Set Up Apple TV To Stream Audio To Airplay 2enabled Devices

To stream audio from Apple TV to other audio devices such as HomePod or other network-connected speakers, add your Apple TV to a room in the Home app on your iOS or iPadOS device.

Set Up Airplay On Your Apple TV

On your Apple TV, go to Settings > AirPlay and HomeKit. Enable AirPlay if its not already turned on. You can then set up security measures for accessing AirPlay. Select Allow Access, then choose the type of access you want to allow.

Choose Everyone to let anyone stream or mirror to your Apple TV. Pick Anyone on the Same Network to require them to be on the same Wi-Fi network first. Select Only People Sharing This Home to limit streaming and mirroring to just those in your Apple Family. Your best bet is to allow access to anyone on the same network.

You can opt to require a password to stream content through AirPlay. But as long as your Wi-Fi network is protected with a strong password, this option may be overkill.

Youll find other settings here to review and possibly change. Select Also Allow Nearby to AirPlay if you want nearby devices that are not connected to your network to use AirPlay. Choose Conference Room Display to make the Apple TV show instructions on using AirPlay when in screen saver mode. The AirPlay Display Underscan option determines how to handle cropping when you display the screen of your Mac on your Apple TV. You can keep this at Auto.

Choose Room to assign the Apple TV to the Bedroom, Living Room, Game Room, or other area of the house, which will help you identify the correct device if you have multiple Apple TVs in your home.

Open an audio app, such as iTunes, and the sound should automatically pipe through your Apple TV. Mirroring To Roku Fire TV And Chromecast

If you dont have an Apple TV and dont feel like paying for a pricey adapter cable, you can use mirroring apps to share your iPhone or iPad screen on Roku, Fire TV, and Chromecast devices instead.

Several apps offer this with varying degrees of success, but Ive gotten good results from 2kit Consultings Screen Mirroring apps for Roku, Fire TV, and Chromecast. These apps use iOSs Screen Recording feature to capture video from your iOS device and send it to the streaming player.

2kit Consultings Screen Mirroring apps arent as sharp or responsive as AirPlay mirroring, but theyre a good enough alternative for Roku, Fire TV, and Chromecast devices.

Some caveats do apply: Youll experience some delay, video quality isnt perfect, and youll usually have to sit through an ad before you can mirror unless you upgrade to the paid versions of these apps. Still, these apps are good enough for mirroring photos, websites, presentations, and social media feeds.

With Chromecast, be aware that you can also send video, audio, pictures, and information to your TV from from thousands of supported apps. These apps will allow you to play content directly on the television, so you dont need to mirror your iPhone or iPad display.

But if youre looking for something thats affordable, you can choose any of these options EZCast Ultra and MiraScreen D7 to Airplay video content or go for Belkin SoundForm Connect or Acemax M5 for casting audio content using Airplay.

Although the aforementioned devices claim Airplay support, wed recommend that you buy a Chromecast device instead of as its relatively easier to use and there are a bunch of apps that offer native Chromecast support to stream content wirelessly. Google offers the latest Chromecast with Google TV for under $40 but if you simply want a device for Chromecast, you can opt for the Third Gen Google Chromecast that you can get for under $30.

Once youve gotten a hold of an Airplay or Chromecast-supported device, you can connect it to your TV and start streaming content using the Airplay or Chromecast option on the relevant app by following instructions from either Method 1 or Method 2 respectively.

Stream Or Mirror From Your iPhone Or iPad

To stream content from an iOS/iPadOS device to an Apple TV, you have a couple of options.

Open Control Center and tap the AirPlay icon on the upper right of the playback control. Select the name of the Apple TV through which you want to stream the audio or video. You can now play, pause, go forward, go back, and otherwise control your music from your iOS/iPadOS device. To disconnect your device from the Apple TV, tap the entry for iPhone or iPad.

There is another way to stream if you’re in the middle of watching or listening. With the Apple Music app open and playing a song, for example, navigate to the Now Playing screen, tap the AirPlay icon, and select the Apple TV or Mac to push the media to the appropriate destination.

This also works for Apple’s Podcasts and Books apps, as well as third-party apps like , Hulu, Spotify, and YouTube. Just look for the AirPlay icon in the app and switch to your Apple TV. For third-party apps, you may first need to grant them permission to access your local network, which you can do in the Settings app on your device.

Instead of pushing audio or video to Apple TV or Mac, you can mirror the screen of your mobile device on your Apple TV or Mac. Set this up by opening Control Center on your device, tapping the Screen Mirroring icon, and selecting your Apple TV or Mac as the destination.

Possibly the easiest way to stream from iPad or iPhone is to connect a cable, but you can’t use just any cable. Because iOS devices use Apple’s proprietary Lightning connector, you need a special adapter.

Apple’s Lightning Digital AV Adapter is the first half of what you need to stream to your TV. The other half is an HDMI cable for connecting the adapter to the TV.
