How Bad Are The Ads
I sat down to watch a couple of different types of movies on Tubi to better understand the ad experience. The first was an animated film that I watched through Roku. I was shocked to find that I did not come across my first commercial break until nearly 40 minutes into the movie.
That seemed almost too good to be true, so I decided to chart the ads on the next movie. I watched a two-hour film using my laptop computer. Heres a look at the results for the ads:

Tubi is a free streaming service that offers a mix of on-demand content like TV series and movies and live streaming channels.
Founded in 2014 and headquartered in San Francisco, the United States-based company also services Canada and Australia. In 2020, it was announced that FOX acquired Tubi for $440 million. Per a report from the Los Angeles Times, Tubi had approximately 25 million monthly active users at the time of the acquisition.
How Much Is Tubi
While youre paying $17 for Netflix, $15 for HBO MAX and more for a live TV service, Tubi is charging their customers absolutely nothing.
Tubi is basically using Googles old business model. Where they get you in using their service, and then show you ads to pay for the business. But keep in mind that you get what you pay for when it comes to Tubi. So dont expect to see Game of Thrones, 90 Day Fiance, The Bachelor or many other top TV shows and movies on Tubi. At least not right away.
Ads will run before and during a movie or TV show. They are typically 15 to 30 seconds, so they arent tough to get through. And were not looking at 3 minutes straight of ads like Hulu does on its ad-supported plan. They are unskippable, as you might expect, so its a lot like watching YouTube.

According to their website, Tubi TV is a free Internet television network which says they are working on behalf of their customers to unlock Hollywood so that people can find television and movie entertainment completely for free.
They promise that they offer their customers one of the largest collections of premium and unique movies and television shows, and since they are partnered with large studios like Lionsgate and Paramount, they are always adding new programming.

What Does Tubi Lack
As with any free service, there are some things that are missing, or lacking with Tubi. First up is video quality. Its just 720p. Which, its fine, but on a 4K TV, it doesnt really look great. And there is nothing available in 1080p. Not to mention a lot of the content on Tubi was shot before the industry moved to HD, so you may not even get a 720p stream here. Depending on the platform, there is an option to adjust the quality, but not available on every platform.
Closed Captioning is also limited to just English. Which, for most of us in the US, that is probably not a problem. But not everyone speaks english. So being able to get closed captioning and/or the audio in other languages would be a nice feature to have.
You dont need to create an account to use Tubi, which is nice. It means you can just download it and get started watching content. But if you want to use parental controls, you will need to create an account. The parental controls are there, but not that robust. Basically, you can only limit what kids can watch, based on the rating for the program.
Whats a bit strange, is that the interface of Tubi does differ quite a bit from app to app. So if you use it on Fire TV and then move to Android TV or even to your Android smartphone, you may find a vastly different interface.

You can add content to your list to watch, but if you switch to another platform, your list wont switch, unless you create an account.
There are some parental controls available, but those are also very limited. Basically, you can limit content based on the rating. But you cant limit specific genres, or specific shows.
Its free, so you cant expect to have every feature and the kitchen sink included.
What Are Tubi’s Key Features
As mentioned before, Tubi is totally free and accessible from nearly any modern device you’re likely to wield so it has both of those things going for it.
More importantly, Tubi has a lot of free content available quite a bit more than Crackle, based on browsing the extensive listings. According to the company, Tubi has more than 50,000 titles in its library, with key partnerships with Lionsgate, Paramount, MGM, and Starz helping to keep its content coffers full.
Granted, you might not be compelled to watch everything on Tubi, and that’s about more than just preference. Tubi has a fair amount of random junk filling up its listings, with straight-to-DVD movies and a lot of other generic-looking fare that you’ve never heard of before. It’s not anywhere near as curated for quality as premium services tend to be, and you’ll have to dig around to find the good stuff.
But it does have a lot of stuff, and there are some solid gems in the mix. In terms of feature films, the selection as of this writing includes picks like Young Adult, Oldboy, True Grit , School of Rock, Mulholland Drive, and Glengarry Glen Ross.
Tubi doesn’t have a lot of high-profile TV shows, unfortunately, unless you’re into Alf … and why wouldn’t you be? It has some cult favorites, too, like The IT Crowd and Spaced, plus Tubi’s anime selection is pretty stellar, with series like Cowboy Bebop, Naruto, and Revolutionary Girl Utena available as of this posting.

NBC’s Peacock TV is a behemoth, with over 13,000 hours of content available in its Peacock Free tier. That content is top-notch, too. You’ll find titles like The Office, 30 Rock, Battlestar Galactica, Cheers, Friday Night Lights, Parenthood and Parks and Recreation. And there are a ton of movies to watch, from Harry Potter to Jurassic Park.
Peacock Free doesn’t require you to enter your credit card info, but you will have to watch ads including commercials for Peacock Premium, a tier with even more programming and originals. Speaking of that, as a Peacock Free viewer, you can sample the service’s originals like the Saved By the Bell reboot. All in all, we’d call Peacock Free a steal but it doesn’t cost anything!
The Viacom-owned Pluto TV has a decent selection of on-demand movies and shows but where it really shines is in live TV streaming. Viewers can browse live channels in a grid, similar to the cable TV guide experience. The lineup draws heavily from Viacoms other properties, so you can tune into TV Land Drama, BET Her, MTV’s Jersey Shore and VH1’s I Love Reality. They also offer other recognizable brands, like CNN and Fox Sports though those run curated clips, not the actual live broadcast youd see if you watched them on cable.

Luckily, since they are all free, you dont need to choose just one of the best free streaming services. However, you may find it difficult to balance a bunch of different apps and want to focus on just one or two.
The first consideration should be whether you want to be able to watch live channels. If thats the case, you should use Pluto TV, Sling Free, Xumo, Peacock or check to see if the Roku Channels new live TV guide is available for you. If you only care about finding movies and TV shows on-demand, then try Peacock, Crackle, IMDBtv, Tubi or Vudu.
