S: Establishment Of The Network

Foundations

The Fox network’s foundations were laid in March 1985 through ‘s $255 million purchase of a 50% interest in TCF Holdings, the of the 20th Century Fox film studio. In May 1985, News Corporation, a media company owned by Australian publishing magnate that had mainly served as a newspaper publisher at the time of the TCF Holdings deal, agreed to pay $2.55 billion to acquire in six major U.S. cities from the -run broadcasting company : WNEW-TV in New York City, in Washington, D.C., in Los Angeles, in , -TV in Chicago, and KRLD-TV in . A seventh station, ABC affiliate in , was part of the original transaction but was spun off to the subsidiary of the in a separate, concurrent deal as part of a related to that station’s 1982 sale to Metromedia.

Radio personality suggested that the Fox network is a revival or at least a linear descendant of DuMont, since Metromedia was founded when DuMont spun off its two remaining owned-and-operated stations, WNEW-TV and WTTG, as DuMont Broadcasting . Additionally, the former base of DuMont’s operations, the DuMont Tele-Centre in , eventually became the present-day Fox Television Center.

Fox survived where DuMont and other attempts to start a fourth network had failed because it programmed just under the number of hours defined by the FCC to legally be considered a network. This allowed Fox to make revenue in ways forbidden to the established networks , since during its first years it was considered to be merely a large group of stations. By comparison, DuMont had been saddled by numerous regulatory barriers that hampered its potential to grow, most notably a ban on acquiring additional stations, during an era when the FCC had much tighter ownership limits for television stations than it did when Fox launched. In addition, Murdoch was more than willing to open his wallet to get and keep programming and talent. DuMont, in contrast, operated on a shoestring budget and was unable to keep the programs and stars it had.

Most of the other startup networks that launched in later years followed Fox’s model as well. Furthermore, DuMont operated during a time when the FCC did not require television manufacturers to include UHF capability. In order to see DuMont’s UHF stations, most people had to buy an expensive . Even then, the signal quality was marginal at best compared to the signals of stations . By the time Fox launched, cable allowed UHF stations to generally be on an equal footing with VHF stations.

On January 5, 2022, reported that WarnerMedia and ViacomCBS were exploring a possible sale of either a majority stake or all of The CW, and that was considered a leading bidder. Network president/CEO confirmed talks of a potential sale in a memo to CW staffers after the news surfaced, but added that “It’s too early to speculate what might happen” and that the network “must continue to do what we do best”. Nexstar CEO played coy on his company’s part, hinting only in Spring 2022 that “I wouldnt be surprised if we owned a broadcast network” and other cable networks that could “layer on top of our local content foundation” .

The earlier reports of a sale of The CW led to speculation that new ownership could steer the network’s programming away from a younger audience. The first hint of this occurred in May 2022 , when The CW unveiled a fall schedule in which, for the first time, the number of shows renewed were outnumbered by those receiving cancellations: Ten shows were axed, including one-season shows and , and longtime fixtures , , , , , , and . While it met with poor ratings, Dynasty proved lucrative thanks to the Netflix output deal and international syndication which earned CBS Studios millions of dollars per episode.

Selling CW series like Dynasty to Netflix and overseas markets was so profitable for Warner and CBS that the network almost stopped cancelling shows, and expanded its broadcast schedule. On February 14, 2018, The CW announced that it would add a 2-hour primetime block on Sunday nights beginning in the fourth quarter of 2018, returning the network to Sundays for the first time since the lease to Media Rights Capital ended in 2009, as well as expanding The CW’s primetime slate from 10 hours a week to 12.
