Different Types Of Button Support
Not every universal remote will work the same with your Roku. There are two levels of button support you can find when programming a universal remote with your Roku.
- Basic: Remotes with the basic capabilities will help control a few important buttons such as power, volume, and input select.
- Expanded: With expanded button support, you can control everything that is available with the Basic level as well as a handful of other buttons such as home, up, down, right, left, back, replay, options, reverse scan, forward scan, and play or pause.
How To Pair A Roku Enhanced Remote
Simple remotes are IR-only and lack a voice control option. Rokus enhanced remotes add both voice control and wireless pairing, meaning you can control a TV regardless of which way youre pointing.
If youre pairing an enhanced/voice remote with an add-on Roku streamer , heres what to do:
- Unplug your Roku device, wait five seconds, then plug it back in. Youll need to plug it directly into your TV during setup, not a separate soundbar or receiver.
- Remove the battery cover from your remote. Insert batteries if you havent already.
- You should see a pairing button next to the battery slot. As soon as the Roku home screen appears, hold that button for five seconds or until a status light starts flashing.
Timing is tight since you have to hit the pairing button within the first 30 seconds of the home screen launching. If youre successful, a pop-up message will appear on your Roku. Restart the process if pairing fails.
Another important note: instructions are essentially identical if youre pairing with a Roku TV, except theres no need to unplug anything. Just turn your TV on and leave it on the home screen.
After your remote is paired, you may still need to configure it, so TV-specific controls work properly. From the Roku home screen, navigate Settings > Remotes & devices > Remote, choose your remote model, then Set up remote for TV control.

Automatically Level Out Your Volume
Volume leveling is accessible through the options button during video playback.
Don’t you hate it when commercials are louder than the program you’re watching or when explosions are so much louder than the rest of the dialogue? Roku’s automatic volume leveling makes it so these extremes are not nearly as pronounced as they might be otherwise.
To turn on automatic volume leveling, start playing whatever you want to watch. Hitting the Star icon will bring up in-movie settings. Click on Sound Settings and hit Volume Leveling. Clicking on it will turn on automatic leveling.
From this menu, you can scroll down to Night Mode. Clicking this will set a maximum sound threshold. This could be useful if you’re trying not to disturb other people in the house.

Determine Which Roku Remote You Have
Whether youre setting up a new Roku device or your remote and streaming device have become unpaired, the process of linking them back up will be the same.
Your first step will be to determine which type of remote you have: a Roku simple remote or a Roku voice remote. If your remote has a microphone icon beneath its purple directional pad, then its a voice remote. If it doesnt, its a simple remote.

Can You Use Your Phone As A Roku Remote
It is possible to use your phone as a Roku remote. To do so, you must install the Roku app on your Android or iOS smartphone.
Once youve done that, all you need to do is choose your Roku streaming device when prompted during the apps first launch.
However, you may need the original Roku remote to complete the setup of your phone as a remote. This is because you need to allow your Roku device to accept commands over WiFi.
If that option is disabled, you need to use your original Roku remote to change the setting as follows:
- Select the home button on your Roku remote
- Navigate to Settings by scrolling through the options using the arrow keys
- Go to Advanced System Settings under the System option
- Locate and click on Control by Mobile Apps
- You will get three choices to choose from after selecting Network Access
- Among the three, choose the Default option
Once the above steps are completed successfully, you will be able to discover your Roku device on the mobile app.
Just make sure that the two devices, the Roku and your phone, are connected to the same network. Failing to do so will restrict you from using the mobile remote to access Roku controls.

How To Control Your TV With A Roku Remote
William StantonRead more January 2, 2022
When you purchase a Roku device, youll probably get a designated remote that helps you navigate and browse your Roku player. However, this also requires a separate remote to power on your TV and adjust the volume.
This doesnt have to be the case, though. You may set up your Roku enhanced remote to work with your TV too, albeit with reduced features. This article will explain how a Roku remote can work with most TV brands.
Pairing A Roku Voice Remote Pro
If youre trying to pair a Roku Voice Remote Pro in addition to the remote that came with your Roku, youll want to ensure that the streaming box is running Roku OS 9.4 or higher. To do so, press the Home button on your remote, and then go to Settings > System and select System Update. Then, select Check Now, and the system will check for and install the latest update if necessary.
If your remote isnt working and youre not able to do this, go ahead and try the pairing process anywayif you have a recent enough OS version, it will work. If it doesnt, it might help to know that most Roku remotes are interchangeable. If you have another voice remote at home, you could try pairing it and using it on the streaming box to download any needed updates. Alternatively, the Roku app on your smartphone could also get the job done.

Set Up A Special Mode Just For Guests
The Guest Mode can be found in the System settings.
It can be great to have guests, but it can be annoying feeling obliged to offer them your streaming login info if they want to use your TV. No one wants to be rude, but it’s also not a good idea to share passwords. Roku’s guest mode addresses this conundrum by providing a place where your guests can sign in to their own streaming accounts instead of using yours.
To enable this feature, you’ll have to add a PIN to your Roku account, so your guests won’t be able to automatically access your personal content. Guests can then click on Guest Mode, where they’ll be prompted to choose a sign-off date.
Guests will have a home screen with some default channels, but will be able to download anything they want. They’ll be able to sign in using their own accounts and stream their shows as though the Roku were their own. On their chosen sign-off date, their profile will be deleted from the system. This could a useful feature for vacation rental owners. Now if only the physical cleanup was this easy!
Troubleshooting The Roku App
If your phone app cannot see your Roku box, there are a couple of possible causes:
- Network Access: Make sure your Roku box has not disabled its network access. Go to Settings > System > Advanced System Settings > Control By Mobile Apps > Network Access to check. You need to ensure either the Default or Permissive option is selected.
- VPN: Remember, the Roku remote app will not work if either your phone or your Roku box are connected to a VPN.
Sadly, if your Roku remote is still not working after checking all of these things, you may need to take the plunge and buy a new Roku remote.

Check Your Roku Remote Batteries
Let’s start with the most simple explanation: are you sure that your device’s batteries haven’t run out? A slowly degrading performance is a sure-fire indicator that the power supply could be the problem.
Some Roku remote controls require two AA batteries others require two AAAs. Check the sticker on the remote to check. The batteries are accessible from behind the sliding panel on the rear of the device.
How To Pair A Roku Ir Remote
The good news is that Rokus IR simple remotes dont need to be paired at all. So long as they have charged batteries and are pointed towards the IR receiver on a Roku device, theyll work. This can be especially convenient in homes with multiple Roku products.
The catch, of course, is that IR remotes dont work with Roku hardware thats missing an IR receiver. That eliminates Streaming Sticks, which plug directly into HDMI ports and are meant to be out of sight.
