Factors That Slow Down Streaming

What is Streaming?

Streaming, despite being so commonly used, is a somewhat fragile process and a number of factors can interfere with it.

As mentioned, your broadband speed is perhaps the most common issue with streaming you need enough speed to prevent stuttering and streaming failure. Likewise, you need a reliable connection, and that means Wi-Fi glitches and dead spots can cause streaming playback issues. You need to make sure your Wi-Fi is reliable, or use a wired Ethernet connection if possible.

Your device also needs to have enough processor speed and memory to stream video. This generally isn’t an issue for modern phones, tablets and computers, but an old PC can have trouble “keeping up” with HD or 4K streaming video.

And of course, streaming issues can be caused on the network’s side as well if your internet provider or the company that runs the streaming app is having issues, you’ll probably have issues too.

When trying to decide between video services, its likely youll come to a decision between services including cable television and various streaming services. Well break down the differences between them to help you find the best way to entertain you and your family.

In the below section we’ll be comparing cable providers, such as Comcast or Spectrum, to the streaming providers most similar to them. These include services like Sling, Hulu with Live TV, and YouTube TV. It won’t include standalone services that only show their own content, such as Netflix or HBO .

What Internet Speed Do You Need To Stream 4k TV

Netflix and Amazon require speeds of at least 15Mbps to stream 4K content. Speeds need to remain consistently at or above that figure as soon as you drop lets say due to high contention rates at peak usage times the picture will slip back into HD. And dont worry if you start off with a blurry image: its common for streaming services to start a programme at low resolution and then bump it up to HD and UHD after the initial buffer.

To try and cover itself for this eventuality, Netflix actually says on its website that you need 25Mbps minimum. But weve confirmed with Netflix that a consistent 15Mbps is enough. Its worth bearing in mind that this means you need 15 to 25Mbps of spare bandwidth, so if someone else is using your Wi-Fi, youll need to have that amount of bandwidth free after you account for the other persons usage.

Compression techniques improve all the time, so its possible you may in the future need slightly lower broadband speed to experience 4K on Netflix or other rival 4K streaming platforms. But bear in mind that high levels of compression can negatively affect picture quality, so if youre serious about 4K a fast broadband connection is a must.

Option : Pay For Just The Services Youre Using Right Now

The rapidly rising cost of all the streaming services you might ever want to use can make it feel as if youre facing the sky-high cable bills, only with a few extra steps. But despite all of its pain points, theres a reason à la carte TV was so appealing for so long: You can pick and choose what you want to pay for. And not just what you want, but when you pay for it.

Personally, I have a few subscriptions that I keep around no matter what. These are the ones that I come back to regularly and which have enough content to justify paying for throughout the year. For me, its just Netflix and Hulu. I splurge on the 4K and ad-free options, which makes my normal monthly bill about $28.

Of course, there are shows on other services I want to watch, too. When Game of Thrones was on, I signed up for HBO Now so I could watch it live. I briefly signed up for CBS All Access to watch the new Twilight Zone, though that didnt last as long. Most services are $10 to $15, so adding one wont blow out my budget too much.

The key, however, is to rotate your extra subscriptions. Leave one or two slots in your budget for an extra streaming service that you dont intend to stay subscribed to. Then, while you have it, watch as many of the shows you want to watch on that service as you can, before moving on to the next one. This especially works if you schedule your rotating subscriptions around the big shows or events that youre excited to see.

Businesses Work Hard To Make Streaming Fast

Means TV: First Cooperative Streaming Service

Streaming video and audio from the internet isnt new it just feels new because its finally convenient. Watching a video or playing a song from a website happened bit by bit used to be an annoying and time-consuming affair. The stream would constantly stop and start, and you could spend minutes just waiting for media to buffer .

But the way that streaming works has mostly stayed the same. Files download bit by bit as youre watching or listening to them. Its the infrastructure thats changed, and businesses like Youtube and Netflix have worked hard building that infrastructure.

Youtube and Netflix used to use only one or two servers to host their content, and it didnt work. Users that were far away from the servers experienced a lot of lag, and high-traffic days would slow streaming servers to a crawl. Companies have solved this problem by building Content Delivery Networks , to store and send content. A CDN is a dense, global network of servers that all contain the same content. This reduces lag, keeps servers in densely populated areas from becoming overloaded.

Of course, a powerful CDN is useless if all of your users have crappy internet connections. In some ways, this issue solves itself over time. ISPs are always competing for faster, more powerful internet connections, and advances like worldwide and 5G home internet connections are just over the horizon.

Music And Other Audio

Audio streaming, including both music and podcasts, has become incredibly popular. Music streaming lets you play tons of songs by different artists, all without having to download a single file.

Services like Spotify, Pandora, and Apple Music provide millions of tracks available for streaming at the touch of a button. On some, like Pandora, you can select a genre or mood, and theyll curate playlists for you. Others, like Spotify, play exactly what you select though playlists are also a major component of the platform. Apple Music offers a mix of both options.

Podcasts can be either streamed or downloaded to listen to later, and theyre available through services like iTunes and Stitcher. You can also stream audio files you own to other devices within your home.

How Does Cloudflare Accelerate Live Streaming

The uses a technique called concurrent streaming acceleration to speed up live stream delivery. Some CDNs cannot serve a video segment to more than one user until the segment is completely saved in the cache. The Cloudflare CDN, however, is able to serve these segments directly to multiple viewers at once as they are loading, cutting out precious seconds of wait time for the users. Where Next For Streaming Media

Streaming mediabringing music and videos on demandhas advanceddramatically since I wrote the first version of this article in 2007. Back then, I wrote:

The audio and video information youdownload has to be compressed dramatically so it downloads in a reasonable amount of time. Most streaming videos are still quite small and “pixelated” when they play on something likeYouTube. That’s because even today’s best broadband connections are notfast enough to download the huge amount of information in a fullscreen, high-definitionTV picture. In a few years time, when broadband connections are many times faster, it will be possible tostream HD-quality video over the Net. Then the age of information-on-demand really will have arrived!

All told, reliable, affordable, high-quality streaming of audio and video is now the norm two decades ago, when Rob Glaser was granted his original streaming-media patent, it would have seemed like a very distant dream.

Directv Stream Internet Based TV Vs Cable

Netflix Quick Guide: What Is Streaming And Why Is It Better? | Netflix

Compared to traditional cable or satellite TV, Internet based TV uses a different, improved technology which allows for more flexibility and creativity within the network. IPTV enables two-way interactivity, versus a traditional, one-way cable or satellite broadcast network. The two-way IPTV network means viewers have more options to interact, personalize and control their viewing experience. IP technology also allows for more flexibility within your home network. With IP, all of the DIRECTV STREAM receivers in your home no matter which room they are in are connected on the same high-speed home network. In addition, current DIRECTV STREAM technology lets you watch shows recorded from your Cloud DVR on any compatible device in the house or outside of it.

What Is A Streaming Device

Streaming media devices connect your TV or home theater to the internet, allowing you to stream content through a streaming TV service provider or app.

Smart TVs are essentially a television with streaming apps built in. In many cases, you wont need a separate remote or added device, since its all contained within the smart TV.

Dedicated streaming media devices, like an Apple TV or Roku, offer an impressive range of options for viewing content on your TV. And, as long as your TV has an HDMI port, you wont need to buy a whole new television. These handy devices typically come pre-loaded with dozens of the most popular streaming “channels” , and you can add more when you want to. When you turn them on, they are fully configured, making these devices a convenient option.

Many Blu-ray players and newer video game consoles also act as streaming devices, with a few limitations. If you already own one of these, its worth considering as it may save you buying an additional piece of equipment.

How Did We Get Here

It would be hard to overstate the sea change that has taken place in TV since the mid-aughts, for both creators and consumers. Its not like anybody ever thought Breaking Bad would become Breaking Bad, says Mark Johnson, who won an Oscar for Rain Man two decades before working as an executive producer of the era-defining crime drama that yielded AMCs excellent prequel Better Call Saul and a gripping Netflix film, El Camino. If somebody had said in the first season that there would be a spin-off, or Youll make a movie someday, we would have thought they were crazy. In many ways, the trajectory of Breaking Badan early beneficiary of the Netflix bump, or a spike in audience once a show hits the streamerhas mirrored that of the TV industry at large.

That story begins sometime between the launch of YouTube in 2005, and 2007, when Netflix began offering licensed streaming titles. In 2013, Netflix launched its first high-profile original series, an adaptation of the BBC political drama House of Cards, with a two-season commitment signaling that streaming could be a serious market for creators. As Netflixs CCO and, since last year, co-CEO Ted Sarandos famously said at the time, The goal is to become HBO faster than HBO can become us.

Transition From A Dvd

One of the movie streaming industry’s largest impacts was on the DVD industry, which effectively met its demise with the mass popularization of online content. The rise of media streaming caused the downfall of many DVD rental companies such as Blockbuster. In July 2015, The New York Times published an article about Netflix‘s DVD services. It stated that Netflix was continuing their DVD services with 5.3 million subscribers, which was a significant drop from the previous year. On the other hand, their streaming services had 65 million members.

Tips For Better Streaming

Deadline Detroit

You can change your resolution to 1080p on higher-quality, wired internet connections. It can also improve your stream if you get one of the faster processors for streaming such as a high-powered laptop.

If you’re looking for the best experience and willing to spend some money, don’t use wireless internet as it typically offers less quality than wired connections. Wired computers are still better than wireless laptops for streaming.

Both allow for decent streams. But just remember that a wired connection is going to be more consistent with reliability when streaming, and does not have any limited range like some Wi-Fi might.

A Note About Chunked Transfer Encoding

Web servers can be configured to send data using Chunked Transfer Encoding. When a web server is set up to deliver files this way, traditional data is not delivered that allows the browser to determine the tracks overall duration .

Hence, the timeline may not work when the “duration” is unknown.

In a nut-shell, the server does not issue “content-length” information as well as the “duration” meta that browsers require for media files. Chunked Transfer Encoding is used by some hosting companies to mimic “true” streaming over the HTTP protocol and sends small chunks of data as without traditional “header” information. In adddition, chunked transfer encoding never issues the “file done loading” signal, so Wimpy will continue to monitor the file loading progress for the duration of the track.

As a result, Wimpy will not display the timeline scrubber properly and users will not be able to “scrub” to different parts of a track. Without the “duration” there is no way for wimpy to know when the track ends so attempting to utilize the scrubber is pointless because if the scrubber were to move to the 50% point… 50% of what duration???

Check with your hosting provider to see if they can disable “chunked transfer encoding” for media files .

Content Transmission Technology: Cable Generally Reliable While Streaming Is Dependent On Internet

  • Content is sent on-demand to each device.

  • Usable on any supported Internet-connected device.

  • Dependent on Internet to receive content.

Streaming video services do exactly what the name implies. You make a request, and the provider sends you the video content then and there, using your Internet connection. This brings a number of advantages. One of these is portability, or the ability watch the service on any supported Internet device .

Another is mobility, meaning you can watch anywhere you have Internet access. This also means you can easily pause or rewind your programming, even if its being streamed live. It also means your experience is totally dependent on the quality of your Internet.

Cable is a broadcast medium, in the same way that local television systems send video over the airwaves. Now, cable uses copper wire instead of signals, and has long since upgraded from analog to digital. But the basic idea is still the same. As a result, all content is effectively live.

Now, if you get up for a snack and miss something, most modern cable boxes can mimic features like pause/rewind by recording your current program automatically. But to what extent depends on the carrier, and this will reset if you change the channel. Speaking of which, youll need a set-top box from your provider to use their service.

Use By The General Public

Advances in computer networking, combined with powerful home computers and operating system advances, made streaming media practical and affordable for the public. Stand-alone Internet radio devices emerged to offer listeners a non-technical option for listening to audio streams. These audio streaming services have become increasingly popular, as streaming music reached a record of 118.1 billion streams in 2013. In general, multimedia content has a large volume, so media storage and transmission costs are still significant. Media are generally compressed for transport and storage. Increasing consumer demand for streaming of high definition content has led the industry to develop technologies such as WirelessHD and ITU-T G.hn, which are optimized for streaming HD content. In 1996, produced the first large-scale, online, live broadcast, the Adam Yauch-led Tibetan Freedom Concert, an event that would define the format of social change broadcasts. Scarpa continued to pioneer in the streaming media world with projects such as Woodstock ’99, Townhall with President Clinton, and more recently Covered CA’s campaign “Tell a Friend Get Covered” which was live streamed on YouTube.

Why You Need A Streaming Device

Beginners Guide to Streaming: What is Streaming? (Pt. 1)

What if you have a smart TV and you can access streaming services directly from there? Why get a streaming device? Most people ask these questions because they find that streaming devices can be redundant. While that much is true, that doesnt mean it wont add value to your watching experience. Here are three reasons why a streaming device is necessary.

  • It loads content faster
  • If you own a smart TV and you tried watching Netflix, you will notice that it will load and stop more as compared to when youre using a streaming device. Why? Its because streaming devices are made specifically for streaming, meaning, their processors are fast enough to keep up with the streaming services demands and requirements.

  • It has more available streaming services
  • Not all smart TVs can stream a lot of streaming services. In fact, some just have 1-2 sites available. With a streaming device, you gain access to more services at a more affordable price. Its affordable because even if your streaming device becomes outdated, replacing it with a much newer model will still be more affordable than replacing a new smart TV. Besides, streaming services are more focused on improving their technology for streaming devices than smart TVs.
