Some refurbish and sell them for cash if theyre still usable or recycle totaled gadgets for the value of their parts. Your old cellphones and computers contain a significant amount of valuable metal, plastic, glass, copper, and silver they can recover and reuse. The proceeds fund their programs.

Other charities donate refurbished electronics directly to those in need. So if thats something that matters to you, research the charitys methods before donating.

If you plan to take the tax deduction for your donation, ensure you get a receipt from the charity, and keep it for your tax records in case of a tax audit.

Regardless of your motivations for donating or what type of charity you want to donate to, your donation can do the most good if you give it to organizations that can make the most of that device.

    Crts Contribute To Outstanding Waste

According to some estimates, there are around 5 billion pounds worth of CRT e-waste left in thousands of households all over the United States. That is a staggering amount, but when you realize that many of these date back from the 70s to the early 2000s, then youll understand how there could be so many of them tucked away in basements.

Which means that in the long term, tube TV recycling and disposal should still be the top priority for everyone.

Newer TVs Can Be Donated Too

With the ongoing evolution of newer and bigger televisions, you may find that you need to get rid of an “old” flat screen unit. These monsters offer their own hazard for disposal. That’s because one of the problems with getting rid of that old “newer” television is the sheer bulk and size of the units. Just removing it and transporting it can be hazardous. Plus you have to get it into a vehicle!

Flat screen TVs don’t contain all of the toxic substances of CRTs, but they still have some toxins, primarily mercury. The fact is that, even if you have a flat screen set, you should donate old TV sets no matter what type or size.

And, if your old flat screen set doesn’t work any more, recycling is still the best option for getting rid of it. The most efficient and convenient way to take care of your old TV disposal needs is to call a reputable junk hauling firm like Junk King. And this can include old computer monitors, old CRT televisions, and large, flat screen units.

    Crts Contain Hazardous Materials

Depending on the age of the TV, there will be varying amounts of lead, cadmium, phosphorus, mercury, and beryllium contained in them. Youll find all of these on the periodic table, and if you paid enough attention in high school, youll remember that they are all toxic to human, animal, and plant life.

However, when these CRTs are properly dismantled and recycled, then some of those materials can be reused in new products or other appliances.

As a result, less invasive and environmentally harmful mining will need to take place.

Why Its Hard To Recycle Crt Televisions

How to Recycle Your Old TV

CRT glass in Fireclay Tile’s factory

The biggest problem with disposal of CRTs is the glass tube that they contain. This tube contains a lot of lead, and the demand for such glass has basically gone to zero.Modern flatscreen technology doesnt require any such glass, and there are no other large-scale uses for it, so it has essentially become obsolete.

Unfortunately, tube TV disposal methods and technology dont exist at this time to safely extract the lead from the glass, although laboratory testing is underway.

A typical CRT has between 4 and 8 pounds of lead, almost all of which is in the funnel. The leaded glass needs to be processed, stored and transported without causing environmental contamination.

    Megan Quinn, Eco Writer

Some minor demand has come from innovative companies that make new products out of them, like Fireclay Tile. However, its unlikely to put much of a dent in the huge supply of this glass. For a lot of recycling and disposal companies, CRT disposal means storing as much of this glass as possible.

TVs are made from plastic, glass, and electrical components that can cause damage to the environment if left alone in a landfill. Due to the potential damage TVs can cause, your regular trash pick up will not offer TV disposal.

    Old Devices Contain Precious Metals

The recycler can melt down and reuse the metals for new devices. Throwing away electronics is like throwing away a valuable piece of jewelry.

Yes You Can Donate Old TV Sets

You got your first beautiful, new, big screen TV last year at Christmas. Congratulations! But what about your old TV?

If you still have your old television tucked in a back bedroom or out in the garage, you’re not alone. It’s been estimated that there have been 704.9 million cathode ray tube televisions sold just in the U.S. since 1980, according to the EPA.

And, it’s also estimated that there have been over 20 million of these TV sets being disposed of every year – and that number gets larger each year, as well.

All the more reason why it’s definitely better to donate old TV sets than to try to toss them in the trash. But many people may wonder how hard that might be since their old TVs are, well… old?

The following suggestions were offered in a post at PocketsSense:

There are often more unique places for your old TV donation. Lee Neikirk, editor at Reviewed, had these suggestions:

If you’ve got old TVs sitting around that still work, consider donating them instead. Try calling up your local Goodwill, Salvation Army, or even a school or public library, and see if they’re in need of a TV. We’ve donated 65-inch 4K HDR TVs to the Goodwill around the corner, so I know it can be done. Try just Googling “donate electronics.”You might also consider calling your local hobby shop or video game storesome older games are still played exclusively on CRTs, and the gamers are always looking for working sets.

    Drop Off At Thrift Stores

Many nonprofits sell donated televisions at their thrift stores. As a rule of thumb, thrift stores want televisions to be cable-ready and have inputs for DVD players, VCRs or other electronic accessories. Certain nonprofits take flat-screen televisions. However, large televisions, consoles, black-and-white televisions and non-cable-ready devices may not be accepted at many thrift stores console and large units may prove unsafe for employees to handle while black-and-white and non-cable-ready ones are obsolete. Some thrift stores will also allow you to make a computer donation or donate a printer, so you may be able to get rid of all of your unwanted electronics at once.

These materials include metals, plastics, and glass. By donating your electronics, you may help reduce pollution and greenhouse gas emissions when manufacturing new materials. A Boost For A Furniture Bank

Some cities have a charity-based furniture bank that collects donated household goods and redistributes them for free to those in need, such as donations to former homeless folks in a new home or to those with extremely low incomes. In many cases, the furniture bank will pick up the TV at your home if you make an arrangement by phone or online. Call your local furniture bank or check its website first to ensure they accept electronics.

What To Do With An Unwanted Old TV

Unfortunately, there may be a situation where your old TV is either too big or too old . So, what do you do with those dinosaurs?

Well, you won’t be taking them to the county or city dump! At least not in half the states in the U.S. anyway.

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures website:

    • 25 states and the District of Columbia have enacted legislation establishing a statewide electronic waste, or e-waste, recycling program.
    • Legislation typically follows two basic models for e-waste disposal. Under the extended producer responsibility model, used in 24 states, the manufacturer takes responsibility by paying to collect and recycle the products covered under law, with the products covered varying widely from state to state.
    • Under the second type of program, known as the advanced recycling fee model, consumers pay retailers a $6 to $10 fee at the time of purchase which is deposited into a statewide recycling fund. California adopted this method in 2003and was the first state to establish an e-waste recycling program.

These means that at least half the states only allow for legally sanctioned disposal methods for old TVs and other electronic waste items, known as e-waste.

Her’s what that looks like on a map:

Of course, if you don’t live in California or one the other 24 states you might be able to take your old TV set to your local landfill or county dump. But it’s probably not a great idea environmentally speaking.
