What Can A Smart TV Do

A smart TV is a television that can connect to the internet directly, without the need for a secondary gadget like an . They tend to be pre-loaded with an array* of well-known catch-up streaming apps like BBC iPlayer and ITV Hub as well as subscription services such as and Netflix. A smart TV will also provide the users’ access to other internet services and apps, such as social media, news and weather, and internet browsers.

*The selection of apps available pre-loaded or available to download may differ between smart TV manufacturers and models, so its worth double-checking the model youre considering. Not all compatible apps will be automatically installed, so you may need to download apps from the Smart TVs online store manually, as you do with smartphones and tablets.

The Facts About Smart TVs

The overwhelming number of TVs on the market, especially in midsized and larger models, are smart TVs. These televisions can access online content, such as streaming video services from Amazon Prime, Hulu, and Netflix. Basic smart TVs may be limited to the most popular services, while others offer a vast assortment of apps. More sophisticated smart TVs can respond to voice commands, using microphones built into the TV’s remote control or using an app on a smartphone.

More than 80 percent of the TVs sold these days are smart TVs, according to market research firm Omdia. But if youre considering a more basic TV or you already have a TV that lacks smarts, you can easily add internet capability using a , such as an Amazon Fire TV, an Apple TV, a Google Chromecast, or a Roku player.

Some manufacturers have developed their own smart TV platforms, while others may use a licensed system, such Amazon Fire TV, Android TV from Googlewhich is being renamed Google TV or Roku TV. A TV with built-in smarts can make accessing content easytheres only a single remote controlbut a separate streaming media player may have more content options, or use an interface that makes finding and accessing content easier.

Streaming Media Players

And be aware that streaming video requires robust broadband and WiFi connections to prevent the video from freezing or buffering. If you move more of your entertainment to the internet, you may need to upgrade to a faster connection.

Getting The Right Connections

Your ideal TV should provide enough video connections not only for now, but for the foreseeable future as well. The most important input is HDMI, which supports all major forms of digital video sources including Blu-ray players, game consoles, set-top boxes, cameras, camcorders, phones, tablets, and PCs through a single cable. Most TVs have three or four HDMI ports, but some might only have two. It’s the best way to send 1080p video from your devices to your screen with one cable, and will be the main way you connect your main sources of entertainment to your TV. If you want a 4K screen, make sure at least one of the HDMI ports is HDMI 2.0. It’s the latest standard that supports 4K video at 60 frames per second older HDMI ports can only handle 4K up to 30 frames per second, at best.

As for cables, unless you have a huge home theater system and plan to run cables between devices at distances longer than 25 feet , brands and prices don’t matter. We’ve compared the performance of high-end cables and inexpensive ones, and found that they all carry digital signals similarly. More expensive cables might have a better build quality, but you won’t see any performance advantages from them. Don’t shop for HDMI cables at retail stores, and ignore and clerks who warn you of “dirty electricity” or “viruses” that can come with cheap cables . Hop online and find the least expensive cable at the size you need and snap it up.

The Top Budget TV Brands: Not What You’d Think

LG 42 inch tv

The biggest names in TVs include LG, Samsung, Sony, and other brands with fairly massive global presences. Big names don’t always mean the best values, however. While we’ve seen some incredible TVs from those manufacturers, they’re almost all flagship models that cost a few thousand dollars each. Their less expensive TVs are far less impressive, and generally much less promoted.

The best brands for budget TVs might be unfamiliar to you: Hisense and TCL. These Chinese companies have made inroads in the United States over the last few years, and have carved out a space for themselves in the TV market with very affordable models that offer surprisingly good picture quality. They occupy the land Vizio used to dominate, which Vizio has somewhat ceded while claiming its own dominance in the midrange TV market.

Shopping For TV Sales

New TVs don’t usually hit shelves until spring or summer, so you’re looking at a solid three or four months where you know what new TVs are coming out. If you can find deep discounts for the previous year’s models in January, and you know they’re good performers based on our reviews, you should go for them.

Keep an eye out for sales around big sports events like the Super Bowl, or when football season is just starting. You might be able to find price cuts of a few hundred dollars or more. Like all sales, pay attention to which models are on sale different tiers and series of TVs can have wildly different performance.

Huge price slashes on Black Friday often promote budget or midrange televisions with seemingly big discounts, but their pictures might not be nearly as good as higher-end models. Check the model numbers against the reviews for a good sense of whether the discount you see is worthwhile.

What About Led Video Walls

This is where big screens get slightly confusing and really, really expensive. It’s also where TVs get much, much bigger than 75 inches. While LED TVs are just LCD TVs with LED backlights. LED video walls are a completely different technology. They use clusters of colored light-emitting diodes to form each pixel and light it up, like OLED. The good news about LED video walls is that they can get really big. The bad news is that they have to be really big, and that’s a very limiting factor if you want to fit a 4K picture in a certain space.

LED video walls are commonly used for digital signage. If you see a huge light-up sign that plays video on the side of a building, it’s probably an LED array. If you get close to it, like within ten feet, you can probably see the individual pixels from each relatively large LED cluster. They’re great for stadiums, but not for home theaters.

That’s changing with miniaturized LEDs, like Samsung’s microLED video wall and Sony’s Crystal LED wall. These newer video walls have pixel pitches of 0.8 to 1.2mm, which means the pixels are small enough that you can sit comfortably black and not notice the individual lights. They’re still huge pixels compared with LCD and OLED TVs , but they’re much smaller than the big commercial signs with lights as big as your fist.

Most recently, support for Apple AirPlay 2 is being added to several new TVs from LG, Samsung, Sony, and Vizio. This lets you use your iPhone or iPad to stream content from iTunes to the TV. Apple is also releasing the Apple TV app with its Apple TV+ service on many smart TV platforms. This means you can watch Apple video content on nearly any TV without needing an Apple TV 4K, which was previously necessary.

4K content is now freely available on many streaming services and on Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, even if it hasn’t been adopted by broadcast or cable TV services yet. If you have a very fast internet connection, you can watch some excellent shows on Amazon and Netflix in 4K . New films are also coming out digitally in 4K through various on-demand streaming services like Vudu.

Ultra HD Blu-ray discs are a relatively new physical media format similar to Blu-ray discs. Don’t expect to play them on your current Blu-ray player, though you need a dedicated Ultra HD Blu-ray player, a Microsoft Xbox Series X, or a Sony PlayStation 5 to handle the format. The good news is that it stores 4K video with HDR , and even can handle advanced surround sound audio if your speaker system supports it. Since it’s a physical media format, you don’t need to worry about your internet connection to be sure you’re getting 4K, either.

How To Choose The Best TV For You

If you’re trying to find the right TV for you, there are several factors to consider, from the basics of screen size and resolution, to the specific smart features and ports offered on a given model. We recommend most homes opt for a 55- or 65-inch TV with 4K resolution. We’re also big fans of smart TVs, which let you stream all of your favorite shows and use dozens of apps without a second device.

We have extensive shopping advice, like our TV buying guide and figuring out what size TV you should buy. And if you still have questions about smart TV features and capabilities, check out Smart TVs: Everything you need to know.

Performance: Our TV reviews also look at how well each TV performs in key areas, like picture quality and sound, so don’t forget to look up the model you’re interested in to see our TV reviews.

Ports: We generally recommend opting for more ports, so that you never have to manually unplug and re-plug HDMI cables to switch from your Bl-ray player to your game console or other device. Three ports is common, but nicer TVs usually have 4 HDMI ports.

Extra USB ports are also handy for powering antenna amplifiers or streaming sticks, as well as viewing media from USB storage.

HDR: Most TVs offer high dynamic range support, with Dolby Vision being the top format and HDR10 the most basic. But more important is the backlight, with OLED TVs and LED sets with local dimming offering the best HDR capabilities.
