Visualizing How Your TV Will Look

One of the best ways of visualizing how a larger TV will look in your living room is to create a cardboard model of the screen size. You can do this by taping a few old boxes together, then prop it up in place and stand back.

This wont simulate what its like watching content on the TV, but it will give you a good idea of whether the field of view is too wide, or whether the TV looks ridiculous in a small room. You can move furniture around to suit or see what difference mounting the TV on the wall would make.

This technique is useful from a home design perspective, but its not an exact science. You should be able to see whether the edges of the screen are too wide for comfortable viewing, but you wont know for sure until you get the TV up in person.

Optimal Viewing Distance Based On TV Resolution

The TVs resolution will also play a role in how far you can sit from the TV. There is a point at which your eyes can make out the individual pixels of the TV screen, and the picture begins to degrade based on your visual acuity.

TVs with higher resolution have smaller pixels that make up the image, which are harder to see at the same distance. This means that you can sit closer to TVs with a higher resolution before you can begin to see the pixels.

You can sit much closer to a 4K TV without making out the pixels than you can a 1080P TV and have a more immersive viewing experience.

The number of pixels on a display in relation to the size is known as pixel density, and its measured in pixels per inch, or PPI. Use our PPI calculator to measure the pixel density of your screen.

The viewing distance calculator above takes this into account when recommending a size and seating distance.

Do you want to go that big? Well, that’s a different question. I find larger screen sizes easier on the eyes, as more of your field of view is taken up with the roughly uniform brightness of the screen. In an otherwise dark room, your pupils are more naturally closed to the amount of light thanks to the big screen.

Conversely, I find watching a small screen in a dark room more fatiguing, as your pupils are more open with this one annoying pinprick of bright light . Many people complain about headaches when they watch TV in a dark room. One possible cause is the hundreds of nits from an HDR TV taking up a tiny fraction of your field of view. Think about when someone shines a flashlight in your eyes when you’ve been in the dark for an hour. With a projector, you’ve got far less light than what a TV produces, and it’s spread out over a huge swath of your vision.

True bias lights, leaving the room lights on and turning down an LCD’s backlight can minimize fatigue as well or better than a big screen, but I like watching TV in a dark room. To each their own.

What Role Does Seat Distance Play In The Television Experience

There is a clear trend towards ever larger TVs. However, since the apartments are not getting any bigger, TVs with Ultra HD resolution are an interesting alternative and also play an increasingly important role in our product planning. These TVs offer the possibility of integrating TVs with a screen diagonal of 46 inches or larger in almost any room. The optimal seat distance is half that of a Full HD TV, so users of large TVs can see a sharp, detailed picture even in smaller rooms with a smaller seat distance to the TV.

Frank Eschholz, Product Manager Visual Solutions at Toshiba Europe

It is worth knowing that all screens of the same class initially have the same number of pixels. But depending on the resolution in SD or HD, only fewer or more pixels are displayed, which may contribute to an apparently poorer image quality with a small viewing distance in the case of SD reception.

Other Things To Consider

What’s the BEST TV Size for your room? | TVs Explained

Viewing angle: Some TVs can lose colour accuracy and contrast when you’re not watching the picture directly straight on. It’s a bit like the image is being washed out. With TVs, this can be a problem if you have a narrow living room or often watch TV with a big group of people. Check our expert reviews for viewing angle ratings for every television that we test.

Curved screens: Many TVs from the big brands now have curved screens rather than flat. They’re claimed to ‘wrap’ the picture around you like with IMAX, but the effect is subtle at best, and you have to sit straight on to really see it. Also, the screens can occasionally appear a little warped, particularly when lights reflects off them.

The stand: generally, the bigger the TV the bigger the stand will be and while this is usually the case buying a new big-screen TV doesn’t necessarily mean you need to throw away your old media unit. Some TVs have a central stand, while others have separate feet at each end of the screen. If you have a smaller unit then look for a set with a central stand.

Television Sizes: How It Works

Television sizes are generally labeled according to the screen diameter, which is the length of the diagonal of the screen. This is the distance between the opposite corner points of the screen. It is usually measured in inches although there are brands in some countries that use values in centimeters.

Attention:

Its All About The Field Of View

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers states that a field of vision of between 30º and 40º provides an optimal viewing experience for most content. The SMPTE describes itself as a global professional society of individuals and corporations collaborating for the advancement of all things technical in the motion picture, television and digital media.

In cinemas, THX recommends a field of view of 36º for cinematic presentations. THX was established in part by George Lucas in 1983 to develop high fidelity standards for visual mediums including television and cinema.

If in doubt, stick with 30º as this is widely accepted and quoted as being ideal for most people.

How Big Should Televisions Be

For us and our readers, 55 devices are no longer large, but the standard. Considering that, depending on the quality, the optimum viewing distance is only just over two meters and they fit very well into small rooms. Hardly anyone sits closer to the screen than that his living room. For Ultra-HD television, the distance is halved to just over one meter! In theory, 65-inches or much larger devices would be suitable for normal living rooms provided you watch HDTV in perfect quality, and better still, Blu-ray movies. Experience shows: a TV cant be big enough. The most common limitation is the home design, i.e. the wife.

Let’s Consider All Things Great And Small

What size TV should you buy? Its easy to be lured into buying a new TV with talk of 4K resolution, high-end smart TV features, or fancy speaker arrays. However, if you havent got the right TV size for you, you can end up with an over-sized display that you keep walking into, or a way-too-small screen that you have to squint to see from across your living room.

Getting the right TV size for you will depend on your individual needs, as well as the needs of your home, the size of the room you plan to put it in, the number of people that will be watching it at any one time and, of course, how big your budget is.

You might know vaguely that you want a humble-sized small TV or something super-sized, but there are plenty of different TV sizes to consider at a variety of prices in the middle. But even then theres a lot to think about. If a mid-sized TV is what you’re after, do you want the flagship 55-inch size, or is a 49-inch the largest you can fit on your counter? Are you desperate for one of the best 65-inch 4K TVs, but scared it might dominate the space?

The average television is getting bigger and bigger every year, and our expectations of size, suitability, features and TV tech are constantly changing too.

Why Is Viewing Distance Important

The distance you generally sit from the display has a huge impact on determining the best-sized TV for your room. If you want to sit closer, your viewing experiences picture quality could be diminished by certain types of super-sized HDTVs.

The pixels will be smaller and closer together on a smaller screen, resulting in sharper picture quality. On a large screen, the pixels are bigger and may start to become visible the closer you come to the screen if the program source is not Blue-ray or HD.

Recommended Screen Sizes By Resolution

With the optimum viewing distance in mind , heres the ideal screen size for each native resolution available on the market.

HD/1080p

Non-4K TVs now are generally only a wise investment if youre seeking out a 32-inch TV or smaller probably a supplemental one, for a bedroom or kitchen and youre keen to keep your spending on a budget. At that size, any higher resolution will make little difference.

4K

Its at around the 50-inch to 55-inch mark that a 4K-quality television really makes the difference. That said, youll find plenty of much smaller televisions that have 4K, and theyre not disproportionately more expensive than non-4K either. Ultra HD is simply no longer the exclusive, high-price technology it used to be.

8K

Thinking of buying an 8K TV? Good for you! Boasting a gargantuan 7680 by 4320 pixel resolution, 8K-quality TVs are available on the market, but decidedly high-end. For example, the Samsung 65-inch QEQ800 8K TV is well over £2,000 at Currys PC World. But dont get envious: to really enjoy an 8K television in an average living room, youd need to buy one of at least 75 inches to really appreciate the difference with 4K. This makes 8K sets, for now, exclusively for venue owners and show-offs.

To make things simple, heres our advice: buy 4K.

How To Choose The Best Display Size For A Conference Room Or Classroom

How do you choose the right size display for a classroom? Or how do you choose the right TV size for a conference room? These are deceptively simple questions with surprisingly complex answers. In fact, there is quite a bit of science, math, and geometry behind answering these types of questions.

It is so complex in some cases that the audiovisual industry has created a set of calculators to help simplify the various equations used in determining things like the ideal screen size, mounting height, or viewing distance. Even then, we feel that these calculators have a steep learning curve and require the taking of too many measurements to help you confidently buy.
