The TV world is full of acronyms and standards. Here are the important ones:
HD: You know. A 720p or 1080p video.
4K: The next bump up in resolution. Its four times the number of pixels as HD. But if you want to get all technical, its generally 2160p.
HDR: High Dynamic Range. HDR TVs can display a much wider range of brightness than before, just like HDR photos on your phone can capture a much wider range of brightness. You want this in your next TV.
SDR: Standard Dynamic Range. What weve got right now.
HDR10: There are two competing HDR standards. Every HDR TV supports HDR10, which is free to use, and some companies, like Samsung, only support HDR10 on their TVs. HDR10 sends static metadata information about the average and peak brightness of a given video to your TV.
Dolby Vision: This is Dolbys proprietary HDR system that costs money to license. Its supported by Apple, LG, Vizio, TCL, and some Sony TVs. Most people think Dolby Vision looks way better than HDR10. It sends brightness metadata dynamically as the video plays, and supports brighter and more colorful video.
Dolby Atmos: Atmos and its competitor DTS:X are the next generation of surround sound formats, which the industry calls object-based surround. Unlike traditional surround, which sends specific tracks of audio to specific speakers, Atmos allows audio engineers to place sound objects in 3D space, and your receiver or soundbar figures out how to re-create it.

With its galactic empires and armies of clones, Foundation has obvious parallels with Star Wars, but the books predate the famous film franchise by several decades. In fact, George Lucas could have very well been inspired by Asimov.

And if none of those options appeal to you, find a friend who subscribes and get their login information, or arrange to share an account — with six simultaneous streams available, you shouldn’t have a problem.
I’d recommend the free trial to see if any of Apple’s originals strike your interest. If they do, $5 a month really isn’t much to pay for high-quality content — especially after we’ve all been streaming more than ever this year due to the pandemic and you may want some fresh, new shows outside of Netflix and Hulu.

The Future Of Apple TV
Theres a lot of rumored Apple TV functionality that were still waiting to see. Cross-app search will be coming, and it will be interesting to see if it pulls content quickly and easily from the libraries of iTunes, Netflix, Showtime and HBO. Apples own TV service, which supposedly will offer a cable TV-like package of channels over the Internet, is also on the horizon. And then theres HomeKit, which promises to make the Apple TV the center of home automation, if Apple enables it.

Apple’s service found a breakout hit in Ted Lasso, but without a back catalog it feels more like a luxury than Hulu or Netflix.
Over a year after the launch of Apple TV Plus, the tech giant’s entry into the streaming wars remains a bit of an anomaly. At $5 a month, Apple TV Plus is the lowest-priced premium, ad-free streaming service around, but still packs high-end features like 4K resolution, HDR and mobile downloads. After a slow start it now has more than 50 exclusive, big-budget shows and movies with stars like Jennifer Aniston, Oprah Winfrey and Tom Hanks. That number is tiny compared to Netflix, Amazon Prime or HBO Max, however, in part because Apple TV Plus has almost no back catalog of shows and movies to scroll through.

Apple TV Review: The Good The Bad And The Ugly
The new Apple TV looks like the old one, but its a complete overhaul of the little black puck. It now comes with a full-blown App Store, a touch-sensitive remote and voice controls via Siri.

We got our hands on a developer model and have been playing around with it. We like it a lot. Setup is fun, the interface looks stunning, and the touch remote works beautifully. If the Music app is any indication, apps on this thing are going to be great. Theres just one little thing wrong. And its not little, actually. Its big.
Heres the good, the bad and the ugly about the 4th-generation Apple TV.
Apple gave some developers early access to the new Apple TV so they could get their software ready for the new tvOS App Store. Unfortunately, theres no App Store yet, but we gave the built-in apps a good tire-kicking.
We watched movies and TV shows from the online iTunes store, loaded Photos from our photo stream and explored the fantastic Music app, which is sweeeeeet. We watched, mesmerized, as the fantastic aerial screensavers played time after time. And we did a lot of talking to Siri, which youll hear about in a bit.
All in all, we got a pretty good picture of how the new Apple TV works.
