If you’re still laboring under the idea that it’s Sony or nothing, it might be time to update your notions. It’s true that in the 1990s, Japanese brands like Sony, Panasonic, and Toshiba were dominant in the TV marketplace around the worldbut even if Sony does still make some of the very best TVs, there’s been a lot of change since then.

Nowadays, Samsung and LG are two of the most popular TV brands in the world, while old mainstays Panasonic and Toshiba have all but exited the US market. Chinas TCL and Hisense are gaining footing every year, and California-based Vizio has become one of the most competitive in terms of picture quality for your dollars. Sony has maintained its premium TV status, of course, but it has a lot more competition these days. Below weve laid out what you can expect from each of these top TV brands in a number of categories, to help you pick a brand and model thats right for you.

Smart TVs And Smart Apps

Upgrading to a smart TV can add more to the overall price, but it offers much more in terms of entertainment choices. Having such services built into the set is more convenient than attaching a separate streaming media box, such as a Roku or Apple TV. It also saves an HDMI port that you can instead use for a game console or Blu-ray player. Moreover, today’s HDTVs are essentially flat-screen computers, so having a built-in internet connection means that the set’s software can be upgraded or patched when necessary. For example, when you need to add new services or solve a picture-quality issue. Nearly all smart TVs have Wi-Fi, but be sure to check the features list. Also, look for smart TVs that have these features:

  • Built-in apps: Check to see what apps are included. Is your favorite one missing? Some TVs enable you to add apps, but others may not have that feature.
  • Stream other places: Other features on smart TVs include the ability to visit social websites, use your TV as a digital photo album or play casual games like Angry Birds.
  • Remote control options: Some remote controls that come with TVs make navigating to streaming apps easy. If you are not happy with the remote provided, some TVs allow you to use your smartphone as a remote.

The Best TVs You Can Buy In June 2022

The Samsung QN90A Neo QLED TV combines Samsung’s highly refined quantum dot technology with the tight control of mini-LED backlighting, resulting in one of the best TV displays we’ve ever tested. To take brightness as an example, the QN90A achieved 1813.83 nits in our testing more than four times the LG G1’s 412.05 nits. Color reproduction, meanwhile, was 99.51% on a par with other excellent non-OLED sets, though below what you get on the best OLEDs. Samsung pairs that image quality with a bounty of smart TV functions and genuinely intelligent features, like a solar-powered remote control that eliminates the need to swap out batteries delivering eco-friendly design and unbeaten convenience at the same time.

The whole thing is packed into a gorgeous 1-inch-thick design that contains a huge array of smart features, potent Dolby Atmos sound and some of the best performance we’ve ever seen. HDMI 2.1 connectivity comes as standard, and it’s also a great option for gamers thanks to plenty of dedicated features and an impressive 12.6-millisecond lag time in our testing. One slight negative is that it only supports HD10+ and not Dolby Vision as well, which means it’s not quite as versatile as some sets, but overall it’s the best TV we’ve seen in the past 12 months. We look forward to reviewing Samsung’s 2022 sets very soon.

What Is The Best Smart TV System For Streaming

At CNET our favorite is Roku for its simplicity, but different systems like Google TV, Amazon Fire TV, Samsung and LG have different strengths, in particular for voice commands. In any case, we don’t consider the built-in smart TV system that important because you can always connect a streaming device to any TV.

Sony: Premium Quality At Premium Prices

The 7 Best TV Brands of 2021

In the TV world, Sony is the equivalent of old money they’ve been making high-end TVs since the late 60s, and that experience shows in the highly polished Bravia TVs they sell, and the excellent performance those TVs provide.

Sony also delivers some of the best sound you’ll get on any TV, thanks to technologies like Acoustic Surface Audio+, which uses the glass of an OLED TV panel to create dialogue and sound effects, making for incredible realism.

Sony TVs use Android TV and Google TV software to meet all of your smart TV needs. The Google app ecosystem is enormous, and the Android platform offers deeper smart home integration and better voice interaction than any other Smart TV software.

Pretty much the only problem we have with Sony’s superb TVs is the price, which consistently runs more premium than the competition.

Best TV 202: The List

Best TV for the money ð¸ (4 Brands Reviewed)

After dropping a few spots in 2021, the LG C2 OLED reclaims the top spot on our list of the best TVs in 2022. That’s due to a number of improvements LG has made to this year’s model compared to the LG C1 OLED.

Improvements for 2022 include the new Alpha a9 Gen 5 processor, which is designed to offer better object enhancement and dynamic tone mapping than its predecessor. As well as that, youâre getting âvirtual surround soundâ, with the TV upscaling stereo content into 7.1.2-channel sound. While we werenât convinced by the claims of virtual surround sound, the audio performance is good for a flatscreen TV, and a number of different sound modes means you should be able to find an audio profile that suits your needs.

In addition to those improvements, the C2 OLED carries forward the four separate HDMI 2.1 ports that it inherited from the C1 OLED, meaning it’s the perfect companion for the PS5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.

The LG C2 isnât flawless, however. Off-axis color saturation does diminish a bit when you move to the left or right of the screen when compared to the new QD-OLED models and LG doesn’t support either the IMAX Enhanced or HDR10+ format.

There are, of course, higher resolution flatscreen TVs out there right now like the Samsung QN900B, which offers 8K resolution, and the new upgraded LG G2 OLED that has a slightly higher peak brightness, but for the price, this is the absolute best TV you’re able to buy in 2022.

Which TV Smart Features And Streaming Apps Do You Need

As with 4K, it’s now hard to buy a TV that doesn’t have a smart platform packed with streaming apps. Almost every TV will have Netflix and Amazon Prime Video on board, and Disney+ is fast approaching a similar level of ubiquity. Apple TV is becoming increasingly common, too.

You’d have thought that BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, All 4 and My5 would be present on every TV available in the UK, but there always seems to be one brand that’s lacking so do check before you buy if any of those are important to you.

Other apps that are less common but potentially worth looking out for include BT Sport, Now, Britbox, and music apps such as Spotify and Tidal.
