Application Process For History Channels Alone
At the beginning of each episode, theres a disclaimer that the persons featured are trained survival experts, so if youre a total newbie, you might not be approved.
For a contestants choice, the casting department reviews tons of applications, and they look for the ones whose profile stands out in the fierce competition.
On the History Channels website, applying to be on Alone is a fairly straightforward process via a dedicated email address.
Start by sending an email to alonecasting@itv.com with your name, age, contact information, location, and a description of your survival expertise and experience in the wild.
Survival skill includes more than just physical endurance, as mental strength is equally important for surviving the wildernesss extremely physical and psychological conditions.
There Is Regular Medical Oversight
Naturally, the show doesn’t want any fatalities on the show, so they set out to make the conditions as challenging as possible while still being safe – at least from death, though certainly not from significant illnesses or injuries. Contestants are checked by medical professionals at regular intervals with more frequent checks as the days go on. Medics will remove a contestant from the competition if they are truly in danger.
What Is It Like Competing On Alone
Many outdoorsmen, scientists, hunters, and nature-oriented professionals have competed on the show, but several notable contestants have come from unlikely lines of work, so anyone could have a chance to be part of the show.
The producers of Alone choose twenty prospective participants to attend a boot camp after reviewing the voluminous number of applications submitted before to each season. There is no “sneak preview” for candidates, and the boot camp is not filmed in the same location as the next season.
Instead, twenty candidates are put through a series of challenges and tests by paid survival experts who will assess each contestant’s physical and mental strengths and limitations in a remote, “wild” setting. The remaining ten contestants advance to the show after evaluations, with half of the possible contestants being eliminated.
As with any reality show, viewers wonder how real Alone really is questioning how isolated contestants actually are, and if the show is staged as opposed to contestants being left to their own devices. The short answer is yes there is no actual assistance provided to contestants competing on Alone.
Each contender is responsible for gathering food, generating fire, and constructing shelters. To help them stay ahead of the race and for emergencies, they are given satellite phones. That being said, The History Channel markets the show as being much more isolated than it actually is.

Some Of The Biggest Moments May Not Be Shown
Many former contestants have voiced their slight dissatisfaction with some of the footage that editors chose to cut. Contestants see the final cut of the show at the same time as the general public, so it must make for a total buzz-kill when a big moment they filmed isn’t included. While Alone is a competition series with a great rewatch value, contestants felt differently.
For instance, contestant Sam Larson told More Than Just Surviving that “there are a lot of things that I wish would have made the cut. I went on a multi-day fishing trip where I walked about a mile upriver to catch the spawning salmon. I found them, got one, and lived off of it for a few days. I remember being so proud of that salmon.”
What Really Influences The Tap
Medical checks are serious considerations on the show, even though theyre very rarely shown, aside from indicating how much weight someone has lost since beginning their adventure as a tidbit for viewers, it is a deciding factor on whether or not people are tapping out. Executive Producer Shawn Witt has said, When we set out to make this show, it was always about everyones safety first and the show second, he said. We dont ever want to be in a situation where theres a headline that says somebody died or almost died on our show. It doesnt make sense for us it doesnt make sense for the network. Witt admits that if a contestant says they arent feeling well, they check in on them more often, but to keep things fair they check in as frequently with other contestants who might not need it.

The Popular History Channel Show Concluded Its Ninth Season Last Week

The popular extreme survival show Alone wrapped up its ninth season last week and fans are already itching for more.
Driving the news: While there hasnt been official word of Season 10s confirmation or release date, two spinoff shows have been announced: Alone: The Skills Challenge and Alone: Frozen.
- The Skills Challenge, which premiered Aug. 4, focuses on three former Alone participants as they compete in build challenges, devised by another former participant, to develop shelter in the wilderness, Variety reported.
- Frozen, which premieres Thursday, Aug. 11, follows six former Alone contestants as they try to survive 50 days in the harsh winter of Labrador, Canada. Winners will split a $500,000 cash prize, per Variety.
What theyre saying: According to the New York Daily Gazette, fans have been speculating that if Season 10 were to follow past production schedules, filming would have started just after the Season 9 finale.
- This means the next season would not be available on streaming platforms for at least another year, matching up with past episode timelines.
The Real Story About Food
Much of the drama is created by hunger. Contestants often appear to be absolutely starving with feast or famine scenarios responsible for many calls from the brick phone to tap out and go home. Season one champion Allan Kay says that, while on the show, I had a multifaceted diet. During my stay on the island, I ate various species of fish, mussels, limpets, bull kelp, bladderwrack, sea lettuce, crabs, slugs, the inner bark and needles of the western hemlock tree, and ducks. When asked about food-related problems, Allan admits he had a few and would do things a little differently if he could, saying, I would have trapped in the woods more, not just in the intertidal zone. I also wish I had dug clams. This shows he wasnt quite as hungry as we were often led to believe.

Contestants Are Not As Far Away From Civilization As Viewers Think
According to numerous savvy viewers, Alone’s contestants are sometimes sent to destinations that are fairly close to civilization. For instance, The Wood Trekker blog pointed out, in one season, every contestant was an hour’s walk from a road or town.
Potential contestants can take this in several ways. They may find it comforting that civilization is so close by, or they might be annoyed that the remoteness of the experience is somewhat ‘artificial,’ creating a fake reality show. Turning Up The Heat On Alones Contestants
For the first nine seasons of Alone, contestants were forced to brave the cold. In season ten, is it possible that the show’s creators will throw a curveball at the competitors and instead leave them alone in an extremely hot location? The issues associated with scorching heat have been explored on other survival television shows before, such as the Discovery Channel’s Naked and Afraid.

Cold weather has long proven to be a formidable opponent for the competitors on Alone. The show generally starts in the months preceding winter. The struggles associated with the rapidly encroaching cold, like building an airtight and waterproof shelter, gathering supplies to maintain a fire, and stocking up on food, make for excellent entertainment. However, the heat would present a whole new host of potential problems for future Alone competitors. High temperatures increase the threat of dehydration, survivalists would have to be wary of prolonged sun exposure, and areas with warmer climates, especially humid ones, have much larger insect populations.
Finding food is one of the biggest challenges on Alone, and starvation is one most common reasons competitors need to tap out. In a hot and humid climate, food storage will rot at a much faster rate. While food would be easier to come by in a location without a harsh winter season, this inevitable decay would compensate for the more readily available sources of sustenance.

The Physical Toll Is No Joke
Many contestants have lost a staggering amount of weight, as much as 80 pounds for one man, or come dangerously close to organ failure. Others have tapped out due to food poisoning, impacted bowels, hypothermia – even cutting an arm or a tendon with an ax. Even without death on the table, these physical demands are no joke.

Analyzing The History Channels Hit Show Alone
Alone is a reality television survival show where contestants are sent to isolated locations in the wilderness to see who can last longest living alone, exposed to the elements and separated from society. Its a show about strategy. Its a show about the beauty and power of nature. Its a show about the ingenuity and resilience of mankind. Its also a show about human fragility, nutrition, and hunger.
Mostly, it ends up being a show about hunger.
But its a hunger that is more than literal. What the show wants to talk about is a question of the viability of the American socio-economic project. Is the American social experience capable of providing sustenance to the average person? Is there enough nutrition in the daily grind to keep a person going?
Alone does not directly answer these questions. It does, however, choose its contestants from a relatively narrow pool of seekers and discontents that make the question hard to avoid, even if its also hard to pin down. Then it gives them a chance to achieve the American dream by vaulting into the upper middle class with a big cash prize .
These survivalists have not thrived in American society. In one way or another, they have been pushed to the margins.
Are they trying to find their way into the center by winning a small fortune? Its telling that none of them say they want to use the money to establish a profitable working farm or a even sustainable home off the grid

Some Big Wins Were Never Shown
Drama is what keeps us watching. Sometimes its worth the story to show a big win, but other times its not. Viewers enjoy the ups and downs of the fish that got away or the fish that was stolen by a bear far more than watching someone thrive and survive off the land. Finalist Sam says, There are a lot of things that I wish would have made the cut. I went on a multi-day fishing trip where I walked about a mile upriver to catch the spawning salmon. I found them, got one, and lived off of it for a few days. I remember being so proud of that salmon, and the effort I made to get it. Lots of other things as well, but the fishing trip was the big thing.

It’s wild enough that the contestants have to survive out there in these extreme conditions – they actually have to be their own camera crew too! While turning the camera onto yourself while you’re retching from eating something poisonous is probably the last thing you’d want to do, contestants are asked to do just that in order to document every part of their experience as realistically as possible.

Items That Aren’t Allowed
Some of the show’s detractors have poked fun at Alone for the considerable number of tools and utilities that contestants are allowed to take on the show. It is worth noting how difficult the depicted experiences are, regardless of the tools, and that many of the allowed items are administered purely for safety precautions.
Some of the BTS secrets about one of History Channel’s best shows is that there is a list of approx. 30 items that aren’t allowed on the show, such as sunscreen, ChapStick, beauty products, decoys, and mosquito repellant.

The Psychological Stress Is All Real
As you can imagine, these conditions bring people to their physical, mental and emotional edge, and then go beyond it. Viewers can witness the contestants’ psychological states deteriorating the longer the show goes on and diehard fans will be able to spot the early telltale signs that a contestant is coming apart at the seams. An accident or an event, such as an injury or a storm, might be a catalyst for an already-weakened contestant calling it quits.
General Rules In All Seasons
Contestants are dropped off in a remote wilderness area, far enough apart to ensure that they will not come in contact with one another. The process begins in mid- to late autumn this adds time pressure to the survival experience as the approaching winter causes temperatures to drop and food to become scarce. Although terrains may differ in each contestant’s location, the drop-off zones are assessed in advance to ensure a similar distribution of local resources is available to each contestant.
Contestants each select 10 items of survival gear from a pre-approved list of 40, and are issued a kit of standard equipment, clothing and first aid/emergency supplies. They are also given a set of cameras to document their daily experiences and emotions. Attempting to live in the wild for as long as possible, the contestants must find food, build shelters, and endure deep isolation, physical deprivation and psychological stress.
Contestants who wish to withdraw from the competition for any reason may signal a rescue crew using a provided satellite telephone. In addition, medical professionals conduct periodic health checks on the contestants and may, at their discretion, disqualify and evacuate anyone they feel is unable to continue participating safely. The last remaining contestant wins a $500,000 cash prize. Contestants are warned that the show might last for up to a year.

They’re Not That Alone
The show works hard to push the perception that all of the contestants are completely isolated, miles and miles away from any sign of civilization. It turns out they’re actually usually not far from human life, with most being within an hour’s walk of a town, roadway, or campsite. To be fair, if they’re not accessing these resources, it doesn’t really matter how far away they are from civilization, right?
