast and iOS device are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
This is the easiest way to connect them together, though there are ways to use Chromecast without Wi-Fi.
Open a Chromecast-compatible app.
Select the cast button .
If asked, select the correct Chromecast from the list that you want to stream your iPad or iPhone to.
Connect Using A Lightning
As is the case with Android phones, the most foolproof way to connect your iPhone to your TV is with an adapter that plugs into the Lightning port on your iPhone. Because buying Apple accessories is rarely as simple as it seems, however, there are a few things to keep in mind.
First, not all third-party adapters are guaranteed to work with your iPhone or certain content carrying HDCP copyright protection. For this reason, we recommend forking over the cash for Apple’s official Lightning to HDMI AV adapter. Its $49 price tag is indeed hard to swallow with so many cheaper alternatives flooding the market, but it’s also the most reliable option at your disposal, given the finicky relationship between Apple devices and third-party hardware.
In addition to needing a long enough HDMI cable to traverse the distance between your iPhone and the TV, several Lightning-to-HDMI adaptersincluding Apple’s official adapterneed to be plugged into a power source via a standard Lightning cable while in use.

Screen Beam Mini Tube
If you dont own a Samsung device specifically or if you dont have a smart TV. Your best option will be a screen beam mini tube. How to connect the phone to tv using Bluetooth? Which is a wireless display receiver that doesnt need an internet connection because it works with Bluetooth? You just need to connect the power cable to the receiver which is a USB cable to the TV if it has a USB port. If it doesnt you can always use the charger that comes with it and also you need to connect the receiver to an HDMI port. If the place where the TV is located doesnt allow you to do so or maybe the receiver is taking a lot of space. It doesnt give you enough room for other HDMI cables or for any other reason. You can always use the HDMI extension cable as well.
Use A Cable Connection
Bear in mind that you might not always be able to stream content from your phone to the TV via wireless connectivity. Anyone who wants to avoid problems like this should run a direct connection to the Smart TV. You can do this with a smartphone or tablet via an HDMI cable.
While a compact HDMI output for tablets is hard to find, whether in the form of mini-HDMI or micro HDMI, you wont need this for your smartphone. Most phones simply dont have enough space for chunky adapters. This problem can be solved with the USB port expander Mobile High-Definition Link . MHL 3.0 even allows HDMI transmission of 4K content from mobile devices to Ultra-HD televisions.

Plug In An Hdmi Cable
The most obvious approach is to simply connect an HDMI cable between the phone, tablet, or laptop and the TV. Of course, that can be more easily said than done: while virtually all modern televisions will have a spare HDMI port, the same cant be said for mobile devices.
A few tablets and laptops have mini- or micro-HDMI sockets, but less so in recent times. Current smartphones definitely dont. There are plenty of cables to help get around that issue, but as usual, the devil is in the details.
A high-quality USB C to HDMI cable will do the job for modern devices with a USB C port, but the device needs to support both USB C 3.0 and DisplayPort Alternate Mode. None of my phones or tablets, even brand new ones, have that support built in.
You may have better luck with other devices, especially Samsung ones, so just be sure to double-check the exact specifications of your device before you buy. Recent laptops are much more likely to support this: the above cable works perfectly with both laptops Ive tested it on, a Macbook Pro and a Lenovo Yoga 920.
If youve got an older Android device with a micro-USB port, you may be able to use either a Slimport or active MHL adapter to do the same thing. Again, its important to make sure your phone or tablet supports one or the other standard before purchase.
The Right App Can Help
Free streaming apps like iMediaShare – Photos & Music come in handy. They let you transfer photos, videos and music from your smartphone or tablet to Smart TV or other DLNA-enabled devices, such as sound systems and set-top boxes. With iMediaShare, you can select by file type and also play videos in automatic succession on your TV. Another option is to install Android apps on the TV itself.
Casting over a wireless network is usually associated with delayed playback on Smart TVs. This doesnt matter so much with casting images, but it can make transmitting video a little annoying.

Slimport As Mhl Alternative For Older Devices
Google, along with other phone manufacturers, has not backed MHL, but rather SlimPort. Aside from HDMI, Slimport is can be used in combination with USB to output the signal to DVI, VGA, and DisplayPort. Unfortunately, that was only until the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X. Neither still supports HDMI output, SlimPort or MHL.
SlimPort-compatible devices are becoming rarer, although some manufacturers, like LG and HTC, still include MHL and/or Slimport support in their phones, but at this point its becoming hard to rely on. You’ll need to research your specific phone to be sure.
Connect Using Google Chromecast
While the plug-and-play route might be the simplest, you can make a wireless connection, too, without the aid of additional adapters. If you’ve got a or a TV with Chromecast built right into the software, your Android phone is, in all likelihood, ready to cast to your TV with no additional hardware needed. The only requirement is that both your Android device and your TV are on the same wireless network.
Just access the Google Home app, head to the Account tab, and select Mirror device. From here, tap Cast and select your TV from the list of available devices.

Cable Types: The Speed Factor
HDMI 1.4 and 2.0 don’t matter nearly as much as their speed ratings, also defined by the HDMI Forum and HDMI Licensing Administrator. Those specifications touch on speeds with their maximum bandwidths, but they don’t specifically define every cable. That’s why HDMI cables are grouped together under one of four speed categories: Standard, High Speed, Premium High Speed, and Ultra High Speed.
Each category has its own sub-categories based on additional features like an Ethernet channel built into the cable or a stronger signal for automotive use, but the main label you should worry about is whether your cable is Standard, High Speed, Premium, or Ultra High Speed.
Standard is the most basic, and slowest, HDMI cable you can get. It has a bandwidth of 4.95Gbps, which is enough to send a 1080p signal to your TV, but not much more than that. Standard HDMI cables are rare to find in stores, but if you find an unmarked cable in a bucket somewhere, or hooked up to a home theater system that hasn’t been upgraded in five years, it might be Standard. These cannot support 4K video at all.

Casting From Specific Apps
‘Casting’ is a general term that means sending content from one device to another, in this case from your mobile device to your TV.
It’s easy to spot when you can cast something because you’ll see a specific icon.
You’ll usually see the icon on video apps such as YouTube and Netflix. If you select the icon, it will then bring up a list of devices that content can be cast to. Simply select your TV and the image will be displayed.
If you can’t see your chosen video on the TV, then try returning to your TV’s home menu and cast again.
How To Use Casting To Watch Downloaded Movies On Smart TV
If youre curious how to play downloaded movies on a Smart TV without using the methods listed so far then youll learn a lot in this section. This will also cover how to play downloaded 4k movies on TV as well through casting or display mirroring.
Most recent Smart TVs will have features such as Miracast or Chromecast built in
The main difference to note is that Miracast does not require an internet connection and is often referred to as HDMI over WiFi by using WiFi direct. Chromecast on the other hand does require both of your devices to be on the same network.
If you are casting from an Apple device such as an iPhone or MacBook Pro, then Miracast will not be an option as it is not supported. Casting methods for Apple devices include Airplay if youre using an Apple TV or a display adapter or a downloaded App if using your Smart TV only. These options are covered in greater detail under the Airplay section of this article.
