How to add channels on your Roku devices

When connecting the cable box and the Roku TV, it should be effortless to access cable television. Turn on the cable TV, and then use the remote to turn on the Roku TV. Afterward, follow these steps:

  • Press the Home button on the remote to access the Rokus home screen.
  • Navigate to the Quick Access Menu to the right using the arrow keys on your remote.
  • Highlight the HDMI 1 block on the screen.
  • Press the OK button on your remote. This should display the content from the cable box, and you may be able to use your Roku TV remote to browse through the channels, but sometimes, the box uses a special remote.
  • When your cable box gets powered on, and the cables get plugged in, everything should work correctly. If you cant see the image, turn on both devices and check if the connectors are plugged in well. Then, turn them on and try again.

    Hotel And Dorm Room Connect

Setting up a streaming device in a hotel or a college dorm isnt always easy. Thats because the Wi-Fi in these locations often requires a secondary sign-in step known as a captive portal that uses a browser screen instead of the usual Wi-Fi password prompt. With Rokus hotel and dorm room connect feature, you can use your smartphone, tablet, or laptop to sign in to the captive portal page and get your Roku device connected. Heres our full set of instructions for this procedure.

How Does Roku Work With Cable

Roku also packs a lot of benefits for those looking to keep their cable subscription. Almost every major cable network has its channels available on Roku. If you subscribe to a cable provider, these channels will allow you to log in with your cable provider username and password and provide you with loads of content online.

To me, having a Roku with your cable subscription seems odd. In most cases, the cable subscription is just for access to the TV networks. Why use the clunky on-demand the cable company offers when you can simply watch networks like HGTV on Roku.

The Roku version of the cable channels typically has more content available, and its better organized. The majority of the people I know that have a Roku and a cable subscription to 90% of their TV viewing through Roku while the cable box sits and collects dust.

In many cases, a Roku negates the DVR portion of your cable subscription. You can simply stream these shows whenever you want through your Roku. When I had cable, my DVR was costing us $19 per month. This alone makes the Roku pay for itself in about 4-5 months. You can use that time to see if the Roku can replace your cable subscription entirely.

    • Roku Express $29.99

Can I Plug An Airtv Into A Roku Ultra

    What is Roku?

Yes. The AirTV 2 and AirTV Anywhere are OTA DVRs compatible with Roku Ultra, Roku TVs and Roku streaming sticks.

AirTV DVRs are made to work with Sling TV.

Free local channels are integrated within the Sling TV app alongside channels that are included with your Sling TV subscription.

After you connect a TV antenna to an AirTV unit, scan for local channels using the Sling TV app on a smartphone or tablet. AirTV DVRs connect to the internet over WiFi, but can be connected through Ethernet.

You can read my review of the AirTV 2 for more information.

Once you set up your OTA DVR to a Roku, you will be able to use your Roku remote control or Roku app to control the DVR.

Set Up Your Home Screen With Your Most Used App Tiles

Ill leave you with perhaps the most understated tip on the list. Roku has a default method for dropping tiles onto your home screen after they have been downloaded, but in most cases thats not the most convenient way to browse them.

You can rearrange these tiles in any way you like by using your remote. While hovering over an app, push the options button on your remote. You should see the option to Move Channel from there. There also is the option to remove a channel from your menu on this screen.

Should You Buy A Roku Express Team Clarks Review

Roku, which originated in 2008 as a way to stream Netflix content on a television, has become a leader in producing devices that make going from cable to streaming as easy as possible.

The Roku Express, which retails at $29.99, is a great entry-level option for the rookie streamer.

I love Roku because it gives you the whole world of television all in one simple platform to watch, says money expert Clark Howard. No one has ever come up with a method to watch TV with such simplicity and ease as Roku.

The purchase of a Roku Express includes the streaming device, an HDMI cable and a remote. In this article, well review everything you need to know before you buy one.

Accessing Cable With A Roku TV Using Coaxial Cable

If your cable box requires a coax cable to connect to the Roku TV, the method is slightly different than using an HDMI connection. Follow these steps:

  • Plug the coaxial cable into the cable box and into your Roku TVs Coax In.
  • Turn on the Roku TV.
  • Hit the Home button on your Roku remote.
  • Use the arrow keys on your remote to navigate to the Antenna card/block.
  • Select OK using the remote to confirm.
  • Choose Start finding channels to set up the cable box tuner and find all the available channels.
  • Choose No, channels 3 and 4 are not required if you are using coax without a cable box . Choose Yes if your cable box uses a coax output .
  • Wait for the TV to scan for all the available channels.
  • After the scanning is finished, the TV will notify you of how many channels it found, alerting you that the cable box is successfully set up. As long as your cable box is connected to your Roku TV, youll be able to access it via the Antenna card/block.

Take note that cable boxes with a coaxial Out to TV connection still handle the tuning of channels. No matter what gets selected on the box, the signal gets transmitted to the TV via analog channel 3 or 4 and is NOT high definition. These cable boxes are ancient versions, but some semi-old models still offer the coax out.

You can always upgrade your cable box via your service provider to get rid of the old analog channel 3/4 output to tv and use an HDMI cable instead!

TLCs Roku Smart TVs are award-winning televisions that offer impeccable video and audio quality and all the benefits of a Roku streaming platform. Although they have various upsides, people are unsure whether they can connect their cable box to these modern televisions.

If youre one of those that still havent cut the cord, you shouldnt worry. Roku TVs dont differ from regular TVs when it comes to connectivity. If you have a cable subscription and a cable box at home, you can easily connect it to your Roku TV. This article will explain how to connect the two.

Accessing Cable With A Roku TV Using Audio/video Rca Inputs

Today, most receivers and cable boxes dont use RCA AV-IN inputs to transfer media from the device to the TV screen. However, if you own an older cable box, youll probably need to use these cables instead of HDMI or coaxial. Luckily, all Roku TVs have at least one set of RCA AV-IN ports on the back of the device.

To connect the devices via AV inputs, youll need composite AV cables , which are the old-fashioned red, white, and yellow cables. These cables contain three different colored male-end plugs on each end. Each connector is colored differently to represent each specific input:

  • The Yellow RCA plug is for video.
  • The White RCA plug is for left-channel audio.
  • The Red RCA plug is for right-channel audio.
  • Follow these steps to connect the devices:

  • Turn off your Roku TV and connect the RCA plugs into the A/V ports with the matching color .
  • Turn on the TV and press the Home button on your remote to access the home screen.
  • If you plugged everything in correctly and the TV recognized the cable box, your AV card/block will display a small preview of whats currently on the cable screen.
  • Use the arrow keys on your Roku remote to navigate to AV, then press the OK button to launch the AV screen.

What Is The Best Roku For Free Channels

Theres a whole lineup of Roku players to choose from, but well list some recommendations here to help you choose one. As a quick note, though, we wont recommend the cheapest Roku, the Roku Express, because it doesnt support 4K streaming. You can enjoy 4K streaming service with the Roku Premiere for just a few more bucks, and there is a fair bit of free 4K content.

How Roku Express Will Save You Money Vs Cable TV

    UK

First, lets take whatever youre paying to your local cable or satellite provider for television each month and put it right back into your pocket. From there, I think we can help most of you find a lower monthly cost for your television needs via the use of Roku Express.

Youre going to need high-speed internet to stream on a Roku Express, so keep that in the monthly budget.

As I mentioned earlier, the $29.99 price tag makes the Roku Express a true bargain. The inclusion of an HDMI cord, which can be pricey if purchased at your local retailer, is a nice bonus.

Personally, I was able to secure my Roku Express on sale at Best Buy for $24.99. Keep an eye out for opportunities to get an even better deal. It was available for $19.99 during a holiday sale in December 2021 it seems that deals pop in and out from various retailers all the time.

If you buy a Roku Express, gone are the days of renting a cable box for a monthly fee. You can purchase one of these for each of your televisions or share it between multiple TVs.

Comparing it to a $10 monthly cable box fee, your Roku Express will pay for itself within three months.

Roku Express offers access to both free and paid streaming services and channels. You will be able to pick and choose your entertainment offerings. The hope is that youll find the total of these costs to be below what your cable company charged you.

Ill cover some of the options later on in the article.

Can I Still Get Roku Even If I Already Have A TV Provider Or Cable

Yes, you can! You dont need a TV provider to use Roku, but having one wont stop you from enjoying Roku itself.

As we mentioned above, you can still watch cable channels. Once you open the channel, Roku will ask for your satellite information. Input the latter and youre good to go.

Roku doesnt charge any additional fees to access your favorite cable channels or even premium ones that youre already subscribed to.

Tips On Choosing The Best TV Provider

You can find the best deal out there as long as you know what to look for. Here are a few quick tips to find the TV provider and plan thats best for your household:

    • Shop around: Make sure youre considering every provider in your area before narrowing down your options.
    • Consider bundling: Bundling home service plans with a single provider will almost always save you money. Youll also simplify your monthly bills.
    • Add in equipment fees: Surprise bills arent fun bills. Look at how many TVs youll need receivers for, if youll want DVR service and if add-ons are a necessity. All of these things will increase your monthly bill.
    • Check your channel lineup: Do a little digging on the channel lineup thats included with your plan instead of relying on the number . If your favorites arent included, it wont be worth the money no matter what.

    Cable Alternatives On Roku

How to set up Roku Streambar

Cord-cutting is popular, and with good reason – cable bills have become exorbitant, and we end up paying for dozens of channels that we never watch. For many people, though, there is no good alternative for popular cable channels like HGTV, Food Network, and Bravo. If you’re willing to pay for service but want to lower your bill, or you have high-speed Internet but you don’t have access to cable or satellite TV, the live TV streaming services discussed below are available on Roku and offer an alternative to traditional cable and satellite television.

Prices and channel lineups can and do change frequently, so check the providers’ websites for recent updates. Also, be aware that local channels and regional sports vary by location. If your selection of a live TV streaming service is based on the availability of a specific network affiliate or the ability to watch your local sports team, verify that these will be available at your specific location.

How Much Do You Have To Pay For Your Roku Device

Here, I have listed all the different variants of Roku devices in the increasing order of price, along with the various features and accessories that come with them:

    • Roku Ultra The 2020 model Ultra 4800R is currently the highest-end option available in their lineup. Unlike the other variants, the Roku Ultra has an Ethernet port and supports Bluetooth connectivity. It can stream not only in 4K but also in Dolby Vision.
    • Roku Streaming Stick Being the most portable device in this list, Streaming Stick is about the size of a flash drive and can be connected directly to the HDMI port of a television. It also has a remote wireless receiver and includes an enhanced voice remote control.
    • Roku Premiere Premiere is practically the same as Roku Express, except it can stream at 4K and looks slightly different.
    • Roku Express Being the cheapest available option, it can only stream at HD 1080p, not 4K. It comes with a simple remote control. This option is highly suitable for those new to using streaming media, looking for a backup device, or on a tight budget.
    • Roku Streambar Being another 2020 model, this is basically a cheaper and more compact version of the Smart Soundbar. However, one important difference is that it does not have a dedicated Ethernet port, which means you have to use a USB port to connect to the Ethernet adapter. A voice remote control is included.
