What We Do in the Shadows is an American mockumentarycomedy horror television series created by Jemaine Clement that premiered March 27, 2019, on FX. The second television series in the franchise based on the 2014 film of the same name written by Clement and Taika Waititi, the series follows four vampire roommates in Staten Island, and stars Kayvan Novak, Matt Berry, Natasia Demetriou, Harvey Guillén, and .

The series’ second season premiered on April 15, 2020, and the third season premiered on September 2, 2021. In August 2021, the series was renewed for a fourth season, ahead of the third season premiere. It has been critically acclaimed for its cast and writing.

Is It Any Good

Nailing the same absurdity-tinged-with-horror tone as the movie that preceded it, this endlessly quotable mockumentary proves that the “vampire roommate” premise still has plenty of bite. Genius co-creators Taika Waititi and Jermaine Clement made smart moves by transferring the action in What We Do in the Shadows to Staten Island, New York , and shaking up the vampire mix. Fans of the film may have expected to see retreads on the characters they remember from the original, and Nandor and Laszlo could creditably pass for the film’s Vladislav and Deacon. But Nadja injects a note of wanton sexuality into the proceedings — the film’s vampires mostly struck out, lovewise — and Colin’s oatmeal-bland relentless drone gives the undead vampires a common enemy to bond over.

What We Do In The Shadows Season 4 Is Happening

WWDITS will be back for another season. FX renewed What We Do In The Shadows for season 4 back in August 2021, ahead of the season 3 premiere. This is promising news for the supernatural comedy series. Although it’s too soon for a release date, the early renewal means that a fall 2022 release is possible. So far, a few details are known: audiences can expect to learn more about Guillermo and his backstory including his family and according to EP Paul Simms, there will be more supernatural creatures in season 4 as well.

Audience Reviews For What We Do In The Shadows

  • May 10, 2020While it’s never quite as funny or just overall as good as these creators later works or even the eventual TV show adaptation, WWDitS benefits from it’s sheer earnestness and charm. Taika Waititi and Jermaine Clement are incredibly enjoyable performers, and what they’ve put together is a very enjoyable film with a lot of creativity and charm behind it. I have to say that while there are a couple big laughs, there aren’t as many as I’d hoped for. However, the movie is relentlessly likable, and while the laughs it does have aren’t huge they are pretty consistent. I was mostly at least chuckling through a lot of the movie. There is some clumsiness to the production that comes from something this low budget, but in a lot of cases they work around these things or use them to their benefit as best they can. It’s not perfect, and they did polish up on these ideas later on, but for a starting off point it’s so eager and just likable I really enjoyed it.

What We Do In The Shadows New TV Season

What We Do in the Shadows: Cameos in Episode 7 Took A Year ...

Entering its third year after a breakout second season, What We Do In The Shadows is now often described by critics as the funniest show on television. Which feels notable for an American series based on a New Zealand film.

It speaks to the ever-expanding pop culture footprint of Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, who together wrote, directed and starred in the 2014 mockumentary of the same name, which has now generated two TV spin-offs. The NZ-shot Wellington Paranormal finally began airing in the States earlier this year, buoyed by existing enthusiasm for the American spin-off, which follows a group of centuries-old vampires who share a dark old house in Staten Island, New York.

Clement created the show and helped to closely shepherd Shadows’ first two seasons, but has stepped away from day-to-day involvement for the third, which was shot during the pandemic.

The cast and producers recently gathered together on a Zoom call to talk about the new season, which sees big changes resulting from the bloody season two finale, which ended with live-in “familiar” Guillermo revealing himself to be a shockingly efficient vampire killer in order to save his masters from a death sentence imposed by the Vampiric Council.

“We have a few surprises this season,” showrunner Paul Simms says.

What We Do In The Shadows Season 4 Release Date: When Will It Air

While an official release date is yet to be announced, we know that the new season will premiere sometime in 2022.

The first two seasons both aired in spring, but delays caused by the coronavirus pandemic have since shifted the shows release schedule, prompting the third season to premiere in autumn.

What Parents Need To Know

Parents need to know that What We Do in the Shadows is a comedy based on the 2014 film of the same name. The levels of sex, language, and violence are about the same as in the original film, and the tone and humor is similar too. Expect bloody deaths, like when two vampires pull a man into a tree to suck his blood and blood rains down on his companion, or when a vampire bites the neck of a man, who slumps to the ground, dead. There are also dead bodies being comically disposed of. Vampires may have special-effects makeup that makes them appear horrifying, or they may appear human. There are jokes about sex, but no nudity or intense kissing there are also lots of references to virgins and their blood. Language is infrequent but mature: “f—ing,” “s–t,” “damn,” “hell.” Characters are somewhat diverse in terms of ethnicity and gender, and there are messages about tolerance and respect to be gleaned from the way they work out their differences at their house.

How Wwdits Set Up Season 4’s Story

Although the story details for season 4 aren’t yet known, the What We Do In The Shadows season 3 finale sets up various plot threads. Nandor finally made a concrete promise to turn Guillermo into a vampire once they got to his ancestral lands but because of Laszlo’s interference, that may not happen. Nadja will be in London, taking her new seat on the Supreme Vampiric Council, where she may need Guillermo to protect her. Lastly, Laszlo is embarking on a brand new journey: taking care of a now-infant Colin Robinson. One thing is certain: What We Do In The Shadows season 4 is sure to be interesting.

What We Do In The Shadows The Show Provides Examples Of The Following Tropes:

  • Aborted Arc: Jenna was obviously supposed to be a bigger part of the show in the first season as the gang’s off-kilter vampiric progeny struggling to adjust to her new unlife. However, Beanie Feldstein couldn’t commit enough time to the series, so her character just drops out of the plot. She’s only briefly referenced in the second season when her college roommate joins a gang of vampire-hunters.
  • Arjan, Arj Barker’s character, jumps out a window in Episode Three to escape the vampires. Similarily, Dave, Arj Barker’s character in Flight of the Conchords, jumps out a window to avoid the police.
  • In “The Trial,” the Vampire Council is populated by a bunch of actors who have previously played vampires. These include three of the vampires from the original What We Do in the Shadows film. The other actors are Tilda Swinton , Paul Reubens , Danny Trejo , Evan Rachel Wood , and Wesley Snipes . The allusion is especially driven home by the actors looking like their respective characters . The vampire council also mentions Robert, Tom and Brad, and Kiefer.
  • Jeff is shown pleasuring himself when Nadia takes the camera crew to spy on him to highlight how pathetic and single he is.
  • Laszlo’s ghost needs Laszlo’s help to reach an an orgasm.

What We Do In The Shadows Review The Undead Prove Dead Funny

This seductive blood-sucking comedy about the everyday struggles of a gang of vampire housemates in New York is silly, deadpan and full of killer gags

Television loves a good vampire, but for some reason, the eternal torment of immortal parasitic killers tends to lend itself more to melodrama than humour. From Buffy the Vampire Slayers perpetually unfortunate sexual attraction to the undead, to the Twi-lite of The Vampire Diaries, bloodsucking fiends are usually much less funny than they are in the wonderful and charismatic new comedy What We Do In the Shadows.

The series is based on the 2014 film of the same name, co-written and co-directed by Flight of the Conchords Jemaine Clement and Thor: Ragnaroks Taika Waititi. The pair also starred in the original film, but have handed over acting duties in the TV iteration to a new gang of undead roommates, making the most of the talented comedians who play them, as they struggle not only to transform Staten Island into a vampire colony, but to live together as a foursome in relative peace and harmony.

The transition from big screen to small has been smooth. Kayvan Novak is Nandor , better known as Nandor the Relentless, a formerly outstanding pillager whose purpose in life is now to keep his vampire house in a state of acceptable hygiene. He also enjoys the stationery section of a supermarket, which means that for me, he is the only one you can truly have any sympathy for.

What We Do In The Shadows: The Vampiric Council Explained

So what exactly is the Vampiric Council and what role does it play on What We Do in the Shadows? The answer is ultimately whatever role it needs to play. As a comedy, What We Do in the Shadows doesnt really have to concern itself with an overarching mythology. Still, it can be fun to build up a logical vampire underworld throughout its largely self-contained episodes. And thats where the Vampiric Council comes in.

The concept of a centralized vampire agency was first introduced in season 1 episode 7 The Trial. Following the unfortunate sun-induced death of Baron Afanas, Nandor, Nadja, Laszlo, and Colin Robinson are summoned to the Vampiric Council headquarters to face judgment. The headquarters just happen to be in a nondescript New York office building in the basement known as The Temple of the Blood-Devourers, just below Quislys Food and Beverage. Vampire-kind has one rule above all else: thou shalt not kill other vampires. And thanks to their association with Guillermo, thats a rule that Nandor and company have broken time and time again.

The Vampiric Council is an ancient organization. Very powerful and apparently very scary, Nandor tells the assembled camera operators in the season 1 episode.

They travel from all corners of the globe to administer supreme and final justice on any vampire in violation of the vampiric code, Laszlo adds.

What To Expect As ‘ozark’ Returns For Its Explosive Final Season

OK, so now we know that Colin Robinson is dead or is he?

In Thursday nights Season 3 finale of wacky, surreal FX vampire comedy What We Do in the Shadows, Laszlo trudged into the basement of the groups Staten Island house to bid adieu to energy vampireColin , who was moldering in a bed after dying in the penultimate episode.

Colin had a gaping hole in his chest, and when Laszlo, holding a lantern, followed a slimy trail into another room, he discovered a naked, crying newborn baby with Colins unmistakable grown-man head and holding his ever-present black glasses.

St, Laszlo muttered. Dude, we get it.

Colin in the form we know him as being an energy vampire died after 100 years, or has ceased to exist, but this new form of him was gestating inside his body this whole time and sprung out, series executive producer/showrunner/writer Paul Simms told The Post in an interview with Proksch and co-writer Sam Johnson. Now the question is, will he be the same Colin, the same energy vampire we know, or will he grow into something different?

Simms said that, from the outset, there was never any thought of killing off Colin . After Season 1, we couldnt just keep doing jokes about Colin says a boring story and it drains peoples energy, and thats why over the last two seasons youve seen him become more a part of the group with more facets of his personality.

But we wanted a good surprise at the end and a good challenge for ourselves in Season 4.

What We Do In The Shadows Season 4 Cast: Whos Returning

The main cast will all be returning for the new season, which means we’ll once again see Kayvan Novak as Nandor, Matt Berry as Laszlo, Harvey Guillén as Guillermo, Natasia Demetriou as Nadja, and Mark Proksch as Colin Robinson.

Proksch recently confirmed his return in an interview with Deadline, teasing that his character will still be in infant form come the start of the next season, and that much of his work on the show “will be done separately on green screen and other effects”.

As ever, we can also expect plenty more high-profile cameos. Taika Waititi himself once again featured in season three as a member of the Vampiric Council, while Arrested Development‘s David Cross and Blade star Donal Logue also made brief appearances.

Last season even saw Star Wars legend Mark Hamill give a show-stealing turn as Jim the vampire, so we’re fully prepared for similarly major names to pop up next time around.

What We Do in the Shadows season 4 plot: What will happen?

Undoubtedly, the biggest question going into season four is how Colin Robinson’s surprise rebirth will impact the show. The energy vampire spent the vast majority of season three trying to learn more about his kind and where they came from, only to fall gravely ill on his 100th birthday and decompose like a manky pumpkin. However, he now exists in terrifying infant form.
