Apple’s TV App Is On Roku Fire TV And Samsung But Only Apple Devices Get Every Feature

Looking for online Technical help and support for how to ...

The home of Apple TV Plus is slightly different on every device.

The Apple TV app on Fire TV and Roku.

Apple has its own app for streaming TV shows and movies, and in typical Apple fashion the name is dead simple: It’s called the TV app. But how it works can be surprisingly complex.

One basic thing about the app is the same on every device: You’ll need it to stream Apple TV Plus, Apple’s Netflix rival that launched Nov. 1 with exclusive shows such as See, a fantasy epic starring Jason Momoa, The Morning Show, a workplace drama starring Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston, and For All Mankind, an alternate history of NASA. There’s no separate Apple TV Plus app — subscribers have to watch those shows within the Apple TV app itself. But the app offers more than just Apple TV Plus and its paltry nine launch-day shows. And that’s where things begin to get complex.

In addition to Apple devices — iPhones, iPads, Mac computers and the Apple TV streaming box — the Apple TV app is also available on Roku and devices as cheap as $30. It’s also available on Samsung Smart TVs and, coming “in the future,” TVs from LG, Sony and Vizio.

Confused? Here’s how it all breaks down, in table and Q& A form.

When Is The TV App Coming To Other Devices

What is AirPlay? Apple Support

Available on every device with the TV app, this feature allows users to watch content from a variety of partners, including HBO, Starz, Showtime, Cinemax, Epix, Smithsonian Channel, Sundance Now, Lifetime Movie Club, Urban Movie Channel and Tastemade.

You watch from within the TV app itself, with no additional apps, accounts or passwords required. Instead of being bounced out to the HBO Now app, for example, you can watch your Succession episode within the Apple TV app itself. Up to six family members can also share Apple TV channels subscriptions via Apple’s Family Sharing feature using their Apple ID and password. You can also download TV shows and movies from channels to an iPhone or iPad.

All of the devices with the Apple TV app also let you subscribe to and pay for channels from directly within the TV app. The exception once again is Fire TV, which only lets you watch channels you’ve subscribed to elsewhere.

Except for Fire TV, you can subscribe to channels directly within the TV app, and after a free one-week trial, the monthly subscription price is the same as elsewhere.

Can You Even Hear Lossless Audio

Lossless audio is not a new concept, and has in fact been supported via iTunes and the Apple Music app for Mac for years now. There is some controversy over lossless audio, and there are quite a few people out there who are unable to hear the difference between lossy audio and uncompressed lossless audio files.

There are also other considerations to take into account, such as the quality of the device that you’re listening to music on. Lossless audio is designed for audiophiles and most people will not miss lossless quality on their HomePod, AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max.

Mdm Restrictions For Apple TV Devices

You can restrict certain features of Apple TV. Restrictions can be enabled, or in some cases disabled, to prevent users from accessing a specific app, service, or function of the device. Restrictions are sent to devices in a restrictions payload, which is attached to a configuration profile. For example, you can enable a restriction that prevents an Apple TV from pairing with the Remote app on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

Note: Not all restrictions are available in all MDM solutions. To learn which MDM restrictions are available for your devices, consult your MDM vendors documentation.

The following restrictions are available for Apple TV devices.

So What’s This About Airplay And Homekit

In addition to the Apple TV box, select smart TVs from LG, Samsung, Sony and Vizio also support Apple’s AirPlay 2 standard, allowing users to control video and music using their iPhone, iPad or Mac devices.

That’s not the case for Roku and Fire TV devices. Those platforms lack AirPlay support.

LG, Sony and Vizio TVs also have HomeKit support. The HomeKit integration lets users control the TV and their other smart home products using Apple’s Home app or by talking to Apple’s Siri digital assistant. Viewers can use their iPhones and iPads to turn their SmartCast TVs on or off from the Home app, change volume and switch inputs, and ask Siri via the iPhone and iPad to play movies, TV shows or music with AirPlay 2.

Why Is It Not Compatible On Older Models

While LG is constantly working to update all devices to the latest technology, newer apps often require the benefit of technology not available on older devices. However, you can still stream the Apple TV App on other compatible devices that are connected to your TV. A complete list can be found at apple.com/apple-tv-app/devices

Dickinson starring Hailee Steinfeld is now in its second series, while Physical with Rose Byrne, Mythic Quest and Schmigadoon are all relatively new shows on the platform.

Other projects that the streamer now has include:

Swift Zwift Tip: Changes to Zwift AppleTV Device Pairing // Companion App Pairing

When Apple first announced the launch of its own television streaming service, Apple TV+, it surprised many that this wasn’t just limited to the best iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV boxes. In fact, the Apple TV app would be available on a large variety of television sets and even other streaming devices, such as Roku, as well as consoles, allowing you to watch Apple’s exclusive content on non-Apple products.

It is important to note that not every television or device supports it, though. The oldest television that natively supports the Apple TV app goes back to 2018, though you can get it with some AirPlay 2-enabled TVs going back to 2016. Other streaming devices go back to about 2017, and last-gen and current gen consoles are also supported. Here is a full list of what TVs have Apple’s TV app.

Wait Only Apple Gets Dolby Vision And Dolby Atmos

Yep. Dolby Vision HDR video and Dolby Atmos object-based surround audio, two of the most advanced AV formats, are only available via the Apple TV App if you use an Apple TV 4K.

On the other hand no other current devices that support Dolby Vision and Atmos — including Roku TVs like the TCL 6-Series, certain and the and the — will stream content, including iTunes movies, in those formats via the Apple TV app. Other apps on those devices, for example Vudu or Movies Anywhere, might stream the same content in Dolby Vision or Atmos however. It depends on the device and the app.

Meanwhile Samsung TVs don’t support Dolby Vision at all. Whether forthcoming Dolby Vision-capable smart TVs from Sony, Vizio and LG will get that support in the Apple TV app is an open question. And Dolby Vision support might be added to non-Apple devices in the future.

.Confirmed by Amazons rep, regarding Apple TV app on Fire TV, that “Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos will not be supported at launch, but were working with Apple to add additional support for this type of content in the future. Both are supported by the Apple TV 4Ks app, natch.

What Is Lossless Audio

Apple upgraded its entire streaming music catalog to lossless audio using the ALAC format. ALAC is a lossless compression format that lets Apple make smaller file sizes without impacting the integrity of the original audio recording.

Lossless means that after compression and then decompression, the audio that you’re hearing is identical to the audio as it was recorded by the artist, preserving the texture, detail, and sound that went into the music when it was created.

With lossless audio, Apple Music subscribers can listen to songs exactly as the artists recorded them in the studio and intended them to be heard.

The Cheapest Route To Apple TV+

Set up your HomePod, Apple TV, or iPad as a home hub ...

The cheapest way to get Apple TV+ on your TV is with either the Roku Express or the new Amazon Fire TV Stick Lite. Both these devices are affordable, but only support up to 1080p streaming.

If you are connecting to a TV that only supports Full HD then that’s no problem, you won’t be missing out, making either of these devices a great choice for a second TV or a bedroom TV. The Roku Express is a small box that connects via cable to your TV’s HDMI input.

It comes with an IR remote – so you need line of sight – but it’s very easy to navigate the interface and there’s support for a wide range of TV services beyond Apple TV – Netflix, Amazon Video, BBC iPlayer, Now TV, Hulu, HBO Now and more depending on your region. The downside is that it doesn’t support HDR.

Alternatively, the plugs straight into your TV giving you access to a wide range of services. Naturally it’s designed for Amazon’s content first, but also supports Netflix, Apple TV and a lot more.

Coming from Amazon it supports Alexa too, meaning you can use voice searching right from the remote. While it’s also 1080p only, it does support some HDR formats.
