The vertical format of IGTV videos can be confounding to newcomers, but that doesnt mean you should disregard it.

Because theyre shot vertically, the videos are extremely easy to upload and share, and dont require much equipment to put together.

That also means that marketers can bypass some of the planning and editing tasks you might apply to your YouTube videos. As such, the platform is ideal for engaging with fans in a more conversational way than you would, say, on a longer YouTube tutorial.

That said if youre creating videos that hit the upper limit of the platforms time constraints, that off-the-cuff Stories-type vibe might not make the cut.

If you thought you’d never be able to make your own TV series, think again.

Well, it’s IGTV. Which is kinda like TV, except it’s on Instagram, which, if you think about it, is basically tiny TV. Forget writing out a whole pilot and pitching it into the digital void hoping that by some semblance of a miracle it gets noticed by somebody important and they actually like it enough for a TV network to spend who-the-hell knows-how-much money to cast, produce, and broadcast it.

Yeah, forget all that. You can make your own series on IGTV. Here’s how.

Still, one of the bigger barriers preventing brands from adopting IGTV may come down to a simple matter of formatting. Unlike traditional video platforms like YouTube, IGTV uses a vertical format, making it difficult to reuse content from other platforms in your cross-channel strategy.

How Do You Create A Channel

IGTV HOW-TO: Editing Vertical Videos & What to Post on Instagram TV!

IGTV sounds excellent, but to participate, youll need to create a channel. Creating a channel is not difficult, but will require a few extra steps. It will also require you to master another set of features on Instagram, so youll want to make sure you are comfortable with how Instagram works before venturing out into the wild of Instagram TV.

To create a channel, you will need to first sign up using the IGTV app.

Next, you will want to log into the app with your account and click the settings gear icon in the right-hand corner. When you have that open, you can then click create a channel. That is all there is to it.

You can now start creating videos!

If you want to upload a video, youll need to go to your channel page, and there you will see a button in the right-hand corner that will allow you to add a vertical video to your channel from your camera roll. At this point, you can add a title and description to your video. You can also include links here. These links can take users outside of the app.

If your video features a new product, for example, you could link to your store and users would be able to click the link and be taken to your storefront outside of the app.

Can You Add A Link To A Post Natively

Yes and no. You can add a link to a caption on a post but no one will be able to click it. So if someone wanted to visit the URL you added, they would have to copy and paste it into their phones web browser. Its possible, but its a hassle.

That is why many people utilize the link option available in your bio. After adding the desired link to their bio, they simply tell their users where to access the URL by ending their posts caption with link in bio.

Heres how to update your Instagram bio link:

  • Open Instagram.
  • Fill in the rest of the details for your ad.
  • Finally, tap Create Promotion.
  • Like Story Ads, Promoted Posts can cost anywhere from $1 for one day to $1,000 for 30 days. You get to choose what you pay in the Budget and Duration tab.

Best Practices For Filming Vertical Video

Influencers and brands who want to maintain a distinguished look will generally steer clear of filming with their smartphones. Given this, the vertical video format of IGTV can pose an issue, as professional video equipment was not built with the format in mind.

    Video Camera

Video cameras are designed to film in horizontal widescreen, but with a little ingenuity, you can hack the system.

One way to do this is to turn your video camera 90 degrees. Your cameras software will upload the footage in horizontal wide-screen, so in post-production, your editor will have to rotate the video to leave it permanently vertical.

If you dont have the resources for an additional camera to film vertically, you can edit your footage in post-production to fit vertically, albeit by cutting off the sides and focusing solely on your subject.

    Smartphone

No matter how good your smartphones camera is, you’ll never come close to the image quality of a dedicated video camera. If thats ok with you, then you may want to invest in a smartphone with a top-of-the-line camera. Yes, it can be a hefty investment, but its a smartphone it does serve additional purposes.

If youre looking to get even closer to video camera quality, you can check out attachable lenses. Attachable lenses will run you $20-$100, but if used properly, they’re well worth the investment.

Make A Video With Insta Stories

One of the newly added features on Instagram is the Instagram Stories . This feature which came in full swing in 2016 is now one of the popular methods to post videos on Instagram. With Insta Stories, you can make videos at the spot like in method #1 or upload already recorded video like in method #2. The videos uploaded to Insta Stories have their own specs, namely they have a maximum length of 15 seconds and last for only 24 hours. Through this method, Instagram users can post music clips, movies, and a photo slide show without having it appear on that profile or feed. Your followers will have to click on their Insta Stories to see your uploads in the last 24 hours. Posting a video to your Insta Story is just as easy as the aforementioned methods. Uploading recorded videos follow the same steps as in method #2.

For creating on-the-spot videos, simply follow these steps to have a seamless experience using Insta Stories.

    • Of course, you will have to log into your account if it is not already open on the device.
    • Once located, tap and hold the record button until you are done recording your video.
    • Be sure to enable sound while recording if you want sound with your video. You can also make a no-sound-video. Simply disable the sound icon while recording.
    • Users are also given the opportunity to edit their videos and add caption through Insta Stories.
    • And you are good to go!
