Sling TV For Apple TV Adds Free Local Channels Support With Airtv 2 Network Tuner
If youre a Sling TV user with an Apple TV, a new update to the service today brings deep integration with AirTV 2 network tuners and local channels. With this update, Apple TV users can now access local channels in the Sling TV channel guide.
For those unfamiliar, the AirTV 2 is a network tuner that connects an HD antenna with your home Wi-Fi network, allowing you to stream local channels such as ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, and PBS through network-connected devices. Previously, the integration worked between set-top boxes such as Fire TV and Roku. Todays update brings a similar level of integration to Apple TV users.
Once you have an AirTV 2 connected to an HD antenna, youll now be able to access live local channels through the Sling TV app on Apple TV. Furthermore, users can also watch via the Sling TV app on iPhone and iPad, and there is support for recording local channels with an external hard drive. Those recordings can then be managed alongside other Sling TV Cloud DVR recordings.
To recap, what you get with the AirTV 2 and todays update is support for viewing local channels such as ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, and PBS, directly through the Sling TV app on Apple TV. This means the local channels appear alongside the rest of your Sling TV package or completely by themselves if you arent a subscriber. If youre looking to cut the cord completely, this is an intriguing option for Apple TV users.

If you are looking for a way to both cut the cord and beat the pricing from YouTube TV or Hulu + Live TV, picking one of Sling TVs packages may be your best cost-saving move.
Sling touts three major packages, and theyre all cheaper than many of the top players in this space:
- Sling Blue
- Sling Orange
- Sling Orange + Blue
You can purchase either Blue or Orange as a standalone product for $35 per month. If youd like the benefits of both, you can buy the combination package for $50 per month.
That pricing has caught the attention of money expert Clark Howard. Its $15-$30 per month cheaper than its top live TV streaming competitors, which have settled into the $65 per month range.
Sling TV offers a comparative advantage in pricing over YouTube TV or Hulu + Live TV, particularly if youre good with just the Orange or the Blue package, Clark says. It would save you quite a bit of money over the course of a year.
Clark is not currently a Sling TV subscriber, but he says he would seriously consider it as a cost-saving measure if not for the other members of his family: They strongly prefer the functionality of YouTube TV.
Ill take a closer look at the differences in the channel menu for each of the Sling TV packages later in this article.

Can I Watch Sling TV On Multiple Devices At The Same Time
This is an area in which Sling TVs varying packages can be confusing.
The number of screens you can stream on simultaneously depends upon which Sling TV package you have.
Sling Orange customers can stream on just one device at a time. Sling Blue customers can stream on three devices simultaneously.
If you pay up for the Sling Orange + Blue package, youll get four concurrent streams. Thats one of the best options for larger households on the market.
Heres how that stacks up against some of the top live TV streaming competitors.

If youre looking to cut the cord, Sling TV is one of the best value options on the live TV streaming market.
Thats especially true if you can get what you need from a $35 per month subscription through Sling Orange or Sling Blue.
Even if you need to pay up for Sling Orange + Blue to get your desired channel mix, theres still some value to saving $15 per month versus a subscription to Slings top competitors.
Sling TV isnt going to be a great fit for everyone, though. Many users may see the expanded channel library, unlimited cloud DVR and superior access to sports, news and local channels as reasons to pay up for YouTube TV instead.

How To Watch Live Broadcast TV On Your Apple TV Without Cable
Being a cord cutter , I’m always on the hunt for new ways to keep myself entertained. On Apple TV, I use a handful of apps that, either I subscribe to a streaming service for , or offer a free streaming TV feature that doesn’t require a cable subscription .
For those looking for “cable lite” in the form of small packaged cable subscriptions from services like Sling TV and DirecTV Now, we’ve got a list of the best streaming live TV services. Keep in mind, though, that most of these services don’t offer unlimited access to broadcast channels like NBC, CBS, ABC, and Fox. What I’m referring to is the ability to watch any broadcast channel available in your area.
There is also this thing called broadcast television, which anyone can watch as long as they have a TV that supports digital television and an over-the-air HDTV antenna. The thing about broadcast television is that I couldn’t watch it on Apple TV. I’d have to switch my TV input over, and then flip through the channels until I found something to watch. I rarely watched broadcast television because I tend to stick with Apple TV for my TV and movie watching activities.
That is until I got HDHomeRun. With HDHomeRun, not only can I watch live broadcast television on my Apple TV, I can also watch it on my iPhone or iPad. Plus, with a subscription, you can record live TV and watch it the way a person with cable and a DVR would watch TV. Skip those commercials!

Sling TV App And Airplay
Although ESPN is a big draw, Sling TV has a range of additional channels. If you want to watch those on your Apple TV, you’ll need to use mirroring via the free Sling TV app your iPhone or iPad. Open the app, slide up from the bottom of the screen to view the Control Panel, and then select AirPlay, select Apple TV, and turn on Mirroring. I’ve found that the app was a bit balky when using mirroring but if you’re patient, it works fine.
One nice feature of Sling TV is that you can come and go as you like. If there’s a sports event you’re particularly interested in watching, you can sign up for a month and then cancel. After 30 days, your service ends. Then if you subsequently decide there’s something you want to watch, you can log into your account and restart your service.
There’s no word on whether Sling TV will eventually offer an app for Apple TV. The only statement on the Sling TV website is that currently there’s no app available and that people have the WatchESPN option.

A Fresh Coat Of Paint
While Sling has upgraded its interface a few times beforemost recently with a slicker look on Apple TV devicesthe latest changes are more fundamental.
Mentioned in this article
Sling has replaced its top menu tabs with a left sidebar, and it uses varying thumbnail sizes to break up the monotony as youre scrolling along. Text is bigger and brighter, the new deep-blue background looks less drab than the old gray, and the app uses more rounded edges throughout. I also like the use of icons to distinguish between live and recorded programs, along the way Sling explains its recommendations with phrases like Trending and You Might Like. Overall, everythings a lot easier to read and understand.
Sling has also made some big improvements to each of its menu sections:
- The home screen has more of a focus on whats new, highlighting your most-watched channels, recent recordings, and upcoming shows you might want to record.

New Sling TV app on the left, old app on the right.
- The grid guide has one-click commands to mark channels as favorites or record individual programs, and each channel expands to show program information when you highlight it. Sling has also trimmed its list of channel filters, so they all fit in a set of tabs at the top of the screen.
