Theme Song And Opening Sequences
The series takes its title from the song of the same name, which was originally released on a hit record by The Romantics in 1980 it was written by the group’s members Wally Palmar, Mike Skill, Rich Cole, and Jimmy Marinos. A cover version of the song, performed by the Canadian all-female rock group Lillix, was used as the theme song for the show. Lillix’s cover version was also heard on the soundtrack of the 2003 remake of Freaky Friday and the soundtrack of the film 13 Going on 30. The theme was remixed into a techno/dance style theme for the second season by Philip Steir .
The pilot episode had a short opening sequence and the cast members’ names were only shown over the cold open. The first season’s opening sequence featured intercut scenes of two girls portraying younger versions of Holly and Val, with shots of Bynes and Garth sticking their tongues out at the camera, mixed with footage excerpted from the first four episodes. The opening title sequence used for the rest of the series featured the show’s cast in front of digitally inserted scenes of New York at night. Different versions of the sequence were used for SD and HD broadcasts.
Due to music costs, and rights, DVD and streaming releases replaced the theme song of Lillix’s cover of a song by the same name of the series by The Romantics. Remarking upon it when the series was added to HBO Max in January 2021 with the replacement music, TVLine called it “royalty-free garbage that not even Shazam can identify.”

What I Like About It
As someone who adored What I Like About You when it was on the air and spent years watching reruns on Freeform and Nickelodeon, I’m not afraid to say I got emotional upon learning that all 86 episodes started streaming on HBO Max in January 2021. The news is huge for early fans looking to reacquaint themselves with the show, but it’s also great for a new audience anyone in the mood for a gentle, low-stakes, comfort binge.
There’s a lot to like, and love, about What I Like About You, but the heaping dose of soul-soothing nostalgia the sitcom delivers is one of its best present-day draws. The series is like a digital time capsule filled with music, pop culture references, technology, fashion trends, and familiar faces from decades past. You’ll recognize a bunch of famous cameos including Tony Hawk, Megan Fox, Penn Badgely, Jenna Fischer, and Jesse McCartney. And if you’re a 90210 fan, brace yourself, because you’ll see Jennie Garth reunite with Ian Ziering, Luke Perry, and Jason Priestley, as well.
If you’ve ever considered yourself a fan of Amanda Bynes, What I Like About You is essential viewing.
What I Like About You is streaming on HBO Max.

Talk To Your Kids About
Families can talk about the stereotypical depiction of the female characters. Is this the norm for sitcoms? Also, Val’s relationship with Vic might prove to be a good jumping off point for a discussion about the potential consequences of getting married so quickly. Even if Val does eventually fall in love with Vic, was marrying him a wise thing for her to do? Since the show caters primarily to tween girls, families may want to relate this plot-point to Britney Spears’s impromptu wedding in Las Vegas.

Is It Any Good
Take a kooky teenage sister, send her to live with her older sister in New York City, throw in a couple more frivolous girlfriends, some romantic mishaps, some slapstick and physical comedy, and what you get is a cute, though unremarkable sitcom that tween girls will love and their parents will…well, not love, but may tolerate.
Kicking off its fourth season, What I Like About You throws new relationships into the mix. After three seasons, Holly finally gets together with her friend Vince and older sister Val must deal with the consequences of her drunken quickie wedding to former-boss-turned-fireman Vic. Later this season, Val’s quirky friend Lauren will get a love interest, and Holly’s friends Tina and Gary will become interested in each other. More comedic mix-ups and goofball antics are sure to follow.
