Google TV: Whats In A Name
The company has used the term Google TV before, when it launched a smart TV initiative with help from Intel, Logitech, and Sony. By 2014, however, the company moved on to a new approach based on the Android operating system. That became known as Android TV, and weve seen several devices leverage the platform over the years, including TiVos Stream 4K and Nvidias Shield TV line.
Fast-forward to 2020, and we started seeing mention of Google TV once more, this time in rumors surrounding a new Chromecast device. However, instead of being a simple rebranding or renaming of Android TV, the version of Google TV that ships with the companys new Chromecast can be thought of as a new software layer on top of the existing operating system. So instead of seeing the same kind of menus and interfaces youd see on a Shield TV Pro, for example, buyers of the Chromecast will get a different experience one deeply centered on voice commands and search. This new user interface is being made available to other device makers and, over the next couple years, itll eventually replace the experience current Android TV users are accustomed to. So, depending on how you look at it, earlier rumors that Google TV would replace Android TV arent off base itll just be a longer process than some were predicting.
Dumpster Fire Of Ui And Ux
For a Google product, this app is astonishing awful. Ive used more of it recently for tv shows I love that have left Netflix and other streaming platforms. Here are the problem areas: 1) you can purchase all seasons of a series but the interface doesnt acknowledge you bought all of them and doesnt separate them out. So you have to search hundreds of episodes in a single line and the same seasons you purchased that are broken out by season ask you to purchase them again to view them in that menu. Its absurd. 2) there is no return to view or continue watching orientation in the UI except the one episode you were in anchored at the top of the experience. Once you complete that episode, you have to go back to the menu and find where you were and play the next episode. 3) the experience claims to allow binge watching but most shows do not auto play the next episode even when the feature is turned on. After each episode you have to go find your place and play the next which makes it even harder when 1) and 2) above are so poor. Honestly guys, put your celebrated design sprints in action and get the right folks from product, ux and design in a room and fix this shitshow. And maybe look at how seasons are sold and appear in the UI vs. buying each individual episode. Not rocket science here

Can You Get Google Play Store On Roku
Unfortunately, you cant get Google Play Store on Roku. Roku has its own operating system, so theres no framework to include Android-based apps. You can only install apps or channels that are made specifically for Roku. You can still mirror your screen, but the only benefit of that is having the content displayed on a larger TV screen.
Does Stadia Work On Google TV
Since Google TV is basically Android TV, yes, Stadia does work.
Stadia is available as a downloadable app on Google TV. You wont have it pre-installed. Which is likely a good thing since streaming TV devices dont typically come with much storage in the first place. All you need is a controller and a Stadia subscription to get started. Who says you need a PS5 to game at home.

Should I Use Google TV
If you are an Android user, yes, you should definitely use Google TV. But if you use iOS, then its likely not the best option for you.
Google TV is really great at a number of things. Particularly recommendations. In my experience, Google TV has recommended a ton of shows that I ended up loving. And it was much better than Netflix or Hulus recommendations. Though that likely comes from it knowing what I watch from all of its apps, instead of just what I watch on Netflix or Hulu.
If you also have cut the cord and use YouTube TV, Sling TV, Philo or FuboTV, then its a really good option. As the live TV guide works really well, and its quicker than opening the app.

How To Watch Google Play Movies & TV On Windows 10 With Movies Anywhere
If you’re in the U.S., there is the alternative of using Movies Anywhere. Both Microsoft and Google are among the companies that support the platform, which is designed to help you watch all of your movies on all of your devices no matter which store you bought them from.
So, if you buy something from Google Play on your Android device, the service will be able to sync it to your Windows 10 PC for you to be able to watch in Microsoft’s Movies & TV app.
Besides only being available in the U.S., the other caveat is that it only supports movies, not TV shows. So if you buy TV shows from Google Play, you’ll need to resort to the steps above to be able to watch them on your PC.
Whichever method you use, however, it isn’t difficult to watch Google-bought content on your Windows 10 PC. It’s certainly easier than buying from Microsoft and watching on your Android phone .

Changes To Google Play Movies & TV On Samsung Smart TVs
Starting 15 June 2021, Google Play Movies & TV app will no longer be available on Samsung Smart TVs.
The YouTube app will continue to be available for your movies and shows needs1.
Just log in with your Google account in the YouTube app today, youll have access to all of your past purchases, and will be able to browse, purchase, and rent new content2.
Here are a few more things to be aware of:
All of your past purchases will be available on YouTube.
Your Google Play credits can be used on YouTube to make purchases.
Play Family Library purchases can be viewed on YouTube but purchases made on YouTube do not support family sharing. Purchases made from the Google Play Movies & TV website or app will continue to support family sharing.
Your Watchlist is not available on YouTube, but you can set up Playlists.

At launch, there were no parental controls for Google TV. But that has since changed. In March 2021, Google announced that parental controls were coming to Google TV.
These parental controls allow parents to set how long kids can watch TV. As well as setting the limit on ratings for content that they can watch. And there is also a profile lock, so that kids arent able to make changes without their parents approval.
Its pretty simple to do, and you can make a profile on Google TV specifically for kids. So that when the adults want to watch TV, they dont have to deal with these limitations. The controls are simple, but they work.
So What Can You Do In Google TV Or Google TV
The app version of Google TV, the one that replaces Google Play Movies & TV, serves as a content aggregator, meaning it can pull from a variety of services and offer them up in one place you. So, if you searched for a specific show or movie, the app would offer up which service, or services, currently offer the content youre looking for. As of now, here are the services currently supported by the app version of Google TV:

- Tubi TV
- VH1
On the new Chromecast, Google TV serves as the user interface youll see when you use the device. If youre used to standard Android TV, this new approach might require some adjustment. Movies, shows, and other content are arranged by category, regardless of which service is offering up the title itself. So youll see options from, say, Disney+ side-by-side with Netflix movies. You can customize things to highlight the services youre subscribed to, but early reviews indicate youll still see content suggestions from other services youre not signed up for.

is where you can buy or rent movies and TV shows and download them to your Android device. If you rent, you have 30 days to watch it or 48 hours once you begin watching your rental before it expires. When it comes to TV shows, you can usually either buy individual episodes or you can download a full season.
How To Use Google Play Music On Roku
Unfortunately, Google Play Music no longer exists. Google announced back in late 2020 that it would be discontinued, with its services moving to YouTube music.

Getting Google Play On Roku
There are lots of Google services available, but availability is limited on Roku. In fact, theres no dedicated Google app for Roku. However, you can watch Google Play Movies & TV content through the YouTube app on Roku which well get into later.
There are a couple of third-party apps available that can help you use other Google services on Roku, too. For instance, you can use the PhotoView app for Google photos, but for any other Google service, youll need to mirror your screen to Roku.
Theres also the Movies Anywhere app, which is an online streaming service that allows you to combine all of your purchases from multiple streaming services in one place. Its free to join and will allow you to watch Google Play content on your Roku. Before you jump in, though, we suggest you read the privacy policy, as it does log some data.
How To Access Google Play Movies & TV Content Through The Youtube App On Roku
Since Roku doesnt have a dedicated Google Play Movies & TV channel, you need to use the YouTube Roku app to access Google content. Its easy to add channels to Roku. Simply follow the steps below.
Press the home button on your Roku remote to ensure youre on the home screen.
Select streaming channels from the menu and press OK on the remote.
Select search channels and press OK on the remote.
Type YouTube into the search box until you see it listed on the right-hand side. Then, select the channel and press OK on the remote.
Select add channel and press OK on the remote. Youll then see a message that says the channel has been added press OK.
Select go to channel and press OK on the remote.
Sign in to the same Google account that you use for Google Play on YouTube. Then, go to library in the left menu and select movies & TV. Youll now see any purchases you have already made. Choosing movies & TV from the left menu will allow you to browse for new content.

If you see a title on your home screen that you end up wanting to watch, you can click on it. This will take you to a page that will give you a ton of information about that title. That includes its Rotten Tomatoes score, its genre, year it was released and its runtime. But you will also see a list of apps you can watch it in.
Theres also a way to add it to your watchlist, and mark it as watched, or give it a thumbs up or down to help the recommendations engine. And of course, you can watch a trailer from this page.
This is very useful if you are somewhat interested in a movie, but arent 100% sure about committing two hours to watching it. Or if you arent sure where you can watch it. Google TV makes that super simple.
