Apple TV+ 3mos Free On Phone But Not On Roku Device

How To Use The Apple TV App On Roku

I have a free 3mo trial for Apple TV+ since I bought an Apple product. Apple confirmed my login and Apple ID, and I can play it on my phone, which is too small for me to see. I called Apple because this free 3mo trial won’t work on my TV with streaming device model 3800X . Apple confirmed my subscription, but Roku can’t “read” it. Roku can “launch” Apple TV on my TV, but it wants me to sign up for a 7day trial or subscribe. Apple says it all works and should be able to be read through Roku to stream on TV, and said it’s a Roku problem.

I deleted the app, added it again, deleted Apple TV from phone and Roku streaming on my TV, then started over. No dice. It just doesn’t recognize my Apple ID or anything. It doesn’t work with my Roku sign in either.Apple won’t deal with this. Who can help? Thank you!

    Watch Hbo Max On Roku

With AirPlay support, theres finally a workaround for Rokus missing HBO Max support: Just connect an iPhone or iPad to your Roku via AirPlay, then use the HBO Max mobile app to start playing a video. You can activate AirPlay in either of two ways:

    • Open Control Center on your iPhone or iPad by swiping down from the top-right corner. Then, hit the AirPlay button at the top of your playback controls and select your Roku from the device list.
    • Start playing a video in HBO Max first, then hit the AirPlay button at the top of the video screen and select your Roku from the device list.

In both cases, the video should pop up on your TV in full resolution, with playback controls appearing on your phone or tablet. You can also use the regular Roku remote to pause, fast forward, or rewind.

HBO even seems to be encouraging this workaround, with its AirPlay help page calling out Roku support in particular. Its the best way to watch HBO Max on Roku devices while the two companies work out their issues.

Why I Ditched Roku For The Apple TV

    ByHenry T. Casey24 October 2020

If youre willing to pay a premium, the Apple TV is the perfect streaming device for iPhone owners

The Apple TV 4K seems crazy expensive at $179, and on the surface it doesn’t really offer a lot more than cheaper competitors. Yet I noticed that I was starting to use it a lot more a few months ago, as I stopped using my Roku Ultra.

Don’t get me wrong. I like the Roku Ultra a lot. I bought one for my parents for Christmas last year. But once I freed its HDMI cable in my rat’s nest of cords behind my TV, and put that cord into my Apple TV 4K, I have never really looked back. Both are on our list of best streaming devices heck, the Roku Ultra is ranked higher but for me, personally, I’ve made my choice.

My change of habit was enabled by the fact that as the editor in charge of streaming devices at Tom’s Guide, and during quarantine I’ve basically collected all of the major streaming devices behind my TV, so I can test and compare.

But my decision to start using the Apple TV 4K more, though, is more about how most of these devices do a lot of the same things and it’s the few ways they stand out that can push you to use one over the other. Let’s dig in:

Apple TV makes ROKU the best streaming device, heres why
    Mentioned in this article

While this years Roku Ultra supports Bluetooth for playing music or podcasts from your phone, other Roku players arent so lucky. In those cases, youre limited to Rokus own selection of apps, which isnt bad, but is missing certain sources like Apple Music, Overcast, and Spotify Stations. Besides, searching for artists on your phone is easier than thumbing around with a remote.

AirPlay turns Roku into a much more versatile music player. Just follow the same playback instructions as you would for other apps like HBO Max to start playing your tunes.

    Screen And Content Mirroring

If you’re an Apple device user, the Apple TV clearly wins on the streaming-from-your-device front. Both models feature Apple AirPlay 2, which lets you stream your iPad, iPhone, or Mac screen straight to your TV. AirPlay also supports audio streaming, letting you play higher-quality Wi-Fi audio streams than Bluetooth.

Roku streamers also support screen mirroring and content playback, but it’s a bit more limited. You need to do everything through the Roku app on your phone or tablet. The good news is that this means you can stream from your Android device, which the Apple TV doesn’t allow. The bad news is that the app-based connection is less robust than AirPlay 2.
