Ive been connecting my Smart TV to Wi-Fi to watch my favorite shows on streaming services like Netflix. I like watching new episodes as soon as they come out to avoid spoilers.
I was going to spend a weekend at my folks place, but they didnt have a Smart TV on which I could watch online-exclusive shows. But they did have an older TV that didnt connect to Wi-Fi. So I had to figure out how to Connect a Non-Smart TV to Wi-Fi.
I was familiar with most modern television technology, but I had to do some research online to figure this out. The Internet had many helpful articles, so I put together this comprehensive article using everything Id learned.
To connect a Non-Smart TV to Wi-Fi, use a streaming device, an HDMI cable, a Blu-Ray player, a gaming console, or even Mirroring/Screencasting from another device.

How Much Data Does Streaming Use
Lots. And if you are watching in HD or Ultra HD – Mega LOTS!
Again using Netflix as an example, here are Netflix’s estimates of how much data an hour of video will consume:
- Lowest Resolution – 0.3 GB per hour
- Medium Resolution – 0.7 GB per hour
- Standard Definition – 1GB per hour
- High – 3 GB per hour
- Ultra HD – 7 GB per hour
Netflix sets the gold standard for video compression – equivalent resolutions on other services often burn through data even faster!

Cons Of Using A Mobile Hot Spot
- Your data speeds may be throttled
- Hotspot data isn’t unlimited
- You may need to switch carriers or plans to gain hotspot access
- It’s not the best for gamers or people who use over 100GB of data per month
If you know that you use colossal amounts of data each month and don’t want to deal with slow speeds and low-quality video, then replacing internet with a mobile hotspot may not be the best choice for you.
Conversely, if you’re a renter looking for places in your budget to save money, a mobile hotspot plan is one of the first changes you should consider.

Why Wont My TV Connect To My Hotspot
If your mobile hotspot is already working at maximum capacity, theres a high chance your smart TV wont connect to your mobile hotspot! This is because Mobile hotspots and WiFi routers have different capacities.
While there are some hotspots that can connect to as many as 10 devices at the same time, other hotspots can only connect to a total of 5 devices at once.
However, if your smart TV is the only device trying to connect to your mobile hotspot, there are a few things you can do to troubleshoot the connection issue:
- Switch off both your smart TV and the phone thats providing the mobile hotspot.
- After one to two minutes, restart both your smart TV and phone and then try to connect the two devices again.
- The process of switching off and on allows your mobile hotspot to reboot and refresh and you should now be able to connect your smart TV to your mobile hotspot without any issue!
What About Rebroadcasting?
A number of mobile phones now allow you to rebroadcast WiFI signals in order to cover a greater area. Simply put, this feature allows you to conveniently use your phone as a Wifi range extender.
If your TV is located in a dead zone or in an area of the house where the WiFi signal strength is relatively low, its obviously going to be difficult for you to stream content smoothly on your device.
In such situations, your only option will be to install a WiFi range extender or make use of the rebroadcast option.
Connect Using Google Chromecast
While the plug-and-play route might be the simplest, you can make a wireless connection, too, without the aid of additional adapters. If you’ve got a or a TV with Chromecast built right into the software, your Android phone is, in all likelihood, ready to cast to your TV with no additional hardware needed. The only requirement is that both your Android device and your TV are on the same wireless network.
Just access the Google Home app, head to the Account tab, and select Mirror device. From here, tap Cast and select your TV from the list of available devices.

Connect Via Streaming Devices
Using a streaming device is the easiest way to connect to Wi-Fi because of its obvious perks. It is user-friendly. Aside from providing internet access to your TV, it also has so many inbuilt applications like YouTube and Twitter. But the content being offered varies from one streaming device to another.
There are different streaming devices available in the market. The exact method of connecting the device to your TV may vary depending upon its kind. However, the general process remains the same.
A variety of streaming devices are available in the market like Apple TV, Roku, Google Chromecast, Amazon Fire TV Stick, etc. Apple TV, though expensive, works well if you have an Apple ecosystem at home. Roku offers an extensive free movie channel but doesnt support all streaming devices.
Google Chromecast lets you mirror your phone, tablet, or laptop on the TV, but you have to download streaming apps to your device. Amazon Fire TV Stick is cheap and easy to use, but it prioritizes Amazon content.
How To Connect Your iPhone To A TV Wirelessly
There are several methods you can use to connect your iOS device to a TV wirelessly. One of them is to use Chromecast, but you can also use the native AirPlay feature, Apple TV, or a DLNA app.
AirPlay is a feature on Apple devices that allows you to share music, photos, videos, and more from your iPhone/iPad to your TV. You can connect your iPhone to a TV wirelessly using AirPlay provided the devices are on the same WiFi network.
Apple TV is a set-top box by Apple that can stream Netflix, HBO or other services, deliver music from Apple Music, play games from the App Store, and also act as a hub for HomeKit-compatible smart home devices.
Apple TV supports AirPlay, which means you can connect your iPhone to your TV wirelessly, and stream audio and video content. Connect your iPhone and Apple TV to the same WiFi network, and then connect to Apple TV via the Control Center.
If you have a Smart TV that supports DLNA, you can connect your iPhone/iPad to your TV wirelessly using a compatible DLNA app. You can install a DLNA-compatible iOS app for your TV such as 8player Pro, TV Assist, or ArkMC, but check the app developers website for instructions on how to use the app with your TV.

Problems With Using Your Mobile Phone For Home Internet
- Data: Most people will run out of data. Mobile plans offer 1020 GB per month for hotspotting, but the average household uses 344 GB per month.
- Slowing: Some mobile carriers will slow your connection to dial up speeds once you use 1020 GB of data in a month while hotspotting.
- Risk of termination: Some mobile carriers will flag you for data overage and/or terminate your service.
So, using your mobile data connection to connect laptops and gaming systems at home won’t really be practical for most people. You’ll end up with slow service and data overage fees. It can work in a pinch, though, like when you’re moving or traveling. It can also be a solution for some really low data users who exclusively use their cell phones to connect to the internet and don’t have other devices.
A better option is getting a home internet plan from a cell phone provider. Yup, thats a thing now! Fiber doesnt reach everywhere, but if you can get a mobile phone signal theres a good chance you can get a home plan that delivers a connection using cellular data. T-Mobile, Verizon, and many smaller carriers offer fixed or even portable internet plans. Learn more about these options in the LTE home internet section below.
How Well Do Mobile Hotspots Work
Mobile hotspots work very well. Although they generally dont give you as much speed and data as a home internet plan, they give you a reliable connection in places and situations where its hard to get internet access. Theyre especially useful when youre on the road a lot, working remotely in a restaurant or coffee shop, or staying in a vacation home.

Use Samsung Dex To Connect Your Samsung Phone To A TV
Among the most popular Android devices available, you’ll find Samsung flagship handsets. These feature connectivity with televisions and monitors. For pure screen mirroring, you’ll need a USB-C to HDMI cable.
To connect a Samsung Galaxy S8/S8+/Note 8 and later to your TV, merely hook up a USB-C to HDMI adapter. Plug the USB-C male into the USB-C charging port on your Samsung Galaxy device. Then run the HDMI cable into your TV.
However, Samsung Galaxy S8, S9, and Note 8/9 devices also include DeX. Bridging the gap between mobile and desktop, DeX offers a desktop experience run from your handset. You can run all the same Android apps, however, access your phone’s gallery, and basically get everything on the big screen
Since this is proprietary technology, the method for connecting a DeX-enabled Samsung phone to a TV differs from standard hookups.
For the entire Galaxy S8 and Note 8 line up, as well as S9 and S9+, you’ll need a dock to use DeX.
However, the Note 9 doesn’t require a dock. Instead, the Note 9 enters DeX mode with merely a USB-C to HDMI cable. That’s far more useful than a dedicated dock.
If using a dock, you will also need a power cable for powering the dock and charging your device. To find out more, see our guide to using DeX to turn your phone or tablet into a computer.
Pc Connection The Oldest Method

Can I Stream Netflix Or Watch Tiktok If Im Using My Mobile Hotspot For Home Internet
Although you can occasionally stream video from Netflix or TikTok with your mobile hotspot feature, remember that video streaming uses a lot of data. So, watching too many episodes of Umbrella Academy might push you over your data limit and slap you with sluggish speeds of less than 1 Mbps for the rest of the month.

How Fast Are Wi
Most Wi-Fi hotspots hit top speeds of around 3040 Mbps.
However, speeds vary depending on the kind of hotspot you have and the cell service available. 5G hotspots reach much faster speeds, hitting 50 Mbps in the lower range while topping out at well past 1,000 Mbps in some urban areas .
Since a hotspot runs on a wireless connection, speeds can go up and down due to signal interference. That can happen if youre far away from the nearest cell tower, and it can also be impacted by certain geographic landmarks in your area. Mountains, canyons, trees, and even bad weather can make it harder for a hotspot to pick up cellular signals.
Usb To TV: Connecting To View Photos
Modern Android devices don’t support USB Mass Storage, so your TV won’t view your device as a true external drive.
This assumes that your TV or monitor features a USB input capable of displaying files from a connected storage device.
Simply connect your cable to your phone, then to the TV. With the standard USB end of the cable connected to your display, change the input on your TV to USB.
On Android, it’s likely you’ll need to change your USB settings to Transfer files or Transfer photos . To do this, drag down your notifications from the top of the screen when connected. In the menu, tap the USB is charging this device notification to change it.
Note that this doesn’t work with all TVs. In some cases, the USB ports are purely for firmware updates.

Does My Cell Phone Allow Me To Create A Mobile Hotspot
Some cell phone plans don’t allow you to create a mobile hotspot at all. You can find out quickly if your phone plan allows it by going to Settings and trying to turn on the personal hotspot. If you dont see the option for Personal Hotspot or Wi-Fi Hotspot, or its greyed out, your plan does not support this feature. You can learn specifics about your plan by contacting your cell phone provider or reviewing details about your phone plan on their website.
Wireless Options: Miracast And Google Cast
Lets be honest here: its 2017, and no one likes to deal with wires or cablesespecially for transient connections. If you can connect your smartphone to your TV without even getting up off the couch, why would you not want to?
The good news here is that there a couple of different types of connections that allow just this: Google Cast and Miracast. Like MHL and Slimport, these are two means to the same end.
The primary difference between these wireless technologies and their wired counterpartsaside from the wiresis that instead of mirroring your phones entire display on the TV , you can pick and choose what is shown. For example, you can play Netflix or YouTube on the TV and still use your smartphone for other thingsit effectively just becomes a really expensive remote control.
The biggest downside is latency. If you plan on trying to play your phones games on the big screen, there will definitely be some lag between whats happening on the phone and what you see on the TV. Because of that, we dont really recommending using wireless connections for gaming. Go wired, instead.
Of the two technologies, Miracast is older. It was developed by the Wi-Fi Alliance as a way of replicating HDMI over Wi-Fi. While Miracast initially required the TV to have built-in Miracast support, many dongles are now available for you to add to any TV. Miracast is also the standard used in devices like , which we highly recommend if youre looking for a Miracast device.
