In recent years Apple has launched a swath of subscription services including Apple TV Plus, iCloud Plus, Apple News Plus, Apple Music, and Apple Fitness. But theyve also launched another subscription service called Apple Arcade, which is now a few years old.
Apple Arcade is a paid-for service, but sometimes you can get it for free. Lets take a look at what the service entails
Apple TV Plus: What’s Coming Soon
Apple typically teases its upcoming slate of Apple TV Plus movies and TV shows at its annual iPhone reveal event. This year, though, that didn’t happen, with the company’s recent Far Out showcase held on September 7 dedicated to its new hardware releases, exclusively.
For our money, a sizzle reel showing off the streamer’s 2023 offering was the bare minimum we hoped to expect from Apple at its latest iPhone launch, so it was disappointing to see Apple TV Plus sidelined in that way.
We do know, however, that Apple is currently preparing to debut the Martin Scorsese-directed movie Killers of the Flower Moon starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro on its streaming service to the tune of $200 million. An unnamed, Brad Pitt-starring Formula 1 movie directed by Top Gun: Maverick filmmaker Joseph Kosinski is also in the pipeline.
Suffice to say, then, Apple has some big-ticket movie material up its sleeve for 2023 and beyond. We’d expect to hear some official communication on what other projects it’s working on soon.
What Is The Apple TV App
The Apple TV app was first announced in October 2016 and launched on the fourth-generation Apple TV and iOS devices at the time. It is now a preinstalled app on all iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV devices.
Apple positioned the app as a modernized TV guide: its an all-in-one hub for finding recommendations on shows to watch. The Watch Now tab offers personalized picks suited to your own tastes and pulls from many different popular video subscription apps.
The Apple TV app also has a sports component, offering live scores and notifications for close games. And lastly, it provides easy access to your iTunes TV show and movie purchases or rentals. Beginning in May, the TV app will become the place to go for those same movie and TV show digital purchases on Apple TV.

What’s The Difference Between Apple TV+ And Channels
The revamped TV app also includes “Channels,” which will let you subscribe to and watch services like HBO, Starz, SHOWTIME, CBS All Access, Smithsonian Channel, EPIX, Tastemade, Noggin, and MTV Hits, right in the TV app without needing to open a different app. Channels are completely separate from Apple TV+, which is in fact Apple’s own channel and available the Channels section.
Along with Channels and Apple TV+, the Apple TV app makes recommendations and suggestions for shows and movies from iTunes and more than 150 streaming apps and cable services like Canal+, Charter Spectrum, DIRECTV NOW and PlayStation Vue, though content that is not Apple’s own and not included in a channel will need to be watched in a third-party app just like the original TV app.
What Are The System Requirements For Apple Arcade
As stated, the Apple Arcade service is designed for iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV. One subscription lets you play Apple Arcade on any supported device at no additional cost.
Apple Arcade works with any Apple device the runs iOS 13 or later, iPadOS 13 or later, tvOS 13 or later, and macOS Catalina or later. Apple Arcade is not available on the Apple Watch or watchOS for obvious reasons.

What Devices Can Stream Apple TV Plus
Apple’s programming is available on all its devices with the Apple TV app.
Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston revealed the name of their Apple TV Plus series, The Morning Show, at an Apple’s event.
In addition, Apple TV Plus is available on some competitors’ devices. Apple’s TV app is available on Roku and Fire TV, two of the most widely used streaming devices in the US, and for smart TVs from Samsung and LG. You can watch it on Sony and Vizio smart TVs via AirPlay, and the TV app should be available for those smart TVs now.
Apple widened support for Apple TV Plus to game consoles in the fall. In October, Sony said its Playstation 5 would support Apple TV Plus at launch. A couple of weeks later, Microsoft said Apple TV Plus would be supported on the Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.
Subscribers will also be able to watch Apple TV Plus on the web at tv.apple.com.
But the Apple TV app isn’t available on any mobile devices except iPhones or iPads. That means Apple TV Plus subscribers with non-Apple phones — meaning, the huge population of people with Android phones — need to stream to their mobiles via the web, rather than in an app.

What Are Apple TV Channels
Apple will soon offer optional add-on subscriptions similar to what Amazon does with its Prime Video Channels. Youll be able to pay for HBO, Showtime, and other services using your Apple account. Now, you can already subscribe to those networks on iOS and from their respective Apple TV apps, but there are benefits to doing it through Apples new TV app method.
For one, you can share access to your Apple TV Channels with up to six family members. Second, instead of having to watch content from those Channels across several different apps, everything will be viewable right inside the TV app. And last, youll be able to download shows for offline viewing.

How Do I Stream Apple TV Plus
All Apple TV Plus programing is available in the Apple TV app for the service’s subscribers. Apple TV Plus is $5 a month, and a subscription unlocks the full catalog of its original programming, without any additional fees.
But unlike Netflix and other subscription streaming services, Apple TV Plus doesn’t have its own dedicated app. Apple TV Plus programming resides inside Apple’s TV app, which overall serves as a hub to watch programming from other video subscriptions, and to rent or buy movies and shows a la carte. That can be a little confusing, but the TV app has a tab dedicated just to Apple TV Plus originals, so you can find them all in one place without other stuff that requires separate payments.

How Does The Apple TV Plus Cost Compare To Netflix
Like a featherweight boxer going up against the heavyweight champion, it isnt really a fair fight. Apple TV Plus has around 80 series, movies, and documentaries combined, in comparison to Netflixs 5000 plus a streaming library a hundred times bigger. But in its defence, Apple has been focusing on producing brand-new, exclusive content, of which much more is in the pipeline.
At $8.99 a basic Netflix plan costs twice as much as the monthly Apple TV Plus price. It does have an incredible amount of programming, but to get a picture quality equivalent to Apples, youd need to pick its top-tier $17.99 Premium plan. Suddenly, its almost four-times the Apple TV Plus cost which at $4.99 lets you watch everything in 4K and share your account with an additional five people.
While it wont replace Netflix for a long time, Apple TV Plus has an intriguing line-up of original series like Schmigadoon, sci-fi epic Foundation, plus films and some fun licensed content like Charlie Schulz’s beloved Peanuts cartoons. At the very least, its a delicious side-dish to the all-you-can-eat buffet that is Netflix.
How The Cost Of Apple TV+ Compares To Other Services
Of all the major paid streaming services, Apple TV+ is one of the cheapest.
Paramount+ is priced the same , but this is for a plan with commercials. The cost doubles if you don’t want ads, which Apple TV+ doesn’t include anyway.
Elsewhere:
- Hulu costs $6.99/month, though is ad-supported.
- Disney+ costs $7.99/month. In the future, the company plans to launch a cheaper ad-supported plan, which might compete with the price of Apple TV+.
- HBO Max’s cheapest plan costs $9.99/month, though is ad-supported.
- Netflix’s cheapest plan costs $9.99/month, though everything streams in SD and you can only watch on one screen simultaneously.
- Amazon Prime Video is $14.99/month when included in an Amazon Prime subscription, which comes with plenty of other perks like speedy shopping delivery and music streaming.
From a pure cost perspective, Apple TV+ is fantastic. But that’s meaningless if you can’t use the service or don’t enjoy its content.
