Why Is Chad Played By A Girl

Chad: New Series Tuesday April 6th | TBS

Chad is played by a girl or woman, rather for a number of reasons. Nasim Pedrad has explained to Entertainment Weekly that she wanted to sculpt a character she could have fun playing and she genuinely felt that she could make the choice work.

As for the artistic choice, she said that she thought it would be cool to tell a coming-of-age story where the teenager at the center of it wasnt a teenager, but an adult who is in on the joke.

Its also worth addressing that Nasim has portrayed male characters before, so its likely that this experience gave her the confidence to predict that the decision would work for both her and audiences.

For example, she previously told TV Guide I knew I could disappear into looking like a boy with hair and makeup a lot easier than I could a girl.

Audience Reviews For Chad: Season 1

  • Jul 18, 2022Pretty bad series. This appears to be the new “woke” direction being pushed on folks. Would do better to focus on a good story/plot instead of trying to jam all the perceived social issues into every episode.Josh H
  • May 23, 2022Absolutely terrible. No clue how on earth this was picked up as a series in the first place and then renewed for a 2nd season. This show is at a Trevor Noah level of bad.Nothing funny about this show at all.Todd P
  • Apr 16, 2022Ah, um, uh, NO! Why? Why? The answer/song remains the same: NO! That’s all you need to know: NO!West A
  • Apr 11, 2022Genuinely perplexed by the audience reviews here. I haven’t cracked up on a show as much in a bit. Great stuff and can’t wait to see more.Aaron B
  • Apr 05, 2022Uhmwho thought it was funny to have a 40 year old woman play a 14 year old boy. Seriously creepy and flat out terrible.Mr C
  • Mar 17, 2022Terrible. Just terrible. Reminds me why one should never, ever trust a ‘critic’. They are either paid, clueless, out of touch, or evaluate things based on goofy metrics that nobody cares about. Like comedians who tell you how funny an unfunny comedian is and that they are bold and original and have honed their craft and are brilliant. They still aren’t funny.Chad C

Why Is Nasim Playing A 14

Nasim is the creator, showrunner, writer, producer, and leading actor in Chad , and she’s said in interviews that she wanted to create a character who she felt she could really embody somehow, that resulted in a 14-year-old boy.

I dont know why my truest essence is that of a 14-year-old boy, but here we are, she joked with The New York Times.

But while it may seem like an unconventional choice, Nasim said it was a decision based on comedy and metaphor.

Teenagers are already struggling to define their identity and feel accepted by their peers, she told the outlet. When youre an immigrant kid, youre also caught between two cultures. It becomes an extra obstacle in the gauntlet of high school.

Chad is a Persian boy trying to find his way in an American high school, and Nasim’s family immigrated to the U.S. from Iran when she was only 3 and faced similar struggles. So, she felt it was only fitting that she portrays the main character.

Chad Season 2 Release Date

What is Chad about? The story behind the TV show

Chad season 1 premiered on April 6, 2021, on TBS and finished airing on May 25, 2021. The show has eight episodes, with each one lasting around 20-24 minutes. The coming-of-age comedy series has been compared to Hulus Pen15, where the protagonist is similarly played by an adult actor supported by a cast full of youngsters. Chad is misunderstood and conceited, the end product of being a socially dejected teenager. Pedrad that she wanted to create a character with nuance and specificity and flaws that are relatable. While some viewers might sympathize with him, others might find him difficult, as critics have stated.

Regardless of the mixed feedback it has received, audiences might be anticipating another season. And sure enough, TBS confirmed its renewal in May 2021. Moreover, the California Film Commission awarded a $3.6 million tax incentive to shift its second-season production from Vancouver to California. This means that there might be an expansion in its cast and crew. It has also been reported that the upcoming season will introduce Max Searle as the co-showrunner alongside creator and star Pedrad.

As much as we hope for its steady return, the creators or the network have not released any production updates for the next season. So it isnt easy to ascertain a specific date and time for its premiere. Needless to say, the filming will take up a few months, and if everything goes well, we can expect Chad season 2 to air sometime in 2022.

I Felt Like I Could Really Disappear Into This Little Dude

Explaining the decision in the aforementioned Entertainment Weekly interview, she opened up:

I wanted to make something that felt very honest and grounded, and especially with the wig and the eyebrows, the posture and the slight dropping of my voice, I felt like I could really disappear into this little dude.

She also added that a grown-up playing Chad works so well because teenagers dont know whats so funny about being a teenager, whereas an adult could bring that perspective and specificity to the character.

What Parents Need To Know

Parents need to know that Chad is a sitcom about an incoming freshman teen boy, Chad , who undergoes minor humiliations galore in his pursuit of popularity and happiness. Chad’s family is Persian and Muslim, facts that Chad mostly tries to hide , but he also has grudging respect for both his heritage and religion, and the fact that his family is comfortable with their background. He also struggles to appear to be a “typical” American teen, though he often gets “typical” wrong. Iffy content is mainly in the form of jokes, like when Chad pretends he lost his virginity over the summer and a classmate says his partner “wanted that D.” In another scene, a girl offers to have sex with him and Chad passes out and runs home, terrified. Teens drink and vape . They also use marijuana edibles. In one scene, Chad unknowingly gulps down a bunch of enhanced gummy worms he spits them out when he finds out what’s in them. Cursing includes “damn,” “ass,” “dick,” “hell,” “dipshit.” The show can get a bit raunchy at times, but the overall tone is sweet, lovable, and absurd.

Nasim Pedrad is likely a familiar presence to most audiences.

The American sitcom about a 14-year-old boy attempting to fit in and navigate high school was renewed for season 2 on TBS. Indeed, its back this April.

Before its back on screens, on the other hand, you may be curious about the casting. So, why is Chad played by a girl?

Nasim Got Some Pushback For Wanting To Play A Teenage Boy

Before Chad found its home with TBS, Nasim said FOX initially commissioned a pilot episode in 2016 but ultimately passed on the series.

When I first pitched it, there was definitely an emphatic hope that I would change my mind and play his mom, she said.

But Nasim, who has portrayed multiple male characters in her sketches with SNL prior to Chad, said she was very insistent on the premise she pitched.

You can watch Nasim portray all of the awkward moments of a 14-year-old boy just trying really, really hard to fit in when the show airs new episodes Tuesdays on TBS at 10:30 p.m. EST.

Is It Any Good

Chad Season 1 Trailer | Rotten Tomatoes TV

Zippy writing, lovable characters, and a keen sense of absurdity distinguish this sitcom from a bumper crop of other “high school is sooooo awkward!” comedies which all blend together. And like sitcoms with similar settings, Chad does share some tropes. The high school where most of the action happens is inhabited by polarized cool kids and very-much-not-cool kids Chad himself is an awkward freshman trying to pass himself off as a smooth upperclassman there are unrealistically huge parties, unrealistically old classmates, and so on. Even the idea of an adult playing a goofy adolescent isn’t new PEN15, please report to the principal’s office.
