What Is An Alexa Skill And How Does It Work

How To Turn On Your TV With Alexa Commands

Alexa is Amazon’s cloud-based voice service. Alexa Skills are voice-driven Alexa Cloud Service capabilities which enable you to control select products through the Amazon® Alexa app that runs on . With this feature you can use your voice to turn your TV on or off, change channels, control volume, and more.

There are two types of Skills in Alexa. The Skill you can select is based on the app installed on your TV:

  • For TVs with the TV Control with Smart Speakers app: Select the Sony’s TV skill, and enable it.
  • For TVs with the TV Control Setup with Amazon Alexa app: Select the Sony’s TV – Basic skill, and enable it.

Alternatively, you can also enable it by specifying the Skill name using your voice. Note: Alexa will not work if you try to use a Skill that is not compatible with your TV.

    Fire TV And Alexa Setup

    Mentioned in this article

With the exception of the first-generation Fire TV Stick, all Fire TV devices include an Alexa remote, which lets you issue voice commands by holding the microphone button at the top. But for hands-free voice commands, youll need either a separate Alexa device or a Fire TV Cube, which has built-in microphones for picking up voice commands.

Pairing an Echo to a Fire TV is automatic if you only have one Fire TV device. Just use any TV-related voice command and youll be on your way. Setting up additional Fire TV devices requires some extra steps:

    • Open the Alexa app on your phone, hit the menu button in the top-left corner, and select Music, Video, and Books.
    • Select Fire TV from the video section.
    • Select Manage devices, and then Link Another Fire TV.
    • Choose the Fire TV you want to control.
    • If you have more than one Alexa device, choose which one should control the television.

    Failed Pairing Of Devices

Samsungs SmartThings represents one of the best modular systems, which means that it allows you to keep adding devices as time goes by. Unfortunately, this system is imperfect, with some users complaining about the inability of their new devices to be paired up with the existing smart home hub.

Often, the smart devices that are affected by this modular setup are the Motion Sensor, the Water Leak Sensor, Arrival Sensor, as well as the Multipurpose Sensor. Unfortunately, your Samsung TV could be a culprit too.

But what exactly causes these issues? Well, for the most part, defectiveness of the Remove to Pair pull-tab is the most common issue behind the failed pairing. And you can tell that this pull-tab is defective if the devices LED fails to light up, and obviously when the pairing process is impossible.

Fortunately, you can fix this issue with ease at home by removing the cover of your SmartThings device, removing the battery, and blowing the battery and the battery compartments. The other reasons why Alexa wont turn on your Samsung TV if it is hardwired, could be that the Eco mode may not be enabled.

How To Turn On Your TV Using The Fire TV Remote

    16 April 2021

All hail our CEC overlords. All hail Alexa. All hail Amazon Fire TV!

The Amazon Fire TV Remote also known as the Alexa Voice Remote is found on every iteration of Fire TV, from the Fire TV Stick Lite at the low end the to the Fire TV Cube on the high end. And while it is not necessarily the world’s best remote control, it has gotten better . And it does have one traditional trick up its sleeve. You can use your Amazon Fire TV remote to turn turn on your television.

Provided, of course, that your TV has support for CEC. That’s short for Consumer Electronics Control, and the short version is that it allows a device connected via HDMI to control aspects of of your television. Various brands have named CEC various awful things like Sony’s Bravia Link or Sharp’s Aquos Link or Insignia’s INlink but they all do the same thing. They let components do things to your TV like turn it off and on, or control the volume. Or they let your TV remote control a Blu-Ray player.

And CEC allows Amazon Fire TV to do things like turn your TV off and on, or change inputs, or raise and lower the volume.

But if you’re like me and really don’t want to have to actually talk to your Amazon Fire TV Cube to turn things on, you’re in luck. You can use the remote. Yes, the same remote that doesn’t have anything that looks like a power button.

And that just makes being able to get to all those sweet free movies and shows available on Amazon Fire TV even easier.
