Apple TV+ Pricing And Availability

Is Apple TV+ Worth It? [1 Year Later]

How much does Apple TV+ cost? At the time of launch, the price is $4.99 per month. There is no contract required, so you are free to cancel at any time.

The service is available nationwide in the United States, and many other countries. Since Apple owns all the content on the platform, we expect the service to roll out to most markets that Apple operates in.

For a limited time, Apple is also running a promo for people who buy new Apple products. If you purchase a new Apple product on or after September 10, 2019, you can get a free year of Apple TV+. While a year of the service only costs $60 , its nonetheless a great deal for people who planned to buy Apple products anyway.

Apple TV Plus Content Library

But what of the actual shows themselves? Reviews have come in for a number of the more prominent titles already on the service, which you can read in our Apple TV Plus reviews roundup here.

Notable titles include The Morning Show, Jason Momoa epic See, Sesame Street spin-off Helpsters, teen fantasy Ghostwriters, Hailee Steinfelds Emily Dickinson biopic, and NASA drama For All Mankind. Theres enough to flick through in a few evenings, but if only one of these shows takes your fancy, theres not much else keeping your subscribed past the seven-day free trial.

Suffice to say that its a small launch offering, with Apple having focused in on a few titles rather than seek to get breadth of content while compromising on quality across the board. And while nothing here seems like a desperate failure, there isnt really anything to make the Apple TV Plus subscription a necessity, in the way that Stranger Things and Bojack Horseman do for Netflix, Good Omens and The Boys do on , or The Handmaids Tale does on Hulu.

With Disney Plus launch only a fortnight later than Apple TV Plus, comparisons of their respective libraries are inevitable, too. But with the formers portfolio featuring classic Disney movies, Pixar, Star Wars, and Marvel its hard to give Apples offering the same enthusiasm.

What Is In The Free Trial

Apple One is available for a one-month free trial, including any service you have not already subscribed to. Unlike other software, there are no restrictions on the features and no ad interruptions. The free trial allows you to experience everything before buying.

We suggest you use the free trial to experience all the services, allowing you to decide which services you definitely want to use.

Let’s do a deep dive into the individual benefits and their alternatives below.

Some Devices Aren’t Supported

If you have a modern smart TV, games console, or streaming stick, then you are in luckthere’s likely an Apple TV+ app.

However, if you own a device from 2018 or prior, chances are Apple TV+ doesn’t support it. For example, while you can download an app for every streaming service under the sun on your 2018 Samsung smart TV, Apple TV+ won’t be one of them.

Perhaps you own an Android phone or tablet the operating system has over 70% market share. Well, there’s no Apple TV+ app. You can watch in the browser, but the experience isn’t as smooth as a dedicated app. It’s unfortunate that Apple are choosing to cut off such a large number of users.

Acquisition Of Back Catalog Film And TV Content

Apple TV+ Review: Is Apple

In mid-2020, Apple began discussions with film and television studios to license their previously released content as part of an effort to build a back catalog of non-original films and television shows for the streaming service. The shift was designed to help the service better compete against the large content libraries offered by competitors like Netflix. This represented a pivot for Apple, which had initially attempted to build the service entirely on original content, avoiding licensing fees to help keep monthly subscription fees low, and relying on its Apple TV Channels content partners to supply other content users wanted.

Analysts believed that the addition of older, highly re-watchable content like popular sitcoms and well liked films would help to retain the slowly growing subscriber base, while Apple continues to develop original content. The shift was also an acknowledgement of poor growth, especially relative to competing services.

The back catalog development was also seen as a move by Apple to attempt to persuade free trial users to transition into paid users as the first wave of one-year trials was scheduled to expire in November 2020.

So What Is The Apple TV App

The Apple TV app has a collection of channels and shows and movies that are free or available for purchase/rent. It’s the Apple logo with the word “TV” next to it. It comes installed on Apple devices and it’s compatible with other streaming devices like Roku or Amazon Fire Stick. So if you don’t have Apple TV, you can still download the Apple TV app and watch shows.

2. Servant

Many people missed the phase where M. Night Shyamalan started to be involved in good horror projects again, and Servant is no exception. Season one of this show was one of the more deeply unsettling things Ive witnessed across all the horror series on all the streaming services I own, and while I think season 2 is a bit less scary, I remain enraptured all the same. Some stellar performances here and a great use of minimal gore, high tension horror.

Defending Jacob

Apple

3. Defending Jacob

Im a sucker for murder mystery crime shows, usually of the British variety, and yet this is an American one that rivals any of them. A fantastic, unexpected performance from Chris Evans here, and the tale is one of the more twisted I can remember seeing with a finale that is going to stay with me for a while. One of the best shows in this genre in quite some time.

The Morning Show

Apple

4. The Morning Show

I was skeptical of The Morning Show, given that it seemed like the idea was simply to throw a bunch of A-listers at the screen and see what stuck, but this was the show I watched with my wife and we both enjoyed it immensely. In a time in their careers when all these actors could be coasting, Jen Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Steve Carell and Billy Crudup are really going at 110% here, and its the best work Ive seen from any of them in years.

What Apple TV Plus Shows And Movies Are There

Apple TV Plus is heavily reliant on Apple Originals, which is a mixed bag of comedy and drama series, feature films, documentaries, and kids’ fare. The size of Apple TV Plus’s library may pale in comparison to Netflix’s or Hulu’s but some Apple Originals have already been met with acclaim from viewers and critics.

Perhaps the most well-known Apple Original outside of the aforementioned Ted Lasso, is its flagship drama, The Morning Show, which boasts a star-studded cast of Jennifer Anniston, Reese Witherspoon, and Steve Carell. It’s garnered a number of awards and nominations, including a Primetime Emmy win for Billy Crudup .

Other standout shows on Apple TV Plus include the animated musical series Central Park from Loren Bouchard , Peabody Award-winning comedy Dickinson starring Hailee Steinfield, and the Ronald D. Moore science-fiction drama For All Mankind.

Apple Original films have been capturing attention lately with the release of Palmer starring Justin Timberlake, The Banker featuring Anthony Mackie and Samuel L. Jackson, and the Beastie Boys Story directed by Spike Jonze.

Meanwhile, the upcoming Martin Scorsese Apple Original movie Killers of the Flower Moon has added Robert De Niro, Leonardo di Caprio, and Lily Gladstone to its cast.

Final Thoughts On Apple TV+

Apple TV ! Is it worth it? âï¸?Morning Show Review

As streaming becomes an increasingly popular part of our entertainment lives, it is natural that the marketplace will flood with companies interested in profiting from the change in consumer behavior.

Apple is attempting to get away from the idea that it is simply a maker of devices with which to stream content. This launch makes it clear that the company would like to carve out its own space in the streaming market. In other words, they want to be both the device you stream on and the service youre paying to stream a double-dip into your entertainment budget, if you will.

Lets review some pros and cons to trying out the service:

Apple TV Plus Prices And Bundles

Apple TV Plus costs $4.99 per month and includes ad-free content in 4K, HDR, and Dolby Vision. You can stream Apple TV Plus on up to six devices simultaneously.

However, you can save money by purchasing an Apple One bundle, which packages Apple TV Plus with up to five more Apple services. There are three Apple One subscription tiers: Individual, Family, and Premier.

Apple One Individual includes Apple TV Plus, Apple Music, Apple Arcade, and 50GB of iCloud storage. At $14.95 per month, that’s a $6 saving versus purchasing each service separately.

Apple One Family costs $19.95 per month, an $8 total saving. It can be shared with up to five people and comes with the same services as the Individual plan, although iCloud storage is bumped to 200GB.

Apple One Premier is $29.95 per month. Up to five people can share this plan, which includes 2TB of iCloud storage and adds Apple News Plus and Apple Fitness Plus. Opting for this bundle will net you a $25 overall saving.

Apple TV+: Where We Are

Back in September, I purchased an iPhone 11 Plus Max, which entitled me to a free subscription to Apple TV+. When the service finally launched on November 1, I began sampling a lot of the first titles, including The Morning Show, For All Mankind, and Servant. I stuck around to finish the first season of every one of those series, then started new programs like Defending Jacob and Little America.

Of the Apple TV+ shows Ive watched, only Amazing Stories left me unimpressed. However, only The Morning Show grabbed me enough to make me even remotely excited about a second season. Defending Jacob was also satisfying, but its considered a limited series.

My ho-hum noncommittal attitude towards Apple TV+ up until this point probably has less to do with the service and more to do with whats been going on around me since it first launched last fall. Or as I like to say, BC, or Before Corona.

What Is Apple TV+

Apple TV+ is Apple’s latest foray into the streaming verse. The service, which launched in 2019, is a melange of original shows, movies, and animated shorts. Though it’s still new to the game, the streamer’s managed to attract over 40 million subscribers. A number that’s growing rapidly each day.

Apple TV+ might be the perfect underdog service to change the tide in the streaming wars. And for that reason, we’re bringing you everything you need to know about the service to decide if the service is right for you. Let’s start by comparing it to other streaming services.

Is Apple TV Plus Worth It

The Morning Show Makes Apple TV+ Worth It Visit Celebrity

Whether or not Apple TV Plus is worth it will depend on how much you value fresh and original content. Its not the platform for people who want to binge-watch The Office for the umpteenth time, with just a limited catalog of non-original content.

Apple TV Plus features some great original content that could be worth the subscription fee for serious TV junkies. They include The Morning Show a drama starring Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, and Steve Carell, See an epic sci-fi drama starring Jason Momoa and Alfre Woodard, M. Night Shyamalans horror series Servant, .

Compared to other big hitters in the streaming world, Apple TV Plus wont offer access to new blockbuster films or fan-favorite classics, but its the only service to focus so heavily on big-budget original content. Apple is reportedly spending billions of dollars to attract top-tier talent and has deep pockets to keep the platform running as time goes on.

Apple TV Plus also has a fairly generous family sharing plan, allowing up to six family members to use the same account. Even better, they can use their own logins, so you dont need to share your password with anybody.

Another thing to consider is that if youre already in the Apple ecosystem, you may be able to get the service for free.

What To Watch On Apple TV+

Apple TV+ is still in its infancy but has already seen breakout hits including comedy Ted Lasso and hard-hitting drama The Morning Show.

Apple aims for premium quality across its drama, comedy, and documentary TV shows and movies so everything should reach a reasonable level of quality and hopefully be worth your time. In terms of personal recommendations, I suggest starting with Defending Jacob, For All Mankind, The Morning Show, Trying, Ted Lasso and the movie The Banker.

Bad Navigation: Premium Paid Content At The Forefront

Is Apple TV Plus Worth It?

The worst thing about Apple TV+ is the placement of premium paid content. This is not helped by poor navigation.

The extra paid for stuff is mixed in with the free stuff, so youll see something interesting, only to find that it costs extra.

To me, it appears that theres such a big push for paid-for content. This can be a one-off charge for a film or series, or paying per month for an extra channel.

While Amazon Prime Video does this too, its much more clear in the way it does it though its navigation. Amazon Prime Video also has a huge back catalogue of content available in its package.

What is worse is that theres content free elsewhere, which is paid for on Apple TV+.

This includes shows such as ones available on the BBC iPlayer, ITV Player and Dave which we can already watch for free.
