Stream Wirelessly Using Miracast
Miracast is one of those tech features that feels a bit like magic when you first discover it. Built into most recent versions of Android, Windows, and Linux, it lets you stream video and audio to the majority of smart TVs without needing a cable. It has been described as HDMI over Wi-Fi, which gives a pretty good idea of how it works.
Like an HDMI cable, Miracast mirrors your devices display on the television screen. The exact method for setting it up depends on both the TV and your devices operating system, but Ive outlined the general approach. below
To get it working, youll first need to switch your TVs input so it starts listening for an incoming connection. The input will likely be called Cast, Miracast, or something similar. My TV calls it Anyview Cast, for example.
To make the connection on Android, select Screen Cast from the Quick Settings menu, or go to SettingsBluetooth & device connectionCast. Ensure that Enable Wireless Display is checked in the hamburger menu, and you should see the television listed either by name or a generic phrase like Smart TV. Select it and wait a few seconds: all going well, a copy of your phones display will appear on the screen.
Windows has a similar approach. On Windows 10, click the Action Center icon on the right of the taskbar, then click Connect. Choose the television from the list of audio/video devices that appears, and wait a few seconds for the connection to be made.

Mirroring Your Phone To The TV
Another solution is to use the mirroring feature already on phones. This does vary slightly in name and process depending on the make of phone, although the feature largely works the same. While this will most often be described as Screen Cast or Screen Mirroring, Samsung phone owners may find the feature referred to as Smart View. Either way, the option is available as a settings tile in the menu on Android phones and through the Control Center on iPhone. The feature works in much the same way as casting from an app where once clicked, the videos or images are wirelessly sent to the TV from the phone. The major difference is there’s no need for an app with mirroring, but this also means there’s not much option to use the phone while casting as the entire phones screen is mirrored to the TV.
While the wireless approaches are the easiest way to connect a phone to a TV, they do come with one major caveat and that the two devices do need to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. So long as thats not an issue, there shouldnt be any issues either AirPlay-ing, casting, or mirroring your smartphone to your 4K TV.

Sometimes, your phone’s screen just isn’t big enough for viewing your photos and videos or playing games. Connecting your phone to your TV can be a quick and easy fix. I tested a number of solutions using phones from Apple, LG, Samsung, and Google, as well as TVs from Samsung and LG and various streaming devices. Here are the methods that work best for every combination of models.
Connect With An Adapter Or Cable
If you don’t have a Chromecast-compatible device, use an HDMI cable and adapter to connect your phone to your TV and mirror what’s on your screen. You have a few different options here, and which one you choose will depend on the type of display you’re connecting to, how long, andmost importantlywhether or not you’ll need to charge your phone while doing it.
The simplest option is a USB-C to HDMI adapter. If your phone has a USB-C port, you can plug this adapter into your phone, and then plug an HDMI cable into the adapter to connect to the TV. Your phone will need to support HDMI Alt Mode, which allows mobile devices to output video. This method will take up your charging port, unless your adapter has a charging port.
If you have an older Micro USB-style port, you will need a micro USB to HDMI adapter. With this method, your phone will need to support a different protocol called MHL. If you have a supported phone, hook it up to the adapter, then attach an HDMI cable and connect it to a TV.

Wireless Options: Miracast And Google Cast
Lets be honest here: its 2017, and no one likes to deal with wires or cablesespecially for transient connections. If you can connect your smartphone to your TV without even getting up off the couch, why would you not want to?
The good news here is that there a couple of different types of connections that allow just this: Google Cast and Miracast. Like MHL and Slimport, these are two means to the same end.
The primary difference between these wireless technologies and their wired counterpartsaside from the wiresis that instead of mirroring your phones entire display on the TV , you can pick and choose what is shown. For example, you can play Netflix or YouTube on the TV and still use your smartphone for other thingsit effectively just becomes a really expensive remote control.
The biggest downside is latency. If you plan on trying to play your phones games on the big screen, there will definitely be some lag between whats happening on the phone and what you see on the TV. Because of that, we dont really recommending using wireless connections for gaming. Go wired, instead.
Of the two technologies, Miracast is older. It was developed by the Wi-Fi Alliance as a way of replicating HDMI over Wi-Fi. While Miracast initially required the TV to have built-in Miracast support, many dongles are now available for you to add to any TV. Miracast is also the standard used in devices like , which we highly recommend if youre looking for a Miracast device.

Apple products have different requirements for screen mirroring to a smart TV and may require additional adapters or equipment.
Connect Using A Lightning
As is the case with Android phones, the most foolproof way to connect your iPhone to your TV is with an adapter that plugs into the Lightning port on your iPhone. Because buying Apple accessories is rarely as simple as it seems, however, there are a few things to keep in mind.
First, not all third-party adapters are guaranteed to work with your iPhone or certain content carrying HDCP copyright protection. For this reason, we recommend forking over the cash for Apple’s official Lightning to HDMI AV adapter. Its $49 price tag is indeed hard to swallow with so many cheaper alternatives flooding the market, but it’s also the most reliable option at your disposal, given the finicky relationship between Apple devices and third-party hardware.
In addition to needing a long enough HDMI cable to traverse the distance between your iPhone and the TV, several Lightning-to-HDMI adaptersincluding Apple’s official adapterneed to be plugged into a power source via a standard Lightning cable while in use.
