What Is Philo Team Clark Reviews The Live TV Streaming Service

Philo TV (on Roku) Review
Philo

Streamers who dont need access to live sports or local channels

Cloud DVR Hours
Supported Streaming Devices

Roku, Amazon Fire, Chromecast, Apple TV and select smart TVs

For $25 per month, a Philo subscription provides access to more than 60 popular broadcast and cable channels. There is no contract or cable box required. You can stream content live or on demand from your television, phone, tablet or computer.

The sales pitch for Philo is pretty simple: It has a bunch of the channels you like for a fraction of the monthly bill youd have with the cable company or even with some other live TV streaming services such as YouTube TV.

The trade-off for the low monthly price is that you have to give up three key live streaming offerings: live sports, news and local channels.

Still, money expert Clark Howard says Philo could be a real value for select streamers.

For people who dont care anything about sports, I love Philo as a live TV streaming option, Clark says.

Team Clark has tested Philo to see what makes it different from its competitors. Read on to learn what you need to know before you sign up!

The Big Chart: Top 100 Channels Compared

The main difference between the services is their channel lineups. All of them offer different slates of channels for various prices.

Below you’ll find a chart that shows the top 100 channels across all six services. There are actually seven listed because Sling TV has two different “base” tiers, Orange and Blue. And if you’re wondering, I chose which “top” channels made the cut. Sorry, AXS TV, Discovery Life, GSN and Universal HD. The most recent additions to the list are the Olympics Channel, which replaces the now-defunct NBC Sports Network, and Magnolia Network, which reflects DIY’s rebrand.

The past year has been very busy for live TV streaming. December had YouTube TV locked in a carriage dispute with Disney and 18 channels were blacked out for one day, but all were restored. In November DirecTV Stream launched its first PBS channels and YouTube TV added the Hallmark network while in October YouTube TV renewed a deal to keep NBC channels. Those changes are reflected in the chart below where applicable.

Hulu Plus Live TV increased its price by $5 — and threw in Disney Plus and ESPN Plus. It also added OWN to its channel lineup in 2022.

What Is Philo Philo Service Breakdown

Philo Live TV Channels, Price Changes, and Deals

Philo is a skinny bundle internet TV streaming service. This small startup streaming service started offering its low-cost channel packages in fall 2017. Since then, the service has added quite a few customers and enjoyed major investments from content providers.

Philos primary goal is to provide entertainment TV options for the lowest possible cost. As of the time of this writing, Philo provides one streaming service package: a 63 channel package for $25 per month. This has crept up slowly from $20, but it is still an affordable, competitive cable alternative.

Philos packages do not exceed those price ranges. There are also no hidden fees, and unlike most of its competitors on the market, there are a few very affordable available add-ons. That means the maximum price you will pay for Philo, at least presently, is $25 per month. No contract, you are free to cancel the subscription anytime. You can add Starz for $9/month, Epix for $6/month, and Movies & More for $3/month as add-ons.

64 Channels
  • Sony Movies

HBO and Showtime are not available on Philo.

A few of the dedicated movie channels on Philo are AMC, Paramount Network, and Lifetime Movies, as well as Hallmark Movies & Mysteries, IFC, and Sundance TV. You may find also find movies available on occasion from other networks Philo offers, such as BBC America and Comedy Central, and other cable networks.

To create a Philo account, youll have to provide an email address or phone number and also a valid payment method.

To use Philo, youll only need a stable Internet connection and a compatible device. For reference, Philo recommends a 7 Mbp/s connection for 1 HD stream, or 14 Mbp/s for multiple HD streams. You can test your Internet speed here.

After youve created your account all you have to do is install the Philo app on your device, login and youre good to go.

As part of a Philo subscription, you can also connect and stream with up to 3 different devices to the same account. If you try to add a 4th device, it will automatically disconnect the 1st device you logged in to Philo.

In terms of compatible devices, Philo supports most popular devices and operating systems:

  • All Roku devices.
  • Any PC or Mac device through your Internet browser.
  • Any Android or iOS device.

Unfortunately, Philo does not support Xbox or PlayStation consoles.

Options That Offer Live Streaming Of Local Channels

There are other live TV streaming options that offer local channels but cost considerably more than Philo. Here are several popular streaming alternatives that offer local TV channels:

Unlimited Dvr And 3 Day Saved Replays

PHILO REVIEW: The Best Live TV Streaming Deal for 2021? What You Get for $25/Month!

Perhaps one of Philos biggest strengths is its Unlimited DVR feature.

Basically, this DVR function lets you record as many shows and films as you want from all of the 60+ channels available on Philo.

For example, you can save 1,000 movies to your DVR list to watch at a later date.

To use the feature, all you have to do is click the Save button on a show or movie, and once it airs it will automatically be included in your DVR library for 30 days.

The only catch however is that recordings are only saved for a total of 30 days, after which they are automatically deleted.

Another nice feature of the DVR function is that Philo automatically saves a replay of every show or movie that aired within the last 3 days. This makes it very convenient to watch an episode or movie you missed out on.

You can see if a show or movie is automatically saved with the VOD tag on the episode or film.

You can also add these 3 day replays to your own DVR list, which essentially extends their duration for another 30 days.

Live Streaming Is Only 720p And Has Unskippable Ads

Live TV on Philo is streamed only in 720p. To be fair, this is the standard resolution that most TV channels broadcast in and is also the standard resolution for Philo competitors such as Sling TV or Hulu Live TV.

However, some competitors such as YouTube TV do have a few channels that stream in 1080p, such as NBC, CBS and Warner owned channels.

Fortunately, DVR recordings as well as all 3 day replays are streamed in 1080p. If resolution quality matters to you a lot, then you can always save a show or movie and watch it later at the higher resolution.

Another small inconvenience about Philo is that many live streamed shows and movies have unskippable ads.

Fortunately, a DVR recording lets you fast forward through ads.

While the unskippable ads sound annoying, it is in line with how other live TV streaming services do things.

YouTube TV and Hulu + Live TV have an identical policy when you cant skip ads on live TV, but can fast forward through them on shows saved to DVR.

Philo Top Channels Compared

Another limitation with Philo is the absence of local channels. This table illustrates the local networks on the various live-streaming platforms.

Philo

*in designated markets

If you want access to local channels, Hulu + Live TV and YouTube TV are your best bets since both offer most of them. An alternative solution is to buy an HD antenna, which could give you access to all the local channels, while the savings you receive with a Philo subscription will more than offset the upfront cost of the antenna itself.
