How To Decorate A Large TV Wall

Ive sung the praises of The Frame tv, that has all kinds of art you can display on the screen of a tv when it is not in use and I think these are a great solution, especially above fireplaces.

The Frame TV – Looks like framed art when not in use. You can select between lots of art and images, or upload your own for a customized look.

However, sometimes the tv is rather low, the wall is particularly high or wide, and it is hard to know what to do with the rest of that wall.

Im not really a fan of intentionally setting up a layout on the wall that uses the tv as a part of the art wall. In other words, I dont love it when I see art carefully place around a tv.

Sometimes theres just not much you can do though, so if I recommend this situation to anyone, its with much care and experimentation first, like Im about to show you.

Really, most times Id love to recommend a big tall cabinet of some kind, but there arent very many out there these days!

I Understand The Benefit Of The Low TV Console

Its not as an expensive furniture piece, generally, and it allows for flexibility with the size of your tv. You can also take it with you when you move, which is nice.

Ive had clients give me the size of their tv, knowing we would be scaling built-ins or whatever around them and then all of a sudden, when it came time for installation, a new tv would show up on the doorstep.

Mounting your TV on the fireplace creates a visual focal point, and will prevent those two elements from competing and clashing for attention in your space. You can also use floating shelves to display smaller framed pieces. This will help you add color and will spice things up on your fireplace wall compared to the traditional TV stand-focused ones.

a. Soften the transition: Here the softness of the window treatments helps ease the transition from TV to wall/window, and repeating the black and white color scheme ties everything together.

c. Create a gallery wall: Gallery walls are a fun way to decorate around the TV and display a collection of your favorite photos or artwork at the same time.

d. Add shelves: Adding the shelves brings another level of interest to a gallery wall and the stained wood ties it together with the console.

e. Build a niche: So clever to combine the feel of built-ins with the more interesting look of your favorite entertainment console, chest or hutch for a unique look.

Consider The Proper Angle For Viewing Led/lcd Televisions

When trying to relax and watch our favorite shows, we all want the best possible viewing conditions. The first thing to consider is the angle at which most modern LED/LCD televisions, especially the older plasma model TVs, have a limited angle at which the picture is clearly seen.

If youve ever looked at flat-screen television from a different angle, rather than head-on, eye-level, then you know exactly what we mean. There are newer OLED model televisions that dont have this problem, but we wont cover those in this article.

So, now to find out how far back to put a couch or recliner chairs away from a TV hung over the fireplace. Using the television mounted above our 75-inch fireplace, where the center of the flat-panel screen is approximately 7-feet above the floor.

Our goal was to determine how far away we must sit from the tv mounted above the mantle not to need to lookup. Our reason for doing this is to avoid getting neck pain. Anyone whos ever watched a whole movie from the front row of a movie theater can understand why this is important!

A Bigger Wider TV Of Course With All The Bells And Whistles :

I definitely realize that and size all my built-ins for tvs somewhat larger, just in case they want to go bigger on down the road. After all, technology changes and with all the tv watching we do, especially these days while staying home so much, why not keep up to date with your television viewing equipment?

The one problem I see with all this is that especially on light colored walls, the big black screen, when not turned on, can create a big void in the room. Not only that, I think it tends to look a bit unfinished and temporary.

Use Only An Appropriately Sized Anchor For Your Specific Setup

Tiff’s Tips – Hanging a TV Above the Fireplace | HGTV Smart Home (2020) | HGTV

We cannot recommend the correct size because every home has a unique fireplace and hearth setup. So what works at your neighbors house may very well not work for your home.

Youll want to use multiple right-sized anchors 4-inches is usually good. Just remember youre attaching a heavy object to a structure that MIGHT not be as sturdy as sheetrock and 2×4 wall.

Remember, youre bolting the television to a single wall of brick, NOT the chimney.

Another thing to remember is that this project requires more than your standard drill and drill bit set. Here are a few tools youll likely need to mount a tv above a fireplace: Anchors, a hammer drill, a high-impact drill and bits, and a dry shop vacuum.

Dont let common sense mislead you when choosing your mounting anchors

When planning this project, youll likely consider the weight of a big-screen television. It might even SEEM like a great idea to use extra-long anchors to make sure your fireplace tv is mounted in the brick or wall solid enough that it wont shift or fall out. However, that common sense is misleading in this case. Allow us to explain:

First, while there may be times when it works, if youre not familiar with the inner workings of your fireplace and chimney, then we advise you NOT to use extra-long anchors unnecessarily. When doing so, youd run the risk of causing damage to a structure this is difficult and costly to repair.

Consider The Seating Requirements For Comfortable Viewing

We know hanging your TV above the fireplace or mantel is a trendy thing to do these days, but before grabbing your drill and a new mount, perhaps the best place to start is asking yourself this question:

Do you really want the television above eye level?

If so, youll need to determine if your fireplace room is large enough to accommodate this arrangement for comfortable screen viewing?

If youre not sure, test it out. Thats what we did, and we go into detail about those test results below.

Try An Eclectic TV Gallery Wall Of Neutral Pieces

Who says that you cant have your TV hanging in front of your wall decor? Feel free to overlap your TV in front of an eclectic gallery wall the way that The Honeycomb Home did here:

Having A Custom Built

You may also try having a special custom built-in unit for your room. Not only will it help everything look right in your space, but you can also incorporate having a cabinet or a shelf with it which can act as storage space. Remember to leave a few spaces for some modern art pieces or whatever style you want to go for! Another awesome idea is having a custom hidden panel to cover your television with art when not in use. This exact setup was used by UGallery client, Andy. Check out his story here.

Bonus: Things You Should Avoid

TV decor, TV wall decor, Picture ledge above tv

When decorating your entertainment space, we sometimes get overwhelmed and make some mistakes. Lucky you, we have listed those things so you can avoid them. Here are some of the things you should not do when decorating your TV wall:

  • Hanging your TV too high. Its so obvious, yet not all of us pay much attention to it. Your TV shouldnt be hanging too high up on your wall. If you have a TV console, hang your artwork a few inches on top of itaround 6 to 12 inchesdepending on its size.

  • Buying a TV stand or console that is too small. Another common mistake is buying your stand without considering the size of TV or art pieces that youll put on top of it or on the wall behind it. Make sure its wider than your TV so that the television doesnt look top heavy.

  • Putting too much art around it. Yes, its nice to put a few pieces or even set up a gallery wall. However, see to it that you arent making the space overcrowded. A few dramatic pieces to disguise your TV will do.

Choosing a smart focal point in the room, like the fireplace entertainment area, is also a great way to create a multi-functional living area to promote conversation. Instead of making the television the sole focal point of the room, consider arranging your furniture in a way that will foster conversation rather than having all of your guests facing directly toward the TV.

If you dont like the dark, blank space a TV takes up, try getting one that display art when in sleep mode, like Samsungs The Frame TV. The Samsung Frame allows your TV to appear as a customizable art piece when you are not using it, explains Kazimierski. You can find a piece that inspires you and design the rest of the wall/fireplace around it, but I would still recommend using neutral paint on the wall in case you decide to change the art from time to time.

If youre looking for a more high-tech solution, you can add a mechanized panel that rises and falls to hide and expose the screen with the touch of a remote-control button or even a projector that you can hide away when youre not watching television.

  • Frame Your TV To Help It Fit Into Your Gallery Wall

Some people also prefer to have a customized or DIY frame for their TV. This is specific to flat screen TVs that are wall-mounted. It helps it blend well with whatever kind of artwork you wish to put on your TV wall. When you have a visitor coming over, you can even display an art piece or photo slide show through your TV!

Build Out A Mixed Media Wall

Another TV wall decor idea? Using mixed media decor around your televisionfrom framed art to ceramics, decorative objects, vases, and plants. Have your TV sit on the console, then have art and decor sitting around it. In this way, the TV becomes part of the wall decor instead of an eyesore and focal point. Choosing a single color schemein this case, blues and whiteswill help the space feel eclectic but not chaotic.

And if you have a long stretch of walls, consider putting two identical consoles side-by-side to create an asymmetrical mixed media set-up in your living room. By having the television on one side and floating shelves on the other, it makes the whole wall appear like one displaycreating a streamlined and continuous look instead of feeling blocky. The shelves also offer extra storage and display space. Having this set-up gives you more surface area to create a mixed media wall and helps the TV integrate into the space even more so than using just a single console with mixed media decor.

    This is perfect for

A variety of living roomsthose with long and large walls, for a space that needs extra storage, or for living rooms that are narrow or with high ceilings.

Six Degrees Of Separation From A Beautiful Picture

How to install TV above BRICK Fireplace STEP by STEP

On this issue, there is no debate. We review many TVs every year, and the viewing angle on LED/LCD TVs remains a problem, even among top-tier TVs.

An LCD screen is essentially made up of many tiny, shuttered windows. These windows open and close to let the TVs backlight through, thus creating an image. The problem with these windows is that they have a minimum viewing angle. Suppose you move too far left, right, up, or down and you start seeing a fraction of the produced light. The result is a washed-out, lifeless picture hardly what you had in mind when you laid out hard-earned cash for a new television.

The good news here is that you have some options to mitigate this problem. The first is to buy a tilting wall mount with enough down angle to give you a more direct view of the screen. Even mounts will drop the TV down closer to your eye level . Either option will improve both color saturation and contrast.

The second option is to purchase an OLED TV , which has a nearly infinite viewing angle and will look amazing no matter how high you place the TV. There are plenty of other reasons why OLED wins in an OLED vs. LED TV battle. If an OLED TV isnt an option for you, consider an LED TV that uses an IPS LCD panel.

    Create A Mixed Media Gallery

Heres another take on a mixed media TV wall design ideas: incorporating your TV on the wall with other pieces, making it fully part of the mixed media gallery. The use of a mirror and framed art helps the TV mix into the gallery in a more cohesive way, giving your TV a more discreet look. In this case, we used a smaller wall-mounted TV, which seamlessly blends in with the other piecesbut a larger TV would work, too.

In the room above, we centered the gallery wall above a cabinetbut you could also have the gallery be free-floating if you dont have the floor space for a media cabinet or dont need the additional storage space.

    This is perfect for

Those who already have a gallery wall created but want to incorporate a TV into the room. Just add the TV to the mix! Its also great for small homes without a lot of wall space, since you get a gallery wall, mirror space, and TV viewing all in one place!

Readying Your TV For A Gallery Wall

First, if you listened to last weeks podcast you heard that we got a new TV . We also decided to mount our new TV on the wall and used one of those in-wall power cord systems to hide the wire. That whole process only takes an hour or so and is SO WORTH IT. Weve got an entire post dedicated to creating a cord-free TV wall if youre interested in a step-by-step tutorial on that. That post also shows you how to hide a cable box if you have one. And if youre looking to cut the cord, heres how we did that.

But its not absolutely necessary to mount your TV to create a good-looking frame gallery around it. As you can see in the old photo below, we had ours resting on the media cabinet for years. But mounting it has definitely made the room feel more spacious and less cluttered. Also, we are BIG FANS of secondhand dressers as TV cabinets this one is from a thrift store and we have a similar one in our bonus room from Craigslist.

Determining The Right TV Height And Distance

When it comes to proper TV placement, height and distance are the most important elements to consider. It is easy to become preoccupied by fitting every piece of furniture into a room layout or mapping out your dream home theater without considering the personal comfort of the arrangement. Theres no reason to fret these reminders will help you avoid such a slip-up.

First, the television height should be at eye level for someone who is sitting down, not standing up. If the TV has to be higher up on the wall, the screen should be angled down so its still at eye level. Otherwise, a mounting low on the wall or on a short piece of furniture is preferable, so when youre seated your head will line up with the middle of the screen. Its much more comfortable to look straight ahead instead of up at the screen.

One of the most common interior design mistakes is buying a piece that is out of scale with a room. This goes for your television as well. Its one thing for a TV to be the focal point of a living space, but its another entirely if it dominates the room at the expense of the rest of your décor. Try not to cram a big TV into a small room, not just because it will dwarf your and furnishings, but also because it will hurt your eyes.

For example, with a 26-inch screen you only have to be 3 to 5 feet away. However, a 40-inch screen requires 5 to 9 feet of space for ideal viewership. Then when you upgrade to a TV thats 65 inches, you should be 8 to 14 feet away from it.
