Best 4K TVs you can buy in 2020

LG have created an “Extreme Home Cinema”, a modular TV screen that can be installed at between 108 inches and 325 inches if you’ve got enough space in your mansion. It could cost more than £100,000

LG has unveiled the world’s largest TV a 325-inch monster screen that will set you back tens of thousands of pounds.

Aimed at “super-luxury” homes, the Extreme Home Cinema is one of the largest LED screens ever made.

It uses Direct View LED technology to deliver a cinema-sized screen at the ultra-HD resolution of an 8K television.

The screen is so big that it lets you watch multiple TV channels at once. Photographs of the TV suggest you could watch up to 20 channels at the same time using what LG calls its UltraStretch feature.

If you don’t have a 26 foot high wall in your sprawling mansion or if you don’t have a sprawling mansion the Extreme Home Cinema scales down to a petite 108 inches, roughly the height of an upright grizzly bear.

“From 2K to 8K configurations with screen sizes from 108″ to a show stopping 325″, these solutions come with virtually everything you need, except the popcorn”, LG said on its website.

LG hasn’t listed prices for the Extreme Home Cinema, as each system is custom-made and fitted.

However, it estimates that the warranty, support, installation, and biannual “health checks” will cost around $30,000, or roughly £21,000. If it’s anything like LG’s rollable OLED TV, it could cost upwards of $100,000.

Resolution Vs Refresh Rate

These days, a 4K resolution screen is most suitable, especially if you stream content from services like Netflix and/or will be connecting a gaming console to your TV, as many of the latest shows support 4K UHD resolution. As for refresh rate, go with the highest you can find . This is a measure of how many times the screen refreshes the picture per second. Ideally, you want a 4K resolution TV with a 120Hz refresh rate, as it can make games and sports look much smoother.

If you buy a TV with 720p or 1080p resolution, youll soon find yourself at a disadvantage and needing to upgrade your TV much sooner, though a small 1080p screen can be good as a secondary display in a kitchen or bathroom. If you want to plan ahead for your future viewing needs, the latest 8K resolution TVs will serve you well, but right now, youll pay a premium for this feature.

What Are Smart TVs

Smart TVs are TVs that give you a heap of extra tech, extra features and an overall better viewing experience. A Smart TV allows you to:

  • Connect to the internet. Watch your favourite streaming apps, YouTube, or search the web.
  • Manage your smart home. Use your TV with your other Connected Home devices.
  • Buy a big brand. All the big brands have quality Smart TVs to choose from.
  • Connect your devices. Some Smart TVs have built-in Chromecast so you can link your phone, tablet or laptop.

How Close Should You Sit To A 4k TV

Whats On TV England Magazine Subscription

The suggested viewing distances in the tool above are based on high-definition televisions, but many now come with 4K ultra HD screens, meaning you can sit that little bit closer. Pictures on these TVs can have four times the detail of a Full HD set, but you really need to go 40-inch or larger to appreciate the jump in picture quality.

So if you’re expecting to watch 4K content, don’t be afraid to opt for sets at the upper end of the scale shown above – or even a bit higher. For example, with a 40-inch 4K TV, 7 feet should be a comfortable distance.

Ultimately, though, how close you sit to your TV – whether it’s a HD or 4K model – is down to your own personal preference and the way you’ve set up your living room.

Best For 8k Early Adopters

The TV market has been changing a lot recently, both in terms of technology and price. New types of screens with organic light-emitting diode panels and ultra-high definition is replacing the 1080p standard we’ve become used to. But which one should you buy? Here are the main points to consider when shopping for a new set, as well as the best TVs we’ve tested.

What’s The Difference Between Oled And Led

Plasma TVs were the only flat-panel models available when they were first introduced more than a decade ago. They’re now a dead category, and you won’t see a major television manufacturer offering a new plasma television any time soon. That means your choices will mostly consist of LED-backlit LCD TVs , as well as much less common, much more expensive OLED displays.

First, a note: LCD and LED TVs have been generally considered separate, despite both using LCD panels. LCD panels themselves aren’t lit, so they need to be illuminated. LED TVs simply backlight the LCDs with LEDs, while LCD TVs use CCFL for backlighting. CCFL-backlit designs have fallen by the wayside, and nearly every LCD television out there right now is lit by LEDs.

OLED displays are a rare and very expensive technology for TVs, and despite their name are drastically different from LED-backlit televisions. In fact, they’re closer to plasma screens in how they work. Each diode generates both color and light, like in plasma screens, but they can be much smaller and thinner than even LED-lit panels, and can produce some of the best black levels possible. Currently, LG and Sony are the only television manufacturers that offer OLED models, and they remain pricey, though Vizio has recently entered the fray with some relatively affordable models .

What Should You Be Aware Of When It Comes To Viewing Angles For Your TV

If you want to enjoy your TV from a variety of viewing positions, youll need a TV with wide viewing angles. Of the two main LCD panel types , IPS panels offer the greatest viewing angles. However, this can sometimes come at the cost of worse contrast. Only OLED TVs can offer both excellent contrast and viewing angles, but their image quality might degrade in very bright rooms.

Are Cheap TVs Worth The Price

The TV Buying Guide 2021 – What You Need to Know! | The Tech Chap

Budget-priced TVs can be very appealing, especially if you haven’t yet made the jump to 4K and are daunted by $1,000-plus price tags. Be careful when you see a great deal on a TV, though, even if it says 4K HDR. It could be a steal, or it could be a disappointment.

Performance among budget TVs varies wildly, and trends toward the mediocre. You’ll find a few very good deals, like the TCL 6-series that manages to combine excellent picture quality with a low price. You’ll also find a sea of cheap TVs that don’t measure up.

Don’t count on big names to be reliably high-quality in their budget lines, either. While companies like LG, Samsung, and Sony can make some incredible flagship TVs, their inexpensive models generally aren’t any better than baseline models from more budget-centric brands like Element, Hisense, and TCLâand they’re usually a bit more expensive. As always, our reviews can help you find a screen that doesn’t trade quality for price.

Do The Best TVs Need 4k Resolution

4K resolution, at least the way most TV companies define it, is 3840 x 2160 pixels, or 2160p. To put that in perspective, a Full HD 1080p image is only 1920 x 1080. 4K screens have about 8 million pixels, which is around four times what a 1080p set can display.

You find any less than 4K resolution on this best TV guide, though you might see the odd 8K TV, which packs in 33 million pixels instead for even greater detail usually at an even greater price.

Adding A Sound System

TVs have built-in speakers that function well enough in the sense that you can understand dialogue, but beyond that they’re typically pretty underwhelming. With few exceptions, you can improve your movie and gaming experience greatly by getting an add-on speaker system, like a soundbar or a dedicated multi-channel home theater system.

If space is at a premium or your budget is limited, a soundbar is your best bet. Soundbars are long, thin, self-contained speakers that sit under or over your TV. Small and simple to set up, they’re less expensive than multi-speaker systems. Soundbars generally don’t separate the channels enough to accurately place sound effects, but they’ve become quite good at producing a large sound field around you. Here are some of our favorite soundbars.

LGs latest flagship TV is able to roll away into a small box when youre not using it. Its probably the most sci-fi-looking thing youll see from CES that actually has a use in real life.

First shown off as a prototype from LG Display at CES 2018, the rollable TV will actually be released in 2019, although the company is keeping quiet on exactly how much it will cost.

Thats a shame because the idea of a 65-inch TV that can compact itself down into a box the size of a TV cabinet is incredibly tempting. When its not in full-size TV mode, the screen can also be partially retracted to hide the black bars at the top and bottom of any content with a 21:9 cinematic aspect ratio, or it can rise up just a little bit to show smart TV notifications.

How Big A TV Should I Get

In my opinion bigger is better, and your money is best spent on large screen sizes rather than a slight upgrade in image quality. The answer also depends on room size and seating distance: If you have a big room and sit further away, you’ll want a bigger TV. The answer also depends on room size and seating distance.

Which TV Brand Lasts The Longest

As long as you buy one of the recognized big name TV brands, the longevity of your TV is more dependent on the model and technology inside it than the brand. Most modern OLED TVs are rated for around 30,000 hours, which is enough to let you watch three hours of TV every day for more than 27 years. LCD TVs can be rated for anywhere between 30,000 and 60,000 hours, so you’ll likely to buy a new TV before the one you choose stops working.

If you buy a brand that uses poor quality components or comes with a very limited warranty then you may find that your TV doesn’t last that long. Sticking with an established brand and focusing on a better model will guarantee that your TV lasts for many years to come.

Tips For Testing TV Picture Quality

While Ive described the features you should look for in a TV, as I said before, image quality is the biggest part of the equation, and that you largely judge with your eyes. That said, there are some handy, cheap, color- and brightness-measuring apps for smartphones these days. Even if theyre not 100-percent accurate, you can compare the results to spot differences.

The questions you should be asking yourself when you judge are:

  • How accurate is the color? Are reds orangish? Is there too much yellow in the green?
  • Is there good contrast between light and dark when next to each other?
  • Do details in dark areas stand out?
  • Are the blacks black, or charcoal gray?
  • How bright are the brightest spots?
  • Is there banding in subtle color transitions, such as sky shots?
  • Is there bleeding from the backlight in dark areas?
  • Is there blooming around bright objects on dark backgrounds?
  • Are motion scenes jerky?
  • While being panned or moved, do detailed areas shimmer or create ugly patterns?
  • Are there cloudy areas on a white screen?

Im sorry to say it, but even the best TVs will have issuesjust fewer of them and less severe. The closest Ive seen to perfect processing came courtesy of Samsungs Q900 8K UHD smart TV. As Ive already said, having all those extra pixels and subpixels to play with apparently helps.

For your convenience, weve placed several screens for you to download below .

Use pure red, green, and blue to test color accuracy.
