Buying A TV Mount For A Fireplace
The important search term if shopping online or in-person is: full motion TV mount. There are also mounts on the market that swing horizontally but thats not really what you need for a fireplace.
The high viewing angle requires a full motion mount that has tilt capability as well as articulation. The vertical adjustments on the mount can allow you to watch TV at a more pleasing viewing angle, then pull the TV back up when not in use to take up less space by the fireplace.
How To Mount TV Over Fireplace And Hide Wires:
To start, I had to remove the tongue and groove, but you will probably just have drywall. If you have brick this technique will still work but you will it will take a little more effort. Heres a tutorial for screwing into brick: HERE.
- I used 2×2 pieces of wood to create a frame around the fireplace, securing it with 3 inch screws.
- I found the studs with a stud finder and marked them on the wall.
- Then I added a 2×4 horizontally where I wanted to mount the TV and secured it into the studs.
- Next, I added in some scrap 2×1s and 2×4s to create a base to screw a solid piece of masonite.
- I drilled a hole right above the mantel and created a channel to feed the cord through. Our box for the TV is in the cabinet.
If you dont have built-ins beside your TV, just leave a small opening for the cord when you are attaching the 2×2s.
- I had the hardware store cut a piece of masonite to fit the exact dimensions I need to cover the wall from the mantel to the ceiling. I chose masonite because its so thin, but if you prefer wood, plywood would also work.
- I attached the masonite to the wooden frame I built with nails and then finished it off the edges with molding.
- I make sure I had the placement of the television in the correct spot, I used the template that came with it to pre-drill the holes and cut the opening for the cord.

Assess Your Brick Wall Condition
With this installation method your hanging the weight of the TV mount and TV entirely from the brick wall. This is for real brick walls only that are built using brick and cement.Not thin brick veneer. And the condition of the brick matters.
If your brick wall is old and brittle then it may not be able to hold the weight of your TV. Once you determine and mark the location of the TV mount inspect the area to make sure your bricks arent brittle or breaking. Youll be able to see if the bricks are string enough to hold the TV. If you can break them with your hand then they may not be strong enough.
In the case that the bricks arent strong enough to hold the TV then I recommend pointing the area. Most bricks are weak because of the mortar and not the bricks themselves. But if youve got both brick damage and bad mortar its not that hard to break out the old bricks and install new ones.
Making sure your brick wall is strong enough to support the weight of your TV is a very important step and shouldnt be avoided.

Sleeve or Wedge Anchors are best for cement or brick walls
Working in older buildings, many times Im asked to hang a TV on a brick or cement wall. In brownstones, many times people want to hang a HDTV or flat panel TV over the fireplace. Most of the fireplaces no longer function, being old coal or gas fireplaces. Be sure not to drill holes into the chimney of functioning fireplace. If youd like to hide the wires, like we did in the top photo, we use plastic raceway molding.
To hang a TV on a brick or cement wall, you will need sleeve or wedge anchors. You could also use lead anchors and lag bolts, but I prefer to use sleeve anchors. You will also need a hammer drill.
. Or you can ask one of your friends if they have one. Youll also need masonry bits for a hammer drill, they are also called percussive bits in some places.
Hammer drill and the dust it creates
Hammer drills are loud, so use ear protection, and eye protection is of course an always must have.
Hanging a TV with a HDTV mount is one of those projects that falls into the if all else fails, read directions . So read the directions before trying to do this.

We cannot recommend the correct size because every home has a unique fireplace and hearth setup. So what works at your neighbors house may very well not work for your home.
Youll want to use multiple right-sized anchors 4-inches is usually good. Just remember youre attaching a heavy object to a structure that MIGHT not be as sturdy as sheetrock and 2×4 wall.
Remember, youre bolting the television to a single wall of brick, NOT the chimney.
Another thing to remember is that this project requires more than your standard drill and drill bit set. Here are a few tools youll likely need to mount a tv above a fireplace: Anchors, a hammer drill, a high-impact drill and bits, and a dry shop vacuum.
Dont let common sense mislead you when choosing your mounting anchors
When planning this project, youll likely consider the weight of a big-screen television. It might even SEEM like a great idea to use extra-long anchors to make sure your fireplace tv is mounted in the brick or wall solid enough that it wont shift or fall out. However, that common sense is misleading in this case. Allow us to explain:
