However, there’s something important to note. If you have a 2017 model of these supported TVs, you can’t get the full Apple TV+ experience. While the app looks the same in name and appearance, you can only watch Apple TV+ movies and shows. You can’t rent, buy, or watch content from the iTunes store or other third-party channels, like you usually can if you experience Apple TV+ elsewhere.
Nevertheless, this is better than nothing. Although Apple TV+ launched in November 2019, it took Apple almost two years to release the app for older Samsung TVs. Hopefully, Apple will continue to improve the Apple TV+ experience on older Samsung TVs, and support more models.

The general consensus from streaming and media experts is that although Apple TV Plus has a solid lineup of original content and fantastic streaming quality, there simply isnt enough original content .
In our original Apple TV review, we noted that while it isnt exactly a runaway success, Apples streaming service is a solid contender. And it keeps adding more impressive content all the time. That said, in our comparisons with other top streaming services like Netflix and Disney Plus , the difference in the amount of content is staggering. Although both services cost more than Apple TV Plus, their catalogs are significantly larger and constantly growing.
Apple invested a lot of money into Apple Originals and many of them are truly worth watching. Disney Plus has The Mandalorian, Hulu has Handmaids Tale, and Netflix has Stranger Things and many others. Apple TV Plus isnt out of the running, with shows like The Morning Show and Ted Lasso getting plenty of attention, but its not breaking records.

Which TVs Have Apple TV Built In
There are lots of options that will allow you to stream Apple’s content to your TV screen without buying Apple hardware. The list of TVs that offer support for Apple TV is ever growing.
For example, in August 2020 LG added the Apple’s TV app to more of its models, including TV sets from 2018, which join the 2019 models that already supported the app. LG has also promised to add support for AirPlay 2 and HomeKit by October 2020, so there may be more coming in an update to the built-in software.
Previously, if you wanted to watch content streamed from your iPhone, iPad or Mac, or films and TV shows rented or purchased from Apple’s iTunes Store, on your television you needed an Apple TV set-top box plugged in.
With the price of an Apple TV starting at £149/$149, that was a high price to pay. Luckily you no longer need to have an Apple TV plugged into your set to be able to watch TV shows and movies from Apple or stream TV+ content.
Apple now allow its TV app to be offered on certain brands of smart TV and streaming sticks. So far the list includes smart TVs from the following manufacturers :

On Apple devices, for the 90-odd services and apps that aren’t channels, the Apple TV app only lets you browse those services and apps’ TV shows and movies, not play them. Clicking on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel from within the Apple TV app will bounce you out to the Amazon Prime Video app to watch, for example.
And for these apps that aren’t channels, the TV app doesn’t provide any way to download shows and movies for offline viewing — for that you’ll have to use the individual apps, which may or may not offer downloads. The Amazon Prime app has offered downloads for years, for example, and in late 2019.
On non-Apple devices, content from these apps doesn’t appear inside the Apple TV app at all. To browse content from those apps on Samsung TVs and using Roku and Fire TV devices, you’ll need to use their standalone apps.

Standalone Apple TV+ App Launches On Older Smart TVs
Apple has been rolling out the Apple TV app to many different platforms, including smart TVs, games consoles, and third-party streaming devices like the or Roku streaming sticks.
In a slight twist, the company is also launching a Apple TV+ app for older LG webOS TVs. Update: The TV+ app is also now available on older Samsung smart TV models.
The launch was first spotted by FlatpanelsHD, and later confirmed by an LG support document.
The standard Apple TV app is available on 2018 and newer LG webOS TVs. This special Apple TV+ app is targeted at 2016 and 2017 models.
Although the name and logo is different, the actual app experience appears identical to the TV app except that you can only watch TV+ content. The Watch Now and other iTunes Store tabs are simply missing.
Somewhat comically, that means this app has just three tabs in the top navigation Apple TV+, Search and Settings. It also means that the Up Next functionality previously found in the Watch Now tab is now awkwardly located as an inline row at the top of the tv+ page.
It is true that many proponents of Apple TV+ including me have wanted less focus on the iTunes Store in the TV app in order to focus on the content available to us with the subscription, but this particular stripped-down incarnation is not quite what we had in mind.

What About Itunes Movies And TV Shows
On every device with the TV app, shows and movies you already own now appear in the top menu as well as the Library section, which breaks out iTunes content by category and includes separate sections for 4K HDR and Downloaded . iTunes content appears in the TV app’s recommendations, curated rows and the Up Next row at the top of the TV app.
On most devices you can also rent and purchase TV shows and movies from iTunes directly within the TV app. The exception is Fire TV, which only lets you watch iTunes content you’ve already purchased.
Big difference between Apple TV app on Fire TV and Roku : Only Roku lets you buy/rent new movies/TV shows from iTunes from within the app. With Fire TV, you have to purchase iTunes stuff elsewhere.

Before you sell or give away your device or uninstall the Apple TV app or Apple TV+ app, you should reset the Apple TV app and Apple TV+ app. Resetting the Apple TV app and Apple TV+ app signs you out of your account, removes your personal information, and restores the apps to their original settings.
If you reset the Apple TV app and Apple TV+ app on a smart TV that’s also signed in to the Apple Music app, then the Apple Music app will also be restored to its original settings.
