How To Stream Internet Video To Your TV
When I moved into my first apartment, I was faced with a lot of questions I’d never had to answer before: How do I turn on the utilities? What’s a good rate for renter’s insurance? How much do I need for a security deposit? But there was another question it seemed just about everyone was asking me:
Are you going to get cable?
Thankfully, I already knew the answer to this one: no way. Because as long as you have a high-speed Internet connection at your house, you can stream movies and TV shows online. A streaming video is simply one you watch in real time, rather than downloading an entire file to your computer. For me, streaming Internet video has a lot of advantages over traditional TV service.
For one thing, it’s usually much less expensive than a cable subscription. You’ll also have a lot more control over what you watch and when you watch it, instead of relying on TV schedules and channel lineups. Best of all , streaming video has far fewer commercials than regular TV.
Set-top streaming boxes
There are a few different ways to stream Internet video to your TV. In my opinion, the simplest solution is to purchase a set-top streaming box. These devices are easy to set up, easy to use, and much cheaper than some other Internet streaming options.
Of course, there are several set-top streaming boxes you could choose from. Here are some other good options:
Setting up a set-stop streaming box
Subscription-based video services
Free video services
Stream Video From Your iPhone iPad Or Ipod Touch To A TV
To stop streaming, tap AirPlay in the app that you’re streaming from, then tap your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from the list.
*Some video apps might not support AirPlay. If you cant use AirPlay with a video app, check the App Store on your Apple TV to see if that app is available.
Digital Stores And Other Options
Google Play Movies & TV
Streaming models are all very well, but they dont give you permanent, ongoing access to your favorite movies and shows. If the streaming model isnt for you, then you can pick from a variety of digital stores to save your own copies of these videos to your phone. With this option, you can keep your content forever, and you wont have the monthly expense of a subscription fee to worry about either.
Google Play Movies & TV : Googles digital movie and TV show store is very well stocked. As youd expect from Google, you can watch your stuff from pretty much any devicea web browser, iPhones, Android devices, smart TVs, and so on. Anything you purchase and watch will actually stream to your phone, Netflix-style, though you do have the option to cache downloads in advance if youre going to be without Wi-Fi. The mobile apps themselves are simple and streamlined, but have everything you need.
iTunes : Its hard to find fault with the choice of content on Apples digital store. After all, it was one of the very first to go online. Whether youre after a ratings-busting television show or a recently released movie, chances are youll be able to find it on iTunes. On the downside, this app is only for iPhones and iPadsyou cant watch any of your iTunes purchases on Android. Thats something to bear in mind before you decide to buy all your digital videos from Apple.

Connecting Your Phone To A TV Without Hdmi Cable
Connecting without a cable is also relatively easy and might even be cheaper, considering additional hardware is not always needed. That said, the first option does require an additional purchase of a Chromecast. This is Googles dongle device which plugs directly into the TV and allows the user to cast videos, images, and sometimes files, from apps to the big screen in the home. Although this is a Google product, it does work with iOS, so regardless of whether youre an Android phone or iPhone owner, Chromecast is a viable solution.
For a lot of people, they might even need to purchase the separate device as many smart TVs and set-top boxes now come with Chromecast support built-in. Likewise, some TVs and STBs also come with AirPlay support, making it equally as easy to send content from an iPhone, without the need for a device like Googles Chromecast.

Thats because we assume that getting them talking will be a lot more hassle than it is.
However, connecting up your TV with your smartphone or yourtablet opens up a whole range of ways to stream and cast things from your mobile device to the big screen of your TV. For example, you might want to show some old holiday photos to your friends and family, stream a YouTube clip or video file in higher resolution than your phone can handle, keep playing theNetflix show you were watching on your commute on the big screen instead or cast a workout tutorial to your TV so its easier to follow.

Reasons To Connect Your Phone Or Tablet To A TV
You can easily view your phone or tablets display on a TV by wireless means such as screen casting or using devices like Google Chromecast and others, but a USB to TV connection is beneficial in various ways.
If youre gaming and want to mirror your phone to a TV, a USB connection reduces lag that youd experience with a wireless configuration. It also comes in handy where theres no WiFi or the wireless signal is weak, which means you need a wired connection to get connected to the internet.
Alternatively, you may want to display some photos for others in the room to see, stream videos in higher resolution, or watch content on a larger screen. In this case, a USB to TV connection from your phone will help you view your files like pictures on your TV, so your phone acts as a storage device if your TV has a USB input.
If youre using a smart TV, its easy to connect to internet apps as these are built into the device. For other TVs, you can use streaming devices or set top boxes to get your favorite content up on the TV.

Streaming To The Big Screen From Smartphones & Tablets
When it comes to movie night – bigger is better.
After all – who wants to watch blockbuster movies and epic shows on a tablet or a phone screen?
You naturally want to use your mobile connection to watch on a larger TV screen, but a lot of the best options for streaming via cellular unlimited data plans are limited to “on device data” – meaning that the unlimited data is only unlimited when watching on the comparatively tiny screen o a phone or tablet.
Doing so will blow through your personal mobile hotspot data limits in a heartbeat!
A great way around this is to use your smartphone or tablet to directly feed a larger TV screen, essentially “mirroring” your device screen to the TV without using mobile hotspot data.
The overall experience may be nowhere near as nice or convenient as directly using an Apple TV, Roku, or the built-in smart TV apps, but at least you can watch all you want without running into mobile hotspot data limits by taking advantage of unlimited on-device data available on many smartphone and tablet plans.
There are several ways to do this depending on the equipment you have, and several important gotchas to be on guard against.
Tip: A lot of nomads actually dedicate a tablet or smartphone to be the streaming heart of their entertainment center, permanently wired to their TV.
Connect Using Netflix 2nd Screen
The Netflix app on your mobile device has the ability to sync to select TVs and streaming media players, allowing you to control your Netflix experience from your phone or tablet.
To use your Android mobile device as a remote:
Connect your mobile device to the same Wi-Fi network as your TV.
Launch the Netflix app on both your TV and your mobile device.
Sign in to the same Netflix account on both your TV and your mobile device.
Select the Cast icon in the upper or lower right corner of the screen.
Select the device you would like to watch your TV show or movie on.
Select a TV show or movie to watch and press Play.
If you encounter issues with 2nd Screen, see our Troubleshoot Netflix 2nd Screen article.
You can now fast forward, rewind, pause, or change the audio or subtitle settings from your mobile device.

Use Google Chromecast Ultra
If cords arent your thing, try a gadget that plugs into your TV, connects to Wi-Fi and communicates between your phone and the big screen. Googles Chromecast Ultra lets you play video in breathtaking 4k resolution. It plugs into a TVs HDMI port and connects via your existing Wi-Fi, so you can stream movies, music and games from your smartphone, tablet and other connected devices.
Method : Media Servers
Required Transmitter: PC, Mac, Android device or iOS deviceRequired Receiver: Almost any computer, mobile device, streaming player or game console
Although media servers require a few minutes to set up, theyre a much more reliable and efficient way to stream content than screen mirroring is.
Media server programs essentially turn your PC into a remote server that streams video to a receiver thats hooked up to your TV. Receivers will often optimize video streamed from media servers, regardless of the format its saved in, making it a good choice for anyone with a Wi-Fi connection thats not reliable enough for perfect screen mirroring.
Quality media server programs are a dime a dozen, especially on Windows and Android. While we cant discuss the specifics of every single program on the market, well give one free-software recommendation per system. If youre curious about other options, just search for media server on Google and see what comes your way.
No matter which system you use, I do have one recommendation: Put all of your media in a single, easy-to-find location call it something like Media,Media Server or Video Collection. Keeping everything in one place will make your media server easy to navigate, and it will keep out all of the ancillary video and audio files from elsewhere on your system.

Stream To The TV With Cables & Adapters
Possibly the easiest way to stream from iPad or iPhone is to connect a cable, but you can’t use just any cable. Because iOS devices use Apple’s proprietary Lightning connector, you need a special adapter.
Apple’s Lightning Digital AV Adapter is the first half of what you need to stream to your TV. The other half is an HDMI cable for connecting the adapter to the TV.
Once you switch the input on your TV to the HDMI port the cable is plugged into, you’ll see your iPad or iPhone on the TV. From there, you can stream apps, photos, videos, and more straight to your TV.
Connect Your Phone Or Tablet To Your TV Via Usb
There are different methods you can use to connect your mobile device to a TV via USB such as using a USB cable for Android or Lightning cable for iOS devices, Mobile High-Definition Link , or SlimPort.
Lets look at how each of these methods work to mirror your phone or tablets screen on your TV.
AndroidUsing a USB Cable
For Android devices, a USB cable can help you connect your phone or tablet to your TV, provided it has a USB port. If youre connecting to a smart TV, go to to enable file transfers, instead of just charging the phone or tablet via the TV.
This method is used when you want to view files or photos on a compatible TV as it technically transfers your files for opening on your TV.
Connect With An Adapter Or Cable
This method works when you want to mirror your screen onto your TV to transmit the display on-screen. You can use an HDMI adapter or cable to connect your phone to a TV and mirror the content on your screen.
A USB to HDMI adapter is the easiest option as you simply plug the adapter to your phone and plug the HDMI cable into it to connect to your TV and watch from your phone. Check that your phone supports HDMI Alt Mode, which lets it output video.
Some Android devices have micro or mini HDMI ports for direct connection to HDMI over a single cable, so its important to check whether your cable is compatible before connecting your devices.
