What Is Pluto TV The Free Streaming TV Service Explained
– The Pluto TV streaming service has been operating for many years now, specifically in the US where it has grown to include more than 200 channels of free live TV and on demand content.
However, it is perhaps lesser known outside of the States, where it has more recently become available – including the UK, Germany, Spain, Italy, France, Austria, Switzerland and Latin America.
So, what is Pluto TV and what does it offer. Here we explain all.
Why Should I Use Pluto TV
All in all, Pluto TV is great for cord-cutters who miss the ritual of watching linear cable TV. Pluto TV will grant you the same experience while allowing you to save money along the way. It actually offers a lot of great content from popular channels.
Do you love old TV? Then yes, Pluto TV is definitely worth it, but it offers a lot of new content too. If youd like more information on the value of Pluto TV, check out our Pluto TV review .
How Much Does Pluto TV Cost
Nothing! It costs nothing at all. You don’t even need to sign up for an account to start using Pluto TV: the first time you click over to Pluto TV’s website or load up one of the apps, you’ll have a channel up and running right away.
Pluto TV is entirely ad-supported, and you’ll encounter these commercials in different ways while watching. At times, I’ve fired up the website and watched 2-3 minutes’ worth of ads before the content started – or occasionally after flipping channels. In other cases, the streams started right away without any sort of commercials preempting the movie or TV show.
The streaming TV channels have their usual commercial breaks every so often, and if you’re watching something and click to go back earlier in the content, you might be forced to watch a couple minutes of ads before playback resumes.
The ads themselves are usually short, between 15-30 seconds apiece, but you’ll see several of them – and quite often, the same handful of ads over and over again.

Is Pluto TV Free To Use Yes And Here’s How
Pluto TV has over 250 channels that you can watch for no cost. Here’s how that’s possible.
Streaming services have dominated the way we watch entertainment, but after a while the choice can become overwhelming… and expensive.
With Pluto TV, you can watch live TV without dishing out big bucks on monthly subscriptions. But is Pluto TV really free? Surprisingly, yes.
Here’s how Pluto TV is able to stream so much great content online for free.
Pluto TV Channels And Shows
Pluto TV’s channels are divided into sections such as Featured, Entertainment, Movies, Sports, Comedy, Kids, Latino and Tech + Geek.
There are versions of top cable networks like MTV but generally, Pluto TV channels aren’t the ones you’d find in a standard cable or satellite package.
The News channels are names that you know CNN, NBC News, CBS News, etc. but mostly, they play curated, pre-recorded clips instead of a live stream of the network.
Similarly, the Sports channels are ones you’ve heard of, like Fox Sports, NFL Channel, PGA Tour and Major League Soccer. However, you can’t really watch live sports on Pluto those channels play past games, highlights or analysis.
Pluto’s TV shows are mostly older sitcoms and reality shows that are generally found on other free streaming services, like Hell’s Kitchen, Roseanne and The First 48.
Recently, Pluto added a huge new addition: Pluto TV 007. This channel will stream nothing by James Bond movies, as Pluto says, “24 hours a day, 007 days a week.” Specifically, Pluto has 19 Bond movies starring Connery, Moore, Lazenby, Dalton and Brosnan, so don’t expect Daniel Craig’s run when you tune in. We’re waiting for the full list.
Pluto also added Pluto TV Pranks and British Comedy channels.

Pluto TV is an entirely legal way to get free cable. There are lots of cable alternatives in the space, but few offer free TV without requiring a contract. ViacomCBS owns the service, so they highlight their content on the platform. The streaming service also carries content from channels like Comedy Central and AMC.
Weve used Pluto TV for years as it has a lot to offer. If you want to watch TV without paying a cent, our review will help you determine if its a good choice for you.

Pluto TV Review: My Verdict
I love a good freebie, so I really wanted to like Pluto TV. And, in many ways, I did! The quality of the content was a pleasant surprise, and I liked the mix of live and on-demand content.
But free isnt a magic word. Pluto TV may be free, but any time you spend watching this service is time you arent spending watching something else. And free services only save you money if theyre replacing paid alternatives something that I dont think many free options are good enough to do.
The things I didnt like about Pluto TV the video quality, the age of the on-demand content, and the missing features of the app keep me from calling it an A+ streaming service. Given its price tag , Pluto TV is probably worth adding to your list as a supplement to your main streaming services. However, its definitely not ready to stand on its own.
Tips For Enjoying Pluto TV
Has some of the available content caught your attention? If so, here are some tips for enjoying it on Pluto TV:
- Set It and Forget It: Like a TV experience from yesteryear, you will have no DVR functionality on the live streams for Pluto TV. So, once you decide on a channel with content you want to see for the next 30 or 60-minute block, you might as well put the remote away and get comfortable. Theres no pause or rewind.
- Opt for the User Account: Im not one to tell you to sign up for something youre not required to sign up for, but it is worth it if youre going to use Pluto TV as your main source of streaming entertainment. Being able to set favorites for channels and order them as you desire is an easy time-saving win if youre going to be spending hours on the platform. Plus, you get access to some content that you otherwise wouldnt.

Pluto TV Features And Streaming Quality
I found that the video quality was mostly okay on Pluto TV, but could quickly tell that it wasnt HD. When I was watching on a mobile device, this wasnt a problem. On my smart TV, though, the lower quality was hard to ignore. As with several of my other complaints, this is a common issue with free streaming services.
The first feature I noticed about Pluto TVs app was the option to create an account. Many free streaming services Shout Factory TV, for example dont bother with user accounts. This feature has its good and bad sides. On the one hand, having no accounts would have meant no need to hand over my data. On the other hand, having a Pluto TV account allowed me to mark favorite channels, create watch lists, and pause a program on one device to resume watching it on another. Those are all great features.
Or, at least, they would be great features if they actually worked on all of my devices. Unfortunately, favorites and watch lists are only available on iOS, Apple TV, and Roku devices. They dont even work for the in-browser app!
Even the ability to continue watching a show or movie on another device seemed to have platform issues. In my testing, it appeared to only work on those same select devices: iOS, Apple TV, and Roku. As far as I can tell, theres no advantage in creating a Pluto TV user account if you are not using one of those three devices.
Pluto TV Joins The Big Leagues
Astronomers may not have much love for Pluto the planet, but the ratings scientists at Nielsen have just awarded a big upgrade to free streamer Pluto TV. For the first time ever, the Paramount-owned platform has shown up on The Gauge, Nielsens monthly scouting report sizing up the state of the U.S. TV universe. The metric tracks viewership which takes place on connected TV sets , and while almost all major platforms get measured, Nielsen only breaks out services by name if they account for one percent or more of overall TV usage during a given month. Pluto did just that in September, beating rivals such as Tubi, The Roku Channel, and Xumo to become the first free, ad-supported streamer to migrate from Nielsens other category to a spot among the most popular streamers overall.

Is there anything more fun than watching a show where a man and two robots make fun of some really awful movies? We dont think so, and you wont either after watching a few of these classic MST3K episodes. Be sure also to watch the Rifftrax Pluto TV channel . It features more riffing of movies from three former MST3K writers and performers.
Can I Favorite Channels On Pluto TV
Yes! When you find one or two channels where you regularly find content you like, you can favorite the channel to make it easier to find later. All you need to do is access the playback menu while watching a show, then click the heart icon at the bottom.

How Can I Access Pluto TV
Quite likely, the device you’re reading this article on can access Pluto TV. It’s pretty widely available across desktop, mobile, and set-top box devices, as well as smart TVs, even if it’s not as ubiquitous as something like Netflix.
First and foremost, you can access the Pluto TV website from a web browser. There’s also a desktop app available for Windows and Mac computers, if you plan on using Pluto a lot and would rather have something native installed.
If you’re on an iOS or Android phone or tablet, you can download the official app from each respective store. Apple TV, Roku, , and Android TV devices all have apps available, as well, plus smart TVs from Vizio, Samsung, and Sony offer up a Pluto TV app. There’s also a Pluto TV app on PlayStation 4.
Interestingly, you might be using Pluto TV without even knowing it. If you’re a VIZIO TV owner, the newly released WatchFree feature is an extension of Pluto TV. Turns out even TV manufacturers are coming around to the idea of free content.
Do I Have To Sit Through Ads On These Services
Yes. The tradeoff for receiving content to stream for free is that you have to tolerate commercials. Whether you’re watching a live channel or on-demand video, each of these services will run ads during your viewing experience. To keep the content free, they have to pay the bills with ads. The only exception on this list is Hoopla.

What Is Pluto TV And How Is It Different Than Cable TV Or Netflix
Pluto TV is a free online TV service. It manages to stay free due to the ads it shows, which might annoy some users, but these ads are still much shorter and appear less frequently than they do on broadcast TV.
The main difference between Pluto and the likes of Netflix and Hulu is that it is not focused on watching specific shows but rather on channel surfing.
The service is different than cable television because it is 100% free, but it doesnt offer as many channels, and it has no actual search optiononly categories to browse.
What You Can Watch On Pluto TV
Pluto TV offers a combination of streaming that I found really interesting. On one level, Pluto TV works just like the other free, ad-supported on-demand streaming services weve tried: Its basically Netflix, but with ads .
But Pluto TV also offers live streaming channels. Its not quite a skinny bundle like fuboTV or Sling TV, but it does offer a pretty cool live TV experience. Pluto TVs live-streaming side includes more than 250 channels, most of which are made-up networks that Pluto TV assembled out of on-demand content, but a few of which are real, honest-to-goodness channels. A few lucky markets will find their local CBS news station on Pluto TV. Other channels include free spin-off versions of familiar cable networks for example, I couldnt watch AMC online with Pluto TV, but I could watch a channel called Stories by AMC. BET isnt on Pluto TV, either, but a BET-branded channel called BET Pluto TV is. I even spotted live-streaming channels from Shout Factory TV . Other live-streaming channels offered me sports, kids entertainment, classic TV, game shows, Spanish-language programming, comedy, crime, anime, and more.
I was pretty impressed with the sheer amount of content on both the live and on-demand sides. With about 250 channels and thousands of hours of on-demand content, I always felt like I had several good options to choose from when it was time to watch.
