The Joy Of Commercial

To be fair, going commercial free is an extra fee. But, boy is it worth it. I didn’t realize how much it was worth until I was forced back into the traditional TV commercial milieu and had to endure commercials — often 20 minutes or more of every hour of TV watched.

Let’s look at the economics and I’ll come back to the benefits in a minute. My wife and I subscribe to Netflix, Paramount+, Disney+, Hulu, and HBOMax. We get Prime Video free as part of our Prime membership, so I’m not counting that in our video-on-demand budget.

If we were to subscribe to these services with commercials, our monthly cost would be $48.96. Keep in mind, we don’t have a cable TV bill. We only watch these streaming services. We actually pay ten bucks more each month, because Paramount+ costs an extra four dollars and Hulu costs an extra six dollars each month to go commercial-free.

That extra ten dollars is worth it. The shows are so much more pleasant to watch without the commercials. Plus, I can get a little more actual TV watching in what little available free time I have. Some weeks, I have so little free time, it seems ludicrous to just fritter it away watching ads I don’t want or need to see anyway.

    Reaches A Target Audience

    With each year, television becomes better at reaching a client’s target audience. That used to be radio’s big advantage, with all the various radio formats allowing a client to make easy decisions on where to place an ad buy.

    With more and more niche cable TV channels, television offers many of the same advantages. A garden supply center can buy commercial time through a local cable TV company so that ads appear on a home-and-garden cable channel. Buying cable TV advertising not only helps a company reach its target audience, but cable ad rates are usually much cheaper than those on broadcast TV stations.

    But the audience on a cable TV channel is also much smaller. So while the rates are lower, a client may be reaching only a few thousand viewers with a commercial.

    A broadcast TV station can offer a better opportunity to reach more people, although at a higher cost. However, there are options for TV stations, too. If clients want their ads to appear during a local 6:00 p.m. TV newscast but can’t afford the cost, you can steer them to the morning newscast instead. They still reach the desired news audience but at a much lower rate.

    # 3 Separate The Subject

    Position your subject a good distance from the background. This accomplishes multiple goals: it prevents the green background from accidentally spilling onto your subject, makes it easier to light, and prevents your key light from casting shadows or creating hot spots on your green screen. You should try to move your subjects as far as is feasible given your setup, but aim for at least 5-6 feet. It makes life easier both during production and in post.

    Additionally, make sure the subject lighting matches the scene you hope to put them in if you are using the green screen to recreate a location. Otherwise, the lighting on the subject wont match the background, and it will come across quite obviously that the subject isnt actually there. Also, if you combine this with a shallow depth of field it can help ensure your green screen is nice and even in the background.
