However, the only apps you can address by name directly are the ones mentioned previously that Google Home supports.

Does Google TV Replace Android TV
Throughout 2021 and beyond, Google TV will be the primary interface for TV manufacturers that opted for Android TV, which was also developed by Google for use on TVs, media players, set-top boxes, and more. Google TV is essentially a re-skin of Android TV at its core with added features and will be used by Google going forward. In June last year, The Streamable reported that Googles VP of Android TV and Google TV, Shalina Govil-Pai, said that while Andriod TV will continue to provide the base operating system, Googles plan is to have all of their third-party Android TV partners shift all of their retail devices to Google TV. Check with your TV manufacturer to see if your TV can be updated to Google TV.

How To Access Free Live Channels On Google TV
As announced on The Keyword, Pluto TV is integrating with Google TV. This means you can access over 300 new live TV channelsincluding movies, sports, and TV showsthrough the Live tab on your Google TV device. Youll also be able to see channel recommendations under the For You tab.
Initially, Pluto TV integration will only be available to people in the United States, so youll need to find another source of free content if you reside elsewhere. Alternatively, you could get crafty and into thinking youre a US resident.
Pluto TV integration adds to Googles expanding selection of free TV content, which must be making paid streaming services nervous. An overabundance of choice makes deciding on a subscription difficult, and a free and easy solution is appealing.
If Pluto TV channels arent yet appearing in your Google TV app, you may need to wait for the rollout to complete. Google hasnt given a clear indication of when all US residents will receive access or if the service will expand to other regions, so a little patience may be needed.
Chromecast With Google TV: Design
- Ovular design akin to the original Chromecast
- Comes with a remote
- Can be powered by some TVs, or from the wall
For a few years now Google has stuck to a hockey-puck shape for its Chromecast devices, and its done so again with the Chromecast with Google TV. The latest design is slightly more elongated than before, but by and large its pretty similar to its predecessors.
Again you’ll connect the Chromecast to your TV via an attached HDMI cable and draw power from either a wall outlet or via a USB port on your TV if youre lucky.
We actually plugged the Chromecast into the back of a new Vizio V-Series TV, and were informed that it couldnt draw enough power from the sets USB port. This could be frustrating for anyone who doesn’t have many remaining free power outlets in the vicinity of their entertainment center, but most people wont be bothered by plugging the Chromecast into the wall.
Unlike the Chromecast Ultra, theres no Ethernet jack on the Chromecast with Google TV, which means it will only work over Wi-Fi. According to Google youll be able to buy a USB-C to Ethernet adapter for the Chromecast with Google TV, but one isnt included in the box.
Because this is the first revamped Google TV product it does, of course, have a Google Assistant button on the remote that you can use to summon the eponymous virtual assistant which well talk more about in the next section.

Chromecast With Google TV: Performance
- Rock-steady streaming, even in low-bandwidth households
- Small bit of noticeable pop-in upon setup
- Support for 4K HDR and Dolby Atmos
Chromecast with Google TV performs admirably and rivals the performance of its competitors. Google hasnt been explicitly clear on whats going on inside the hardware at a system level, but regardless of whatever SoC its chosen to use, we’ve seen very few points that the Chromecast dipped in performanceespecially once we chose which content we wanted to watch.
In fact, the only real slowdown we noticed was at startup when the Chromecast was first populating the UI for the first time – which took a few seconds but wasnt a substantial time suck. Whats impressed us is that the hardware seems to work both near the router and far away where theres less signal, and seems to be just fine with less bandwidth not that wed recommend trying it if you plan on watching 4K HDR content.
Speaking of, the Chromecast with Google TV can stream in 1080p or 4K HDR with support for the HDR10+ and Dolby Vision formats – all of which wed recommend testing out at some point as they look downright great. For audiophiles, the new Chromecast supports DTS, Dolby Audio, Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby Atmos formats, but like the HDR formats youll need a compatible TV and/or sound system to actually hear them.

Google TV Adds More Than 300 Free Channels To Its Live Tab With Pluto TV
Google TV is adding yet another cord-cutting option to its live TV tab. With the addition of Pluto TV, Google TV users now have even more live TV channels to choose from.
Beginning today, Google TV will now support Pluto TV within the live TV tab, meaning users can easily access more than 300 free channels from the platforms primary live TV hub. Pluto TV is the fourth streaming service to grab a spot on Google TVs tab. Previously, Google TV supported YouTube TV, Philo, and Sling all of which require paid subscriptions.
Technically Google TV already offers plenty of free live TV services through its apps, but baking an ad-supported service directly into the live tab is a much easier way to find live and linear coverage. Plus, rival streamer Roku already supports free live TV through its Roku Channel experience.
In addition to adding Pluto TV to its live tab, new Google TV users can also claim six months of Peacock Premium for free . Peacock Premium gives users access to originals, live sports, on-demand movies, and series, as well as WWE programming.
Google said in a blog post that the new Pluto TV integration will be supported on all Google TV devices within the coming weeks, with more free streaming options on the way in 2022.
