Connect Apple TV To Av Or Rca TV

So you have a really old TV that only has RCA or AV ports, the colour-coded ports.

To connect an Apple TV to a TV that only has RCA ports youll need an HDMI to RCA active converter. Much like the HDMI to VGA adapters, these need to be powered by an external source, which is usually a USB cable.

Heres one HDMI to RCA converter that should work with the Apple TV. To connect the adapter, connect the RCA cables to the appropriate ports and matching ones on the rear of your TV panel, connect the USB power cable to the adapter, and finally connect the Apple TV to the HDMI input.

Most of these adapters can upscale to 1080P, but wont support any resolutions or refresh rates higher than that. The audio is extracted by the RCA cables, so theres no need for other audio connections.

Long Hdmi Cables Are Ineffective

You might be hoping to use an HDMI splitter to connect your Apple TV to multiple TV screens throughout your house. To do this, youll need to run long HDMI cables from the splitter to each of your TVs.

However, HDMI cables typically max out at around 10 meters, after which the signal becomes too weak and starts to drop out before reaching the TV. Due to the nature of digital signals, when the signal gets weak it stops working altogether, rather than going fuzzy like old analog TV signals used to do.

Its unlikely that 10 meters is long enough to thread the HDMI cables to all the different rooms you want it to reach. You might be able to fix this by chaining your signal through more amplifiers, but it starts to get incredibly expensive when you do so.

Setting Up Remote Control On Ios Control Center

You need a remote control to operate the Apple TV. There is no going around this fact, as there arent any actual physical buttons on the TV itself. The most you can do would be to turn it on or off by unplugging the device then plugging it back, but thats hardly useful. Fortunately, Apple has a solution, though youll need another iOS device and an Ethernet cable for this.

If youve previously connected your iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad to your Apple TV and have the latest update, then the Remote Control app is already on your device. If you havent set up the Apple TV, or have an old version of the iPadOS or iOS, then you can set this up by following these steps:

  • Open your devices settings.
  • Tap on Control Center.
  • Tap on Customize Controls, then tap + on the Apple TV Remote.
  • With the Remote Control now set up on your device, youll need to connect your Apple TV to the same network that your iOS device is in. This is done by plugging the Ethernet cable to the back of your Apple TV, then connecting that to your Wi-Fi router. Once the device is in the network, do the following:

  • Open your devices control center. If you have an iPhone X or later, or have an iPad that has been updated to the latest version of the OS, this is done by swiping down from the upper right of your screen. Otherwise, swipe up from anywhere below the screen.
  • Find the Apple TV Remote Icon then tap on it.
  • Find your Apple TV or the name if your Smart TV from the list and tap on it.
  • Navigate to Network.
  • Configure A Universal Remote
