How To Listen To Apple Music On Amazon Fire TV

13 March 2019

Apple Music is now available on Amazon Fire TV. Sort of. It’s actually the Apple Music Alexa Skill ;the same as what you’d use to listen to Apple Music on an Amazon Echo speaker. And given that a Fire TV is basically an Alexa with a big-ol’ display attached to it, this kind of all makes sense. There’s no app, just the Alexa Skill. Here’s how to hook things up and listen to Apple Music on Amazon Fire TV:

Products used in this guide

  • Visit the Apple TV Alexa Skill in a browser or the Alexa app.
  • Sign in to your Apple Music account with your Apple ID.
  • Allow the Access Request.
  • Optional: You can choose Apple Music as the default music provider for Alexa, if you want.
  • Pick up the Fire TV remote, hit the mic button, and tell Fire TV to “Play Apple Music.”
  • That’s it. You’ll now be able to tell Alexa to play Apple Music on the Fire TV, just as you would an Amazon Echo speaker.

rturner2 said:It would be nice if Apple allowed the Apple TV screen content to mirror back to your phone so you could control Apple Music ie. listen to Apple TV via WiFi without using a phone or iPad via airplay. Which drains battery etc.Or if when using airplay for music from iphone and a track is selected, that Apple TV could stream the Apple Music song from WiFi and use the phone simply as a remote with an interface.Currently the Remote app is limited ie. cant visually select a new artist, playlist etc and its somewhat slow to respond especially on Apple Watch.

How?I thought this only controls music playing on my phone; not the music app on Apple TV.

bucksaddle said:If you are on 11.2.5 and have an Apple TV 4 or 4K then it does exactly what the OP is looking for. In the Music app on an iOS device click on the small AirPlay icon, then select the Apple TV device lozenge from the new device list and go back to your music library. It is now showing you browsing your music on the Apple TV where you can browse artist, albums, playlists, etc and when you select a track it will start playing directly from the Apple TV.No requirement to AirPlay from iOS device and the TV can be off.

And let me assure you this method is NOT AIRPLAY STREAMING

How To Control Video Playback In Apple Music Using Siri

Siri on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV knows what to do when you ask it to skip ahead, rewind, pause, and play a music video. Just ask.

    • “Hey. Siri. Play Prince – Let’s Go Crazy music video.”
    • “Hey, Siri. Pause.”
    • “Hey, Siri. Skip to the next music video.”
    • “Hey, Siri. Replay the music video.”

Asking Siri to start playing a music video is a bit tricky. Sometimes, it plays an audio track instead, but sometimes it understands and plays the video you asked for. I wasn’t ever able to successfully get Siri to play a music video on my Mac. All playback commands after the video starts work perfectly, though.

    Are There Any Alternatives

The obvious alternatives include: Spotify, YouTube Music, Amazon Music Unlimited and Tidal. There is no app to download to your Fire TV; instead, you need to link your accounts. If you have already linked your Apple Music account with Alexa, things should work without having to do anything. But if you havent linked things up yet, here is how to get started.

Open the Alexa app on your phone or tablet or head to alexa.amazon.com on the web. Then open the Settings menu and choose Skills & Games and search for the Apple Music app and enable the skill.

After enabling the Skill, you will need to link your Apple account with Alexa.

You also now have the option to make Apple Music your default Music service. If you dont change it right away, you can do it later by heading to Settings > Music > Default Services and change it to Apple Music. This is an important step, so Alexa knows to play music on your Fire TV from Apple Music. Otherwise, it will just use whatever service you have set as the default.

Now that your account is linked with Alexa, you can play Apple Music on your Fire TV. You can use your Fire TV Alexa remote to say: Alexa, play music or Alexa, play Metallica, and it will start playing songs from Apple Music on your TV. You can use the remote buttons to pause, play, and skip to the next song. Of course, having your account linked with Alexa will also allow you to play Apple Music on any Echo speakers you have, too.

    Stream Content With Home Sharing

Home Sharing lets you stream media. Even though the new Apple TV contains either 32GB or 64GB flash storage, you cant send files from your iTunes library to the device, as you could with the very first Apple TV, which synced content from your iTunes library. That device was more like an iPod in the living room; the current Apple TV pull media from your iTunes library, or from the cloud.

To use Home Sharing to access content from your iTunes library, select Computers on the Apple TVs home screen, and then select a library. If you have more than one computer running iTunes, and Home Sharing is active on each of them, they will all display here.

If you have more than one library available, you can select one here. If not, youll go straight to the content type list, as in the screenshot below.

Select a library, and youll then see the types of content available:

Browse the different types of content in your shared library.

Drill down through your music and videos, and choose what to play. If you dont have all of these media kinds in your iTunes library, the Apple TV will only display those available, though my MacBooks library shows a listing for Home Videos, even though I dont have any on that device.

Home Sharing has not been without problems over the years. Sometimes the Apple TV can no longer see your iTunes library. Ive had to do one or more of the following at different times to get Home Sharing to work again :

    Alexa Voice Command Tips

While Echo allows you to simply speak your commands, you will need to use the Alexa Voice Remote with your Fire TV.Hold down the microphone icon on the Alexa Voice Remote and ask for the song, album, artist, or other item you want to hear. You can also use the Alexa app directly.

Now you can take Apple Music for a spin through Alexa. Make requests for single tracks, entire albums, specific artists, and even radio station. Here are a few examples:

    • Alexa, play jazz on Apple Music
    • Alexa, play Rubber Soul by the Beatles from Apple Music
    • Alexa, play the soundtrack to Star Wars from Apple Music
    • Alexa, play Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 from Apple Music
    • Alexa, play Abbott & Costello’s Who’s on First’ from Apple Music.
    • Alexa, play Beats 1 from Apple Music
    • Alexa, play the Pure Pop station from Apple Music
    • Alexa, play the Spa station from Apple Music
    • Alexa, play Bloomberg Radio from Apple Music.”

The Alexa Voice Remote allows you to control Apple Music through voice commands or by pressing the physical buttons. Hold down the microphone icon and you can say “Pause,” “Play,” “Next song,” “Previous song,” and “Stop music.” Alternatively, press the buttons on the remote to control playback.

Reminder: You can omit saying “Apple Music” for each request if you set it as your default music service. Since you press a button on the Alexa Voice Remote, you also don’t need to say “Alexa” when interacting with a Fire TV device.
