Choose A Replacement Remote For Apple TV

The range of alternative remotes for your Apple TV is not enormous, but it’s big enough, and it ranges enough in price, to make you think about it. Apple’s $60 is a lot when you can pick up a budget TV remote for $20.

On the other hand, you can go all the way up to $250 for a Logitech Harmony 950. There are other options along the way and what you get for each price point is the ability to control more devices.

If you just want to control your Apple TV and maybe, please, your TV set, that $60 Siri Remote suddenly doesn’t seem all that unreasonable.

Whether you buy that, an alternative, or several alternatives, there is one thing you have to do. You have to connect it to your Apple TV, and the way you do that differs depending on the type of remote.

As well as the Siri Remote, which is a special case, you can use what’s called a universal remote, or what Apple calls a network-based remote. The former typically uses infrared and so must be line-of-sight of the Apple TV box, while the latter connects to your Wi-Fi network

TV Remote Not Working Heres How To Fix It

If one of the buttons on your TV remote doesnt work, and you want to avoid the high cost of a replacement remote, fix it yourself. Most remotes have electrically conductive paint on the bottom of each rubber button. The more you use each button, the more the paint wears off. The good news: You can buy a repair kit that includes two-part conductive paint. The bad news: You have to figure out how to disassemble the remote, and every one is different. But here are some general disassembly tips.

Start by removing the screws. Theyre usually hidden in the battery compartment under labels and rubber feet. Next, take a digital photo of the remote with the screws near their holes. Be sure you get a clear shot of all the buttons and any slide switches along the side of the remote. Once you pop open the remote, those slide switches may fly out.

To separate the halves, press a butter knife along the seam and look for give. Press in at those points and pry the halves apart. Inside youll find either individual rubber buttons, or a single molded sheet containing all the buttons. If youve spilled anything sticky on your remote, dunk the rubber buttons/sheet, plastic case and any hard plastic buttons in a bowl of warm water and dishwashing liquid. Brush off the debris, rinse all the parts with warm water and let them dry.

How To Replace Your Apple TV Remote

You’ve broken, lost, or don’t like the Siri Remote that came with your Apple TV, and Apple is in the process of killing the iOS app. Here’s what you can do to replace it, or even give everyone their own remote.

Stop throwing that Apple TV remote to whoever wants it next. You may not be a fan, but that just makes it even harder to pay out sixty bucks for a replacement if you break it.

Everyone does get on that Siri Remote’s back, but it’s not quite up there with the hockey puck mouse in terms of poor Apple design. Apart from how you always pick it up the wrong way around, the problem is just that it’s so small you keep losing it.

Fortunately, there are alternatives. They range from straight-out replacing it with a more regular kind of chunky TV remote, to using Apple’s software versions.

If you do get an alternative remote, or a replacement Siri one, you then have to connect it to your Apple TV. Depending on the remote, you may have to go through a sequence of training it to work with your Apple TV too.

None of which is exactly a pain, but it was a lot easier when you could just download the official Apple TV Remote app to your iPhone. That was never exactly Apple’s top-priority app, going through 13 updates in 4 years, with 10 of those to do with bug fixes and stability improvements.

Still, now that it’s gone, we can miss it. The Apple TV Remote app did have an advantage over its replacement, the Remote section of Control Center on iOS.

Find Your TV’s Model Number

Before you can fully understand your Samsung TV’s model number, you need to find out what the number is!

On older TVs, you can find it by looking at the back of the TV. However, on newer models, you’ll need to look it up in the TV’s settings menu. To do this, use your TV’s remote to navigate to Settings, and then select Support. Select About this TV the model number or code will be displayed on this page.

Once you’ve got the model number, you can find out more about your TV. Look up the specifications on the Samsung Support page or download your TV’s user manual.

Connect A Usb Keyboard To Your Vizio TV

The first thing you need to do is factory reset your Vizio TV. Since you dont have a remote, youll have to use the buttons directly on your TV.

Depending on what model you have, these buttons will either be on the right or left side, or directly underneath your TV screen.

Start with your TV powered on and then press and hold both the VOLUME DOWN button and the INPUT button at the same time for about 5 seconds.

Eventually a prompt will appear on the screen instructing you to press the INPUT button for 10 seconds.

After the 10 seconds are up your TV should begin resetting.

Now that your Vizio TV is reset, go ahead and plug in your USB keyboard into the back of your TV. The keyboard can be wired, or wireless, both will work.

Use the keyboard to complete the setup! When you get to the network setup screen, type in your WiFi network name and password and you should be good to go.

Use Your Phone To Control The TV

The fastest way to control your TV without worrying about waiting for a replacement remote is to get out your phone. If you’ve set this up and given permission before, or you still have your remote, it’s a breeze.

If you’ve lost your remote, your TV will ask permission for your phone to connect. You can then use the controls on your TV to give permission.

Here’s some of the ways you can use your phone as a remote:

• The Samsung SmartThings app lets you control your TV no matter where you are. Connect your phone to your TV, and then navigate to the SmartThings app. Select your TV from the list of available devices. From there, you can use the remote control features.

• There are many third-party remote control apps available from the Google Play and iTunes stores. Peel and SURE are are two very popular options, and they’re both available on Android and iOS.
