Apple TV is an easy-to-use device. The ability to purchase content by pressing a few buttons on the remote makes it much easier to use. Imagine if you have to type in your Apple ID every time you purchase something on Apple TV? Unfortunately, this also makes it easy for anyone who lives in your house to buy content on your Apple TV, using your Apple ID account. Furthermore, young children can access just about anything on Apple TV. If other people have access to your Apple TV, setting up Restrictions is essential. Restrictions will allow you to set up a simple 4-digit passcode to authorize purchases and access mature content. It is also possible to hide content for sale, displaying only content that you own and disabling all purchases.

How To Set A Time Limit For My Kids

Adding an iPhone app limit for your children is almost the same process as described above. The only difference is on the homepage of Screen Time, scroll down to see the Family section. Tap on the child you want to add iPhone app limits for, and then you will see a nearly-identical set of screens with data for your child. You can then set an app limit by following the same steps above.

For a child, when their time is up with an app, they cannot simply press Ignore Limit. Instead, they can request extra time. If requested, an alert pops up on the parent devices asking to allow the additional time. This request can be granted or denied.

Note: All Screen Time features for families require Family Sharing to be set up.

    Set Content And Privacy Restrictions

If you want to allow or disallow specific content, privacy settings, or any other changes, you can do that by tapping Content & Privacy Restrictions from the main Screen Time menu. Turn on the switch next to Content & Privacy Restrictions to proceed.

Tap iTunes & App Store Purchases to allow or disallow the installing or deleting of apps, as well as any in-app purchases. You can also require a password to make in-app purchases on an app you’ve already downloaded.

To enable or disable specific apps from the Content & Privacy Restrictions screen, tap on Allowed Apps and toggle apps on or off. If you want to allow or ban specific content from the App Store, the web, and other sources, go back to the Content & Privacy Restrictions screen, select Content Restrictions and pick what you’d like to allow or block.

To limit the data thats shared from certain apps, you can control your settings at the Content & Privacy Restrictions screen in the Privacy section. Tap each entry to allow or disallow it.

Once you make changes on the Content & Privacy Restrictions, those changes must be approved before they go into effect. In the Allow changes section, tap each change to allow or disallow it, and you’re done.

What To Do After Screen Time Is Turned On

Use Screen Time on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

After turning on Screen Time, you’ll immediately see a graph tracking how much time you spend in an app or on a website. Tap on See All Activity for a breakdown of the current day, the past seven days, which apps you spent your time in, the number of times you pick up your phone each day and how many notifications you receive — and from which apps. Every Sunday you will receive an alert with your stats and trends.

Below the activity graph, there are several different categories within Screen Time that you can tailor to meet your personal goals, or help curb your child’s device usage. Here’s a quick breakdown of what each one does:

Take a few minutes to go through the various categories, adjusting settings and getting an idea for what each one does.

Downtime: When turned on, only the apps listed in Always Allowed and phone calls will be accessible. Create a custom schedule to turn on Downtime close to bedtime, for example, so you can begin to disconnect and unwind.

App Limits: Set daily time limits for specific apps or app categories. Once the time limit is reached, the app will show a splash screen letting you know your time limit has been reached. Don’t worry, you can override the limit or your child can send a request for more time if more time is needed.

Communication Limits: You can control who your child talks to and for how long, on a daily basis. This setting applies to Phone, FaceTime, Messages and iCloud contacts.

Parental Control is one of the first things you would want to set up on any device if you have kids at home. The same is the case with your Apple TV. It is because children can access explicit content from the apps on their devices. The term Parental Controls on an Apple TV is referred to as Restrictions. Irrespective of the generation of Apple TV you own, setting up the restrictions is similar. In other words, you can password protect Apple TV. You need to make sure that you need the latest software on Apple TV. So, let us find out the same in detail in the section below.

    What Screen Time Parents Say

    • I NEVER buy apps but this one is completely worth it. I can easily monitor/control my son’s phone AND tablet.

      Roger N

    • Thank you for creating an app that removes me from the role of constant enforcer in our home. For example, we let our daughter choose the screen time limits with us yesterday, according to the values we have all been trying to adhere to as a family. And last night, she peacefully reached her daily limit. No pleading, no reminding, no guilt.

      Andrea Brinkert, Mum of two

    • Love this app! With Screen Time I can control when, how long the tablet is used, and what apps are allowed and not allowed. One of my favourite aspects of this app is that I can create tasks that give them more time when the tasks are completed. It’s easy to use, and helps limit their screen time!

How Does The App Limit Work

With an iPhone time limit active, the operating system will count in the background how long you are using the app. For apps like YouTube, time is counted when you use the YouTube website in Safari or the YouTube app.

When the limit is reached, the home screen will be greyed out. Attempting to use the app will display a full-screen overlay that says your Time Limit has been reached. You cannot use the app when this panel is visible.

As an individual, you can press the Ignore Limit button if you want to give yourself some extra time obviously this feature needs some self-restraint. You can disable the time limit for today, or add an extra 15 minutes if you just need to finish something you were doing.

Dont Be Overwhelmed By The Thought Of Setting Up Restrictions It Can Be A Great Conversation Starter And A First Step To Helping Your Child Have Healthy Online Habits

Over the next several weeks, this column will focus on the basics of setting up filters on different aspects of technology. Look forward to information on streaming, gaming and social media, but first, details on the initial step to take toward internet safety.

According to Statista, more people in the U.S. are using iPhones than Android phones. If youre one of them, know there are powerful tools built right in to iOS products to help guide your childs digital life. Google has an app for Android phones that has many of the same features, but not as robust.

Before doing anything, have a conversation with your kids about why these filters are important. Its best to have them buy in before setting up restrictions so its more cooperative rather than dictatorial.

For years, my method of limiting screen time was to require my kids to bring their phones into my bedroom before they went to sleep. They would whine that they only wanted to use their phones as alarm clocks, but I didnt want the temptation of tech in their rooms all night. It was a frequent battle.

But when Apple released Screen Time, I felt relief knowing I could decide what functionality would remain on their phones during specific times. Plus, it has a lot of other helpful features too.

First, make sure you are using Family Sharing. Set that up by tapping your profile in Settings and following the prompts.

    Now for Android users.
