Samsung Finally Takes On Lg For Oled TVs
The worlds largest TV maker, Samsung, has finally got with the OLED program.
At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Samsung revealed a glimpse of a TV that uses a new type of OLED display known as Quantum Dot OLED , which might finally allow the company to compete directly with LGs highly prized OLED TVs.
The new displays, which Sony announced it will also be using in its upcoming A95K TV, take a blue OLED screen and then layer on top of it a thin film covered in quantum dots, which emit red and green colours where required to create the full-colour image.
Samsung and other TV makers already use similar quantum dot technology to improve the colours in their LCD TVs, and Samsung Display the Samsung subsidiary that will be making the screen for both Samsung and Sony argues its a better system than the technology used by LG in its OLED TVs, since the quantum dots produce colours that are more vibrant than the colour filters used by LG.
Details on Samsungs QD-OLED TV are scant, however. The company made no mention of it in its keynote address, which officially opened this years CES, nor was the TV mentioned in Samsungs press releases. The TV only came to light when it won a prize as one of the best products at the Las Vegas trade show.
Samsung Display, which is known to have been working on the technology for several years, did announce that the screens would be available in the first half of this year, however.
Is Qled Or Oled Better
Which is better? Which is brighter? It all depends on your budget, the location of the television, and your expectations of the quality of the picture. OLED offers better contrast, but is not suited to bright rooms. QLED has a flatter color palette and avoids the risk of burn-in. Both types have their advantages, but each has their drawbacks. Qled TV Picture Quality Varies More Than Oled
Samsung and TCL each have multiple QLED series and the most expensive ones perform a lot better than the cheaper ones. That’s mainly because the biggest improvements in the picture quality of QLED sets don’t have much to do with quantum dots. Instead they’re the result of mini-LED backlights, better full-array local dimming, bright highlights and better viewing angles, which help them outperform QLED TVs that lack those extras.
Meanwhile, every OLED TV I’ve reviewed has very similar image quality — all have earned a 10/10 in picture quality in my tests. There’s some variation among different OLED TVs, for example the LG A2 with its 60Hz panel compared to 120Hz on other OLED TVs, but they’re not nearly as significant as the differences between various QLED TV series.
What Will Replace Oled
The current king of televisions, the OLED, is being dragged down by a growing number of issues. First, it is too expensive to manufacture at scale, with limited manufacturing capabilities. Second, there is intense competition between LCD and OLED. Third, OLED manufacturers are turning their attention towards more profitable segments, like bigger sizes and 4K resolutions. So what will replace OLED? Lets look at some possible candidates.
The biggest drawback of the OLED is the price. The average OLED TV costs about 20% more than a high-performance LCD. Furthermore, theres no such thing as a budget OLED, so the technology is out of the reach of many consumers. Nonetheless, the benefits of the OLED are hard to ignore. Theyre definitely worth the extra money. The price, however, doesnt have to be high to be attractive.
Another notable feature of OLED TVs is their fast pixel response time. Pixel response time is the amount of time it takes for a pixel to change colors. OLED displays typically have response times of 0.2 milliseconds, a factor that is less than half that of LCD panels. This means faster images, especially in fast-paced scenes. OLED TVs also have a high contrast ratio, making them better suited for pairing with HDR content.

Why Is Lg The Only Oled Manufacturer
LG was the only company to invest billions of dollars in R& D and construct plants to manufacture them. Other businesses have opted to concentrate on LCDs, which can be manufactured more cheaply and in greater quantities. A Strategic Shift For Samsung In 2022

Samsung’s decision, thus, to use LG’s OLED panels will help with a “dual-track approach” for its OLED TV business. The report quotes an executive at Samsung’s local partner companies. The move will ultimately help Samsung bring down the cost of its TVs.
Samsung is expected to announce the transition to LG OLED panels “to top retailers and buyers” on the sidelines of CES 2022, which is due to begin on January 5. As per the report, the announcement is expected to come from Samsung’s Vice Chairman Han Jong-hee, who oversees TVs and mobile phone businesses.

When Did Samsung Stop Making Oled TV
It seems like theres always been a question about the future of OLED screens for TVs, but why did Samsung suddenly stop manufacturing them? As the market for LCD panels continues to decline, Samsung is struggling to make a profit. The companys Corporate Strategy Office felt that LCD technology was more profitable than OLED and was developing a cheaper, more efficient manufacturing process. Samsung has been stalling when it comes to the OLED technology for a while. They have a huge capacity for producing OLED panels and are already in the process of forming a partnership with LG. However, this isnt the only reason why Samsung hasnt been making OLED TVs. The company is working on QLED and micro-LED technology to dominate the premium market. Samsungs executives believe that these technologies will improve picture quality.
Is There Any Truth To The Rumors
To find out more about this potential deal, we spoke to Bob O’Brein of Display Supply Chain Consultants . His take? O’Brein says “I still believe that the rumored deals will not happen.”
He cited past rumors and a history of animosity between the two companies that have not only competed for TV shopper’s dollars, but have competed on features, technologies, and more. The biggest take away? It’s still pretty hard to believe that Samsung and LG would bury the hatchet after being intense rivals for many years.
“This particular deal seems doubtful because it goes against years of Samsung TV marketing” says O’Brein. Pointing to past marketing pushes that have called out flaws in OLED and QLED technologies, O’Brein doesn’t see them doing an about face any time soon.
“It would mean Samsung acknowledging the superiority of OLED for TV, which they have never done thus far.”

The battle between OLED and QLED is more of a story about branding than tech. Every single OLED panel found inside every single OLED TV is made by LG Displays, and every single QLED panel is made by Samsung.
Team OLED:
Most TV brands have lined up behind OLED over the past few years, believing it to be the superior technology for picture quality.
It’s hard to disagree, but despite LG, Sony, Panasonic, TP-Vision , Loewe, Bang & Olufsen, Skyworth, and ChangHong all now selling OLED TVs, they do tend to be very expensive despite the fact prices are improving a little.
The maker, LG Display, hasn’t been able to produce enough OLED panels fast enough to bring them in at a lower cost, which is making OLED TVs seem like a top-tier premium TV technology.
This has been changing, with new and smaller sizes. Brands like LG now have 48-inch and 42-inch sized OLED TVs on offer .
Increased production should help to drop prices too. Though Hisense has already ditched the technology, after a poorly-performing Hisense O8B OLED that didn’t quite make the best case for the technology.

Samsung abandoned its efforts to make OLED TVs in 2014 due to low production yields, and only started talking about QLED again back in 2017. It’s now trying to popularize the technology by getting other companies involved.

The Good News For Oled In 2022
This year, were seeing a few key developments in the OLED market that could help it become a better option for more people. For one, LG and Sony have continued to refine their panels to improve overall brightness, and both are adding more screen sizes to their lineups, including smaller 42- and 48-inch modelswhich is great for not only gamers but also anyone who just wants a more affordable OLED TV that fits in a modest-sized room. Also, companies like Vizio and Skyworth are selling more affordably priced OLED TVs in the US.
But the OLED news generating the most buzz is that Samsung is returning to the OLED game after almost a decade on hiatus. The company has a single OLED TV line this year, the S95B Series, but theres an important caveat: Samsung manufactures its own OLED panels, and S95B TVs have QD-OLED displays, a new variant of OLED. QD-OLED displays combine OLED panels with quantum dotsmicroscopic nanocrystals more commonly used to pump up the color saturation in the best LCD/LED TVs. Sony also announced a QD-OLED model this year.
Because QD-OLED is brand new, we dont yet know what benefits or improvements it may offer over LGs WRGB OLED panels beyond what can be assumed based on the underlying technologies: It should look really good. The other good news? Samsung has announced pricing for its QD-OLED TVs, and while theyre not the most affordable ones you can buy this year, they also wont break the bank compared with some of the premium OLED TVs being sold.
How Does Qled Work
QLED stands for Quantum dot Light Emitting Diode and was developed to try and replicate the very best picture quality features of OLED along with far superior brightness and colours. A QLED uses an LED backlight, a layer of quantum dots, an LCD matrix, and a colour filter to create an image.
The quantum dots in QLEDs are tiny semiconductor particles only a few nanometers in size. The dots convert white light into coloured light without loss of energy. The resulting colour depends on the size of the quantum dot itself larger ones give off light at the red end of the spectrum, smaller ones at the blue end.
In the future, engineers hope to make these semi-conductors self-emissive, like OLED and MicroLED technology but, right now, they rely on being lit from an external source.
The advantage of quantum dots is that they offer significantly improved colours over both traditional LCD and, arguably, even over OLED. At the same time, the backlight and energy efficiency of the dots creates brightness levels that OLED cant get close to. However, it still can’t achieve the deep blacks of an OLED as light can bleed from white areas to bordering dark pixels.

OLED technology is still at the heart of the new QD-OLED panels, and because of the self-emitting pixels, you can expect near-instant response times below 1ms, which is critical for gamers. As a result, you don’t experience ghosting on these displays during fast-motion scenes.
QLEDs, on the other hand, deliver sub-5ms response times, making them no match for these QD-OLED panels in terms of sheer motion clarity. And as for input lag, the new QD-OLED TVs match the competing OLED and QLED displays, so competitive gamers can rest assured that they aren’t making any sacrifices. Just make sure you use the dedicated game mode setting before booting up your console.
What Makes Oled TVs Special
The history of flat-panel TVs has been written by two fundamentally different technological approaches to creating a TV image: transmissive displays versus emissive displays.
Transmissive displays operate by shining a backlight array through a liquid crystal element. You might know them by their more common names: LCD TVs or LED TVs. Crucially, the light- and color-producing parts of LCD/LED TVs are functionally and physically separate layers. I like to think of the liquid crystal and backlight as the meat and cheese on a sandwich, respectively.
In emissive displays, those functions arent separated. Each pixel produces its own light and color, so theres no need for a backlight array. As you might have guessed, OLED TVs are emissive displays. For those who remember the brief reign of plasma as the must-have TV tech, plasma TVs were also emissive displays.
As a bonus, because theres no backlight array, OLED TVs tend to have excellent viewing angles, especially compared to LCD/LED TVs. This means you can watch them pretty comfortably from way off to either side.
