The Final Word On New TVs
Theres never been a better time to buy a new TV. Manufacturers are constantly trying to outdo each other by including and even developing advanced technologies to make the viewing experience second to none. As a consequence, those wishing to be at the forefront of technology may have to be prepared to pay a premium, with TVs often costing $5,000 or more. In this case, it can be worth looking at brands with reputable warranty periods and servicing to ensure your prized possession is well taken care of should anything go awry. In any case, you can essentially expect to get what you pay for, and the bigger brands have a good reputation for a good reason.
What Does 4k Actually Mean
The term “4K” refers to the screen’s resolution: Televisions that support 4K will have a horizontal resolution of 4,096 pixels. Most retailers use the terms “4K” and “UHD” interchangeably, but UHD TVs are technically a little different ;they generally have a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160.
The difference comes down to the terms’ separate origins. “4K” originated with the Digital Cinema Initiatives, which establishes content and spec requirements for major film studios, and was intended to describe films that would be screened in a theater. “UHD” originated as a term for consumer TVs.
If you just want to buy a good TV, however, you’ll be fine with anything labeled “4K,” “UHD,” or “4K UHD.” Yes, “4K UHD” is technically an impossibility, but we imagine you’ll be too busy watching movies to get caught up in semantics.

Best Overall: Hisense H9g TV
After testing it for ourselves, Hisenses H9G is the best Android TV for most people.
It comes in 55-inch and 65-inch sizes, and has a resolution of 4K. The TV looks sleek thanks to its thin bezel and minimalist stand, but its whats on the inside that counts.
The H9G supports Dolby Vision HDR and can reproduce colors really accurately. Thanks to HDR, its possible to see even greater contrasts between bright colors . Video games also benefit from this technology, and Ive been pleasantly surprised at how older titles look when I return to them.
While LED TVs dont have quite as much control over screen brightness as an OLED, the H9G uses a technology called local dimming zones to bridge the gap. Basically, this allows the TV to control the brightness in certain chunks at the screen, so you see more realistic shadows, and more contrast between bright and dark parts of a scene .
While the built-in speakers support Dolby Atmos Id still recommend getting a soundbar. Its not that the speakers are bad, but quality is sacrificed by making the speakers small enough to fit in the H9Gs slim frame. Making a smart TV is a balance, and on the whole I prefer Hisenses decision to focus on its screen.
The bottom line is this: If you want an Android TV thats packed with features and provides a great value, this is the one to get.

Sony: A TV Brand With Serious Audio
Sony makes some truly breathtaking TVs, with sets like the A9G OLED delivering incredible picture quality with stunning design to match.
Possibly to be expected from a brand so involved with music through, you know, Sony Music these sets really deliver on audio technology. High-end sets feature Sonys proprietary Acoustic Surface Audio+, which uses strategically placed drivers to emit sound from the TV panel itself, rather than through downward, rear, or upward-firing speakers.
The direction of the audio is tricky when the visuals need to be front and centre, and while other TV brands have figured out some workarounds such as the TV stand on the LG C9 OLED, which funnels downward-firing audio towards the viewer Sony definitely has a unique solution.
2020 saw a new A8 OLED offer breathtaking pictures, with Sony’s characteristic smooth motion and without the oddly tilted screen design that plagued some of its earlier high-end sets.

How We Calculate The Best And Worst Brands
Which? has a wealth of information on Britain’s favourite TV brands. Every year we ask Which? members to tell us about the technology products they own from how likely they’d be to recommend a brand, to how long the product lasted once they get them home. This year more than 10,000 Which? members told us about nearly 100,000 devices. We calculate a brand’s lifespan and its customer score based on the results of our annual survey.
Our brand surveys, combined with our extensive lab tests, mean we can recommend the best TV you should buy.
This data is crucial for our testing, too. If a brand falls far below the category average, we take away the manufacturers Best Buy awards and wont recommend any of its products unless there’s a marked improvement in longevity.

What Types Of TV Are There
There are a lot of different screen types out there, all working in different ways to produce the same results. Each technology has its own unique strengths and weaknesses so here are some basics to consider:
LED TV: Direct LEDThese displays are backlit by an array of LEDs directly behind the screen. This enables localised dimming meaning immediately adjacent areas of brightness and darkness can be displayed more effectively and greatly improves contrast. LED TVs are also more power efficient and capable of a wider colour gamut than CCFL sets. Because of the extreme cost of mounting these arrays of LEDs, cheaper TVs usually use Edge-Lit LED screens over Direct or Full-Array LED screens.
LED TV: Edge LEDWith these TVs, LEDs of the backlight are mounted along the edges of the panel. This arrangement enables radically slender displays and offers superior contrast levels to CCFL, but can’t achieve the same picture quality as directly lit LED sets. However, they do come in far cheaper which is why most LED TVs out there now use this technology.
OLEDTVThe backlighting on OLED sets is achieved by passing an electric current through an emissive, electroluminescent film. This technique produces far better colours and higher contrast and also enables screens to be extremely thin and flexible. This is the holy grail display technology and LG, Sony, Philips and Panasonic have all adopted it in their flagship sets.

What You Should Know About TVs
Everyone’s vision functions the same way: we prioritize dynamic information and bright, compelling colors over subtler hues and resolution .
Generally, a TV can be considered a good TV when we forget that we’re watching a TV. We don’t see pixels creating mixes of red, green, and blue to simulate colors; we see the real world, lit and colored as it is, in fluid motion.
In simpler terms, this means a TV that can get very bright and dark without obscuring details; produces accurate colors ; possesses proper bit-mapping and the right codecs and decoders for video processing; and can properly play the various types of content thrown at it without judder, blurring, and so on.
Note that specs alone aren’t automatic indicators of quality, much like intense speed is not automatically an indicator of a good car.

Polaroid / Sceptre: Supermarket TV Brands
Depending on where you shop, youre likely to see some different logos on your television. Polaroid and Sceptre are two TV brands youll find on sale in supermarkets such as Walmart or Asda, offering television displays at a truly minimal price.;
You wont get the picture performance of most brands on this list you get what you paid for but their low price and ability to be put in a shopping cart along with your groceries naturally translate to strong sales. Be wary of any of these sets that promise high-end features like Dolby Vision HDR, though, as the processing is often not advanced enough to really deploy them as intended. For cheap and low-resolution small TVs, however, its definitely an option with some Ultra HD models like the Polaroid 4K TV being surprisingly capable for the price.
Do You Need A Separate Sound System
If you’re not planning on connecting to a separate soundbar or surround sound system, You might want to think more carefully about your set’s audio performance. Look for a screen that can go as loud as you’ll need without distortion or cabinet rattle. Consider how dialogue sounds and how much low-end rumble the bass is capable of.
Conversely, it’s pointless paying out more cash for exceptional built-in speakers if you already have a decent home theater system.
