Best TVs under $500

An increasing number of sets come with built-in Wi-Fi for connecting Internet-based services like Netflix for streaming videos or to run apps for watching special-interest programs, downloading on-demand movies, playing games or even posting to Facebook. The latest models can even search for content across streaming services and live programming on cable and satellite.

In the past, you could have bought a less expensive “dumb” TV and made it smart with a streaming device like the $50 Roku Streaming Stick. But nowadays, it’s hard to get a TV that isn’t smart, even if you’re going for a small bargain model. Find out more about the functions and features in our guide to smart TVs.

Bottom line: Smart capability is now a standard feature in TVs, so it’s less and less of a factor in your buying decision.

How To Buy The Best TV For You

What TV resolution do I need?

High-definition TVs currently fall into three categories: Full HD/FHD, otherwise known as 1080p, which has 1,920 x 1,080 pixels on the screen; Ultra HD/UHD, more commonly referred to as 4K ; and the highest of them all, 8K . These days, only the cheapest TVs utilise an FHD/1080p resolution. 4K is now the de facto standard for any self-respecting TV, offering four times the resolution of 1080p. Although 8K is gaining traction in the consumer market, its really not necessary to buy a TV with an 8K resolution just yet. Theyre expensive for one, and theres also barely any native 8K content out there. By and large, youll only be watching upscaled 4K content if you have an 8K TV in your living room.

What size TV should I buy?

The size of the TV you buy should be dictated not only by the size of your room but also by how far away you intend to sit from it. To get the full benefit from a 4K HDR set, you need to sit close enough for your eyes to appreciate the increased picture clarity that 4K brings over FHD. Buying a 4K TV thats too small for your room may mean that it wont look much better than a much cheaper 1080p TV.

Key Features To Look For

Connecting devices

Blu-ray/DVD players, media players and AV receivers or computers;all need to be connected in one way or another. You’ll need to decide the connection type and count the number of connections you’ll need.

New TVs typically only use HDMI. If you want to connect older equipment, you’ll need to buy converters that support classic connectors such as component and S-video . Converters are available in most electronics stores and online. Simply search for, or ask about, the conversion you require .

Recording shows and movies

Many TVs will now record shows. However, most TVs will only do it for the program they’re tuned to. Very few TVs have two tuners, allowing you to record one channel while you watch another. If you think one tuner is going to be enough for you it could help reduce the number of boxes in your TV room.;

Audio quality

Speaker performance is often overlooked when buying a television. While sound from the latest thin TVs is improving, you’ll generally get a better sound by adding a;soundbar. We’ve introduced a listening panel to our testing to get a better idea of the overall sound quality a TV can deliver.

Wall-mount or table top: which is best?;

Remote control

Make sure the more commonly used buttons can be located at a glance. If you have young children or an absentminded partner and your remote is likely to go missing, choose a TV with easily accessible controls on the TV itself.

Model number

Shopping For TV Sales

New TVs don’t usually hit shelves until spring or summer, so you’re looking at a solid three or four months where you know what new TVs are coming out. If you can find deep discounts for the previous year’s models in January, and you know they’re good performers based on our reviews, you should go for them.

Keep an eye out for sales around big sports events like the Super Bowl, or when football season is just starting. You might be able to find price cuts of a few hundred dollars or more. Like all sales, pay attention to which models are on sale; different tiers and series of TVs can have wildly different performance.

Huge price slashes on Black Friday often promote budget or midrange televisions with seemingly big discounts, but their pictures might not be nearly as good as higher-end models. Check the model numbers against the reviews for a good sense of whether the discount you see is worthwhile.

Which TV Brand Lasts The Longest

As long as you buy one of the recognized big name TV brands, the longevity of your TV is more dependent on the model and technology inside it than the brand. Most modern OLED TVs are rated for around 30,000 hours, which is enough to let you watch three hours of TV every day for over 27 years. LCD TVs can be rated for anywhere between 30,000 and 60,000 hours, so you’re certainly likely to buy a new TV before any of these sets finally stop working for good.

If you buy a brand that uses poor quality components or comes with a very limited warranty then you may find that your TV doesn’t last that long. Sticking to an established brand and focusing on the better models that company manufactures will guarantee that your TV lasts for many years to come.

Refresh Rate: Faster Is Better

The refresh rate, expressed in Hertz describes how many times per second a picture is refreshed on the screen. The standard refresh rate is 60 times per second, or 60 Hz. However, in scenes with rapidly moving objects, a 60 Hz refresh rate can make things look blurry or jittery, particularly on LCD HDTVs. So, to create a more solid picture, manufacturers doubled the refresh rate to 120 Hz .

Since there aren’t that many per-second images in original video content, TVs handle the faster refresh rates in different ways. One method is to simply insert black images between the original pictures, tricking the viewer’s eyes into seeing a less blurry, more solid picture. Another technique is to generate and insert new images showing a state of movement in between the two adjacent pictures to display more realistic-looking motion. However, depending on how the video-processing is done, it can make a movie or sitcom look flat, or as if it were a poorly lit, old-time soap opera.

A word of caution: beware of terms like “effective refresh rate,” which means the actual frame rate is half the stated rate . Everything else is done with video processing, not a refresh of the screen.

Bottom line: Gamers will get a lot from a 60Hz TV, but most TV shoppers shouldn’t buy a TV with less than a 120 Hz refresh rate.

What Is An Oled TV

Best Deals For Small Flat Screen TV For Kitchen ...

If you must have the best picture quality, then an OLED TV should be high on your shopping list.

OLED technology is relatively new to the mainstream TV market and is different from the display technology used by LED TVs.

It shouldnt be confused with the QLED TVs described above.

OLED stands for organic light-emitting diode. An OLED TV has an organic layer that emits light with an electric current.

Due to the way this technology works, these TVs can be very thin and light because there is no backlight.

The lack of a backlight also means that the contrast ratio is fantastic. The contrast ratio is the difference between the brightest whites and the darkest blacks which is very important to the perceived picture quality.

OLED TVs produce almost perfect black levels because when we remove the electrical current from a pixel, it goes black instantly.

The Advantages of An OLED TV

So, the main advantages of OLED televisions are:

  • Picture quality: perfect black levels for a fantastic contrast ratio
  • Viewing angles: excellent picture quality from any viewing angle
  • Low response times: great for fast-moving images
  • Power: low power requirements make it an excellent green option
  • Home theater: superb performance in a dark room for watching movies

The Disadvantages of An OLED TV

OLED TVs do have some potential disadvantages:

In most situations, image retention is unlikely to be permanent and will fade quickly. But this may prove annoying for some people.

How We Test TVs

Evaluating TVs is about more than just kicking back to watch a movie. We lab test every TV, measuring color gamut, color accuracy and brightness to objectively see which sets are the best for these key indicators. We also test for lag time a key detail for gaming measuring to the millisecond how long it takes for content to travel from the original source to the screen. We use these results to make numbers-based comparisons about color and display quality.

We also spend time with each set for real-world evaluation and see how our lab results translate into more subjective performance. We also compare sets side by side and view samples from the latest movies, specialized test patterns that highlight strengths and weaknesses of each display, and a range of content across several sources. With that information, we can tell you which TVs look best, sound best and offer the best viewing experience.

Finally, we evaluate the smart TV functions and apps for each TV, looking at everything from the remote control design to the voice interaction

What About Led Video Walls

This is where big screens get slightly confusing and really, really expensive. It’s also where TVs get much, much bigger than 75 inches. While LED TVs are just LCD TVs with LED backlights. LED video walls are a completely different technology. They use clusters of colored light-emitting diodes to form each pixel and light it up, like OLED. The good news about LED video walls is that they can get really big. The bad news is that they;have;to be really big, and that’s a very limiting factor if you want to fit a 4K picture in a certain space.

LED video walls are commonly used for digital signage. If you see a huge light-up sign that plays video on the side of a building, it’s probably an LED array. If you get close to it, like within ten feet, you can probably see the individual pixels from each relatively large LED cluster. They’re great for stadiums, but not for home theaters.

That’s changing with miniaturized LEDs, like Samsung’s;microLED video wall;and Sony’s Crystal LED wall. These newer video walls have pixel pitches of 0.8 to 1.2mm, which means the pixels are small enough that you can sit comfortably black and not notice the individual lights. They’re still huge pixels compared with LCD and OLED TVs , but they’re much smaller than the big commercial signs with lights as big as your fist.

How To Calibrate Your TV

Projector vs Flat Panel TV? Which is right for you?

Most modern TVs are accurate enough out of the box that they don’t need calibration. Just follow our 5 Simple Tweaks to Get the Best Picture Settings for Your TV and you’ll be good to go.

Still, if you spent a lot on your new TV, you still might want to get it calibrated to really get the best picture possible. Professional calibrations can cost hundreds of dollars, but if you have a high-end home theater it can be a worthwhile expense. You can also use the Apple TV’s new Color Balance feature, though it doesn’t come close to a professional calibration.

And, of course, don’t forget to turn off motion smoothing unless you’re watching sports.
