What About The Cost Of The Internet

Cable TV – Who Provides The Best Paid Cable TV Service for Non-Cord Cutter? #CutTheCordAlready

Admittedly, watching TV without cable does typically require the use of high-speed internet or mobile data . So, the biggest assumption here is that youll be saving the most money if you already pay for the internet.

If thats the case, cutting cable and using the internet youre already paying for to stream these services will save you money.

However, if you dont already have internet and you want to cut the cord on cable, make sure you do your math first.

The average internet bill is about $50 per month, but can range from $10 to $120 depending on the speed you choose, what company you use, and if you get an introductory offer that lowers the bill temporarily.

With this in mind, make sure you factor in the cost of the internet plus any of the plans above. Depending on what you were paying for cable, it may or may not be worth it to switch.

Amazon Prime Video: Best Value

  • Easy rentals

Something is always on

The one pleasant discovery with Amazon Prime Video is that there is a deep archive of content. You won’t find as many brand new original shows and movies, although they do debut fairly often. However, we dug a bit deeper and found Arrow and Flash, a few old John Wayne western movies, and several British dramas.

Easy rentals

Amazon Prime Video is part of the overall Amazon and Amazon Video ecosystem. That means you can easily rent or purchase new release movies and shows from the same interface. It also means that, once you have an Amazon Prime account, you can order Blu-Ray discs for movies like the True Grit remake that are not available in 4K otherwise. Been there, done that.

Why Did My Monthly TV Service Bill Increase

There are two reasons your monthly bill might increaseyour promotional pricing has expired, or if you didn’t sign a contract, some companies are subject to increase their service by pennies.

For example, when you get DIRECTV, you’ll receive a promotional price for the first 12 months, and then your monthly price will increase in year two.

It’s definitely not good for your blood pressure, but if you’re careful, it shouldn’t come as a surprise. Make sure to ask about any price changes that may happen after your promotional period ends so that you’re not blindsided with a giant bill.

Best Value: Prime Video

  • Limited original content
  • Less essential as a standalone service

If you like on-demand movies to go with your Amazon Prime free shipping, Prime Video is tough to beat: there are over 18,000 movies available on Prime Video, and most of them stream free with Prime membership. And you thought you were awestruck by Netflix .

Amazon may be doubling down on original programming ambitions , but live TV, not so much.

Prime Video does offer live TV streaming of select NBA and NFL games , but its still largely an on-demand service. We think its a killer value, considering what you get for $12.99 a month .

Hulu + Live: Live Offering

  • Small screen viewer

Find movies quickly

One feature that sets Hulu + Live apart is how quickly you can find movies. The app splits streaming content into categories for sports, news, kids programming, and movies. With one click, you can find all movies playing right now on live television. Hulu + Live offers 65 channels including FX, AMC and TCM so there is quite a nice selection of basic cable movies. We found Sleepy Hollow, Snatched, and Logan in about two clicks.

Live television preview

Hulu + Live shows a small window for live television at all times, although you can easily hide the preview. As you are looking for shows and movies, you can click any live television channel and see what’s on right then. We like being able to see this sample and decide if we really want to lean back and watch that channel, popcorn optional. If you do want to watch a show, it’s a simple click on the maximize options.

Is Cutting The Cord Worth It

The first thing to consider is whether your current cable deal is super amazingly cheap. If, by some miracle, youre paying less than $100 per month for everything you want, it may be worth sticking with your current plan. Chances are, since youre reading this piece at this very second, you are notespecially when you factor in those nasty hidden cable costs for things like equipment, broadcast, and regional sports fees. In this case, cutting the cord will most probably save you cash.

Youll still need a home Internet connection, which may now be part of the cable bundle, so figuring out how much it will cost as a standalone service is also important. Many times, the broadband Internet service is at least half of what youre paying for cable as a wholeso lets say youre paying $120 per month, it may be just $60, and you can spend the rest of those savings on the specific streaming TV services you want. You can also shop around for other broadband dealsbut make sure to check if youre under contract for your current plan before you do so.

Ready It’s Time To Cancel Your Cable Service

After you’ve lived with streaming for a while and have grown comfortable with the process of clicking on an app rather than firing up your cable box, it’s time to make the fateful call. Your cable provider might offer you incentives to stick around and you’ll have to weigh those against the benefits of cutting the cord, but do so carefully. Especially if the offer is contingent on signing a two-year contract. A lot can change in two years and with the freedom of streaming, it’s simply a lot easier to save money than with cable.

In the end, cutting cable TV isn’t for everyone. No single device or service has as many channels as a premium cable package. Juggling different services to find the shows you want to watch can be more effort than some people are willing to put in.

On the other hand, cutting cable is getting easier with every new option that hits the market. Beyond the savings, you get the freedom of being able to pick and choose the service you want — and drop it like a hot potato if you don’t like it anymore, your favorite show ends or something new comes along. Cutting cable is all about choice and if you do it right, you’ll never miss that old cable box.

How Much Money Are We Saving By Cutting Cable TV

Best Cable TV Alternatives || This or That

Like many people, when we had cable, we werent watching enough TV enough to get our moneys worth. So, that money was just being wasted on cheap cable tv. It was actually rare for us to watch something that wasnt on a local channel or Netflix. This was the main reason for why we decided to cut the cord and learn how to watch TV without cable or satellite, and I cant imagine that we will ever pay for cable again.

The other thing about paying for cable and streaming cable is that our cable company seemed to have a $10 to $20 increase multiple times throughout the year thats just insane! I used to have to talk to our cable company once every six months so that I could negotiate our cable bill down. If we would have never negotiated, Im sure our monthly cable bill would have been well over $100 and near the $200 range.

Now that we have cut the cord and only have Netflix, we are saving over $1,200 per year.

All we pay for now is $12.99 to Netflix each month, and we often turn that off when we feel like theres nothing good to watch .

I cant believe we ever paid that much for TV when there are so many cable TV alternatives.

Free Cable Alternatives In Canada

If youre into saving as much money as possible, utilizing free options might be right up your alley. Unfortunately, good free options in Canada are somewhat few and far between. We did locate one free option that you can view in Canada.

Crackle is a Sony-owned online streaming website with a small library for TV shows and movies. Adweek called Crackles content library mediocre in 2010, but we found that times have changed. Although the service still has under 1,000 TV shows and movies available, it includes highly-rated content, all for free. Sony supports the service through ads inserted into all of the available content as well as some on-page ads.

Youll find hit shows like 1990s sitcom Seinfeld available through this service, as well as top-rated movies like Stephen Kings It . Sony has a large list of partnerships with other content makers, including Disney, 20th Century Fox, Paramount Pictures, and anime company TOEI. These partnerships allow the service to offer more than just Sony-branded content.

Even though the service is free, you can find new, original content as well. As a free service, Crackle doesnt have a large budget to produce original content at the same level as Netflixs Stranger Things or Amazon Primes Man in the High Castle. Nevertheless, the fact that you can watch quality programming for free these days is pretty amazing in and of itself.

  • Recommendations
  • Pause and resume content across different devices
  • Premiere alerts.

Install A TV Antenna For Local Channels

One way to get around the high cost of local networks on streaming is to use an antenna. To qualify as a television, and not a monitor, a display needs to have an over-the-air tuner built-in, so you can plug in an antenna and watch broadcast networks like ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC and PBS. Reception varies widely depending on where you live, however, and unless you buy an antenna DVR like the Fire TV Recast, AirTV or TiVo Bolt OTA, you’re restricted to live-only viewing.

Over-the-air antennas are affordable and easy to install.

Is Cord Cutting Actually Cheaper Than Cable?

Cable is too expensive, but it’s not useless it’s just overpriced. Most of us are at least a little reluctant to part with cable, because we like TV. But here’s a harsh truth: if you want every last drop of content cable offers, and want it in the exact way that they offer it, then you should not cancel cable.

If, however, you’re willing to settle for some or even most of the good stuff cable offers, plus a whole lot of new perks that you never even knew you could ask for, then cord-cutting is for you.

One of the great things about cord-cutting is that you get to decide what to use to replace cable. You can choose one solution or mix and match or just go listen to the radio instead it’s all up to you. But that means we need to figure out which direction we want to take with all of this.

So now’s the time to ask: what do you like about cable? What do you like to watch?

Here are a few things that you may miss about cable:
