Hulu + Live TV also lets you record on-demand programming from Hulu’s vast library, including all of its original programs. Here’s how to do it:
How Does Hulu Work
Hulu is a bit more complicated to use than other streaming services, especially if youre subscribed to a Hulu Plus Live TV plan. Essentially though, it works the same, with a remote server that houses the content. You connect to this server on your device and start streaming.
No matter which plan you choose, you will have to answer a few questions before you can start streaming the first time. This is largely to see what kind of content youre interested in for recommendations, and it can be skipped if you want to start streaming even sooner.
If youre a Hulu Plus Live TV subscriber, you have to set up a Home network to access local TV channels. You can only have one Home network, but you can change it up to four times a year for free. You will not be able to stream TV stations on non-mobile devices while away from your Home network.
For the streaming services to work smoothly, you will also need a solid internet connection. Here are the recommended internet speeds for Hulu:
- 3.0 Mbps Recommended speed for standard streaming.
- 8.0 Mbps Recommended speed for live TV streaming.
- 16.0 Mbps Recommended speed for UHD streaming.

Is Directv Stream A Viable Challenger To Hulu + Live TV Our Experts Put Them To The Live Streaming Test
Cloud DVR storage: 20 hrs.
Hulu + Live TV is both a live TV and on-demand TV streaming service, as the name suggests. In addition to over 70 live TV channels, it also gives you access to Hulus large library of on-demand TV shows, movies, and original series. Hulu + Live TV was also the first streaming service to employ a + in its name, if blame needs to be placed.
DIRECTV STREAM, formerly known as AT& T TV, is the internet-streaming sibling of DIRECTV satellite TV service. It features similar plans and channel counts to the satellite service, as well as more expensive pricing than most other live TV streaming services.
TL DR: We prefer Hulu + Live over DIRECTV STREAM in this matchup, because we think you get more for your money with it. But, if you like fat channel counts , DIRECTV STREAM might be worth it for you.
How Much Does Hulu Cost
The traditional Hulu streaming service provides a subscriber ad-supported tier for $7 per month and an ad-free version for $13 per month . Hulu With Live TV is $70 per month and currently comes with Disney+ and ESPN+.
This includes the ad-supported streaming option, 50 hours of cloud DVR storage, and the ability to watch on two screens concurrently. Add another $6 for the premium ad-free tier if youd prefer to go without continual nagging to buy something. Hulu is a Disney property, and Disney offers a special deal in which you can bundle all of its streaming services Hulu, Disney+, and ESPN+ and pay just $14 per month. Thats $6 less than you would pay if you got them all individually.

How Hulu + Live TV’s Dvr Works
You may know Hulu as a paid video streaming service that offers next-day access to a ton of current TV programs. In addition to this subscription-based on-demand streaming, Hulu also offers Hulu + Live TV, which provides live programming from a variety of broadcast and cable news, entertainment, and sports channels in addition to Hulu’s standard on-demand fare.
Hulu + Live TV presents live channels in a traditional scrolling program guide. From here, you can choose to view a current live program or opt to record a current or future program for later viewing.
Hulu offers two Live TV plans: Basic and No Ads. Both plans now offer free DVR functionality with unlimited storage for your recorded programs. That means you can record as many programs as you like, with no limits on number or size.
You can choose to record any program you’re currently watching live, as well as upcoming programs and Hulu’s on-demand programming. Any program you record is saved in the cloud for nine months, which means you don’t have to devote any storage space on your devices for the programs you record.
You play your recorded programs through your regular viewing device . You just need to be connected to the Internet since nothing is stored locally.
Hulu stores all the programs you record for nine months unless you choose to delete them before that time. After nine months, Hulu deletes a program from your personal storage to make room for new recordings.

Hulu + Live TV Platform Support
Hulu + Live TV has apps for every major streaming platform, including Roku, Fire TV, Android TV, and Apple TV. It worked well for me on iOS and Android mobile devices, and its also at home in a browser running on a desktop or laptop computer. Youll need an up-to-date version of Hulus app to run the live TV features, but thats almost definitely not going to be a problem: Hulu has its latest app working on virtually every platform. Hulu even works on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X.
I tested Hulu + Live TV on Firefox, Chrome, iOS, Android, Roku, Fire TV, and Chromecast. I found the apps to be very consistent, and I think youll have a good experience no matter which platform you prefer.
Hulu With Live TV Review: Bottom Line
Hulu with Live TV is a serious contender worth considering. The streaming services redesigned interface is gorgeous and pretty easy to navigate. You get plenty of interesting channels for a reasonable price. You get access to Hulus robust streaming library, and that unlimited DVR is nothing to scoff at.
While these arent negligible concerns, they dont take away too much from what is ultimately a very solid effort on Hulus part. As our Hulu with Live TV review has shown, the service is a top contender for your dollar, as its original shows are unmatched by Sling, YouTube TV and the rest.

We’ll also answer frequently asked questions like, “how can I find a list of channels on Hulu for my area?” and “how do I sign up for Hulu + Live TV?”
How Hulu With Live TV Works
The pricing scheme seems pretty competitive for everything Hulu with Live TV offers, but thats a moot point if the service isnt very good.
And heres the thing: Hulu with Live TV is justnot very good. But its not that the streaming quality is badits the interface. It is positively the worst streaming interface Ive ever personally seen or been forced to used. Its awful.
What makes it so bad? First off, its completely nonintuitivetrying to find your Live TV channels is just confusing. Theyre housed under a My Channels tab in the primary Hulu interface, which doesnt indicate that this is live TV at all .
This is a vertical list of channels, and the name My Channels suggests that its a list of favorite channels. But it never offered an option for me to choose my favorites, so it just threw every single channel into this list. That is objectively the worst possible way to handle a favorites list, if thats even what this is, which is never made clear.
To get to everything thats on, you have to scroll all the way to the bottom of said stupid list and click the More Networks option. This then shows everything thats on right that second.
And thats all you get: no grid view, no channel lineup view, no option to see whats coming on later. Just whats on right nowat least in this part of the interface.
Note: On some devices, like Fire TV, you can click the menu button on the Live view to jump straight to that channels guide.
