Major League Baseball Lifts One Barrier To Watching Your Favorite Team From Anywhere

Baseball fans should have a much easier time watching in-market games next year, provided they have a cable TV subscription.

Thanks to a deal between Major League Baseball and Fox, 15 regional sports channels will begin streaming in-market games through the Fox Sports Go app and Fox Sports website. As Phillip Swann at TVPredictions points out, the Toronto Blue Jays already had a streaming deal in place, bringing the total number of baseball teams streaming in-market games up to 16.

Unfortunately, the news isnt so great for cord cutters looking to watch live games through a standalone MLB.TV subscription. That service remains limited to out-of-market games for live coverage, with the ability to watch in-market games on replay. MLBs deal with Fox reinforces the idea that if you want to watch your home team play, youll need a pay TV subscription.

Also, the deal only applies to teams whose games air on Foxs regional sports networks. Other channels such as Comcast SportsNet, Root Sports, and NESN still dont have a way to stream their in-market games.

Why this matters: While Major League Baseball has been ahead of the curve when it comes to streaming live games, watching in-market games has always been the sticking point. Even though the deal between Fox and MLB isnt any help to subscribers, its still a big step toward letting people watch wherever they happen to be.

Go Back To Your Local Cable Provider

The simplest answer to this problem may be the most painful for cord cutters.

If your local cable provider offers the regional sports network that you need to watch your favorite baseball team, the easiest remedy could be to sign back up for cable and watch the games.

You may find prices to be more competitive now. With services like YouTube TV and Hulu + Live TV upping subscription rates recently, your cable company may have a package that costs about the same.

And if youve been gone long enough, you may qualify for a new promotional price on your cable bill.

What Is The Purpose Of A Live Blackout

How to watch Major League Baseball online

The website posts a list of games subject to blackout. The list shows the games affected in advance so that you can use it to plan accordingly for the games you want to watch.

You might be wondering: Why exactly are certain MLB games placed under a blackout?

The main reason games are blacked out is due to local broadcasting rights.

Before starting the season, MLB teams agree on which broadcasting companies get to show which games. Local broadcasters usually get the rights to broadcast their local MLB teams games.

Local broadcasters get exclusive rights to broadcast those games, so they are not available to stream on

To enforce the blackout online, uses geo-locations to determine whether the stream to a certain game should be blocked or made available to view for each specific viewer trying to access the streaming content.

Websites like do this by using the IP address of your device. Each device that connects to the internet is given an IP address that identifies your physical location.

If your IP address shows you are inside the blackout region, you get blocked and will likely see one of the messages below:

Were sorry. We have determined that you are located inside one of the applicable Clubs home television territories and are therefore blacked out of watching the game you selected. Live Audio of this game is available as part of your MLB.TV subscription.

Rsn Availability By Team And Streaming Service

Some key takeaways:

  • The RSNs above are typically only available to local subscribers. Refer to the individual service’s details below to find out if you live in a place where you can receive a particular RSN.
  • None of the services carry the RSN for the Toronto Blue Jays.
  • DirecTV Stream’s $85-a-month Choice package includes 28 of the 30 RSNs for baseball — all but the Phillies and aforementioned Blue Jays.
  • It’s slim pickings for the other four services. FuboTV offers 10 RSNs for baseball, while Hulu Plus Live TV and YouTube TV offer only five. Sling TV doesn’t offer a single RSN.
  • YouTube TV is the only service that carries MLB Network in its base package. The others either charge more or don’t carry it at all.

One other note: Fox Sports RSNs have been rebranded as Bally Sports, because the channels are no longer owned by Fox but Sinclair, which has since partnered with casino group Bally’s to rename them. So, Fox Sports Ohio is now called Bally Sports Ohio and so on.

If you are looking to watch your local team night in and night out, DirecTV Stream is your best bet. It offers by far the most RSNs of the live TV streaming services. Philadelphia and Toronto are the only MLB cities whose RSN is not offered on DirecTV Stream. FuboTV is second with 10 RSNs, giving you only a one-in-three chance of getting your local RSN to watch baseball.

Using A Vpn To Watch Mlb And Still Getting Blacked Out

While you should be able to access MLB via a VPN without issues, theres always the chance that there may be an odd curveball that may cause problems. These are very easily fixed and shouldnt take more than a few minutes to sort. The most common solution to any problem is to clear your cache.

If this doesnt work, it could be that you are using a low-end VPN. Make sure you are connected to a reputable VPN.

The other problem that you may encounter is MLBs blackout policy. If, for example, you want to watch the Chicago Cubs and have connected to a server in Chicago, you wont be able to access the match. You need to ensure that you connect to a server in an area that is broadcasting the game.

In case you just can’t seem to be able to watch MLB with a VPN, hit the comment section and write to us – we will do our best to help you stream your favorite sports event.
