How To Connect iPhone Or iPad To Your TV: Hdmi Cable Or Airplay With Apple TV

How to Connect Your iPhone or iPad to Your TV

There are two major different ways you can connect or stream your iPhone or iPad to your TV. The easiest and cheapest way is to use AirPlay, which will allow you to enable iPhone screen mirroring. Alternatively, you can hook up your iPhone or iPad to your TV with an HDMI cable. If your TV doesnt have an HDMI port, you can use a VGR or AV adapter and cable to connect to your analog TV. But thats a fairly small pile of people, since the vast majority of TVs have HDMI ports. Which is why Im going to focus on how to connect your iPhone or iPad to your TV via AirPlay mirroring or with an HDMI cable and adapter. Regardless of what method you choose, it may take a little money to hook your iPhone up to your TV. Which is why, if you already have an Apple TV, I recommend using AirPlay mirroring to watch your iPhone or iPad on your TV. However, Ill go over both methods and what you need to hook up your iPhone or iPad to your TV below.

Change Airplay 2 Settings On Your TV

If you need to adjust some of your AirPlay 2 settings, you can do it directly on your TV. Just navigate to Settings, select General, and then select Apple AirPlay Settings.

You will find the following options:

  • AirPlay: Selecting this option will turn the AirPlay feature on and off.

  • Require Code: You have the option to require a passcode the first time you connect your iPhone, every time you connect your Apple device, or to create your own passcode. From this menu you can also select Reset Paired Devices which will clear all Apple devices from the TV’s memory.

  • Subtitles and Captioning: In this menu, you can turn captions and subtitles on or off. You also have several options to adjust the look of the captions such as font, size, and color.

  • About AirPlay: Here you can find the AirPlay version that is currently running, and see legal information about the software.

Use A Lightning Digital Av Adapter

Probably the easiest way to connect an iPad or iPhone to a TV is to buy a Lightning Digital AV Adapter from the Apple Store. At £49/$49 it’s not cheap, mind you, and you will also need to provide an HDMI cable.

This little box of tricks contains an HDMI port to plug into the TV, a Lightning connector for plugging into your iPad or iPhone, and a bonus Lightning port which gives you the option of charging your iPhone at the same time.

Using a Lightning Digital AV Adapter couldn’t be easier.

  • Plug one end of an HDMI cable into the adapter’s HDMI port, and the other into a spare HDMI port on the back of your TV.
  • Connect the adapter to the Lightning port on your iPad and iPhone.
  • Optional: Connect your charger cable to the Lightning port on the Lightning Digital AV Adapter.
  • Turn on the TV and ensure it’s set to display the video input from the HDMI socket. You will see the iPad or iPhone’s home screen appear on the television.

It may appear with lower quality and in a box shape. Don’t worry: this is just for the Home screen. Things will improve in a minute.

Start playing a video on your iPad or iPhone. Either pick a movie file from the Videos app, or play a clip from Apple TV+, Netflix, BBC iPlayer, , or any other video app. The Home screen will vanish from the TV, and the video will play in full definition. On the iPhone you will see a screen that says TV Connected.

Mirror Your Screen With A Wired Adapter

To avoid delays between your iPhone or iPad and the TV screen, consider using a wired adapter to connect your iPhone to a TV. There are a few drawbacks to wired adapters, but the latest models are better than they once were.

Most problems stem from the fact that Apple didn’t design the Lightning port on the iPhone and iPad to output video signals. As a result, you need to buy a clunky adapter to go from your Lightning connector to an HDMI or VGA connector.

The first batch of Lightning-to-HDMI adapters topped out at a resolution of 900p. And while the latest Apple Lightning-to-HDMI adapters promise 1080p, the reviews still aren’t great. Users mention frequent black screens and sudden hardware failures.

You can also get Lightning-to-VGA adapters or USB-C-to-HDMI adapters, depending on your device and TV inputs. And USB-C to HDMI adapters will currently output up to 4K HDR at 60Hz.

For the $49+ price tag, these adapters don’t provide a good value and start to make the wireless convenience of an Apple TV look well worth an extra $100. What’s more, you can only use wired adapters to mirror your device screen.

To mirror your iPhone or iPad screen to a TV using an adapter:

  • Connect your adapter to the Lightning or USB-C port on your iPhone or iPad.
  • Use an HDMI cable to connect your TV to the adapter.
  • Switch to the correct input source on your TV to see the screen mirroring from your iPhone or iPad.

Although smart TVs are very common and its not hard to carry an AirPlay receiver around, there are even more options for screen mirroring. You can even mirror your iPad to a PC or Mac using a software AirPlay receiver.

This is an application that runs on your desktop operating system and appears to the iPad as a hardware AirPlay receiver. In the past this was a useful way to record an iPad or iPhone screen, but since screen recording is now a built-in feature of iOS thats not really necessary anymore.

It is useful, though, when the only device connected to a large display is a Mac or Windows PC. These software solutions turn that computer into a makeshift receiver. The most well-known example is probably AirServer Connect.

You can also use the HDMI dongle method to connect your iPad to a computer monitor. Thats a more common situation, since most new TVs are after all smart TVs. Computer monitors are not. Just be aware that if the monitor doesnt have built in speakers youll either have to use a Bluetooth device for sound or use a dongle that also has a headphone jack in addition to HDMI.
